Great episode and channel overall. I check in time to time. I owned a 5200 way back in 82. It was a fantastic system that could have done much more but that is all history. By 84 I sold mine to buy books for college. I have managed to pickup a two and four port versions in the 90s and have Wico joystics. I have a cartridge and rom collection. What would be great is if someone can list all the games in a post for us collectors, enthusiasts, hunters to compare to their collections to see what is missing or what to add. Scrolling videos especially 100game videos can be a bit time consuming. A single list would help vs. checking atari museum and other sites for an actual list of released, prototypes and home brews out there for the console.

Because of its truly innovative analog nature, the 5200 controller works fabulously for many games: Super Breakout, Missile Command, Centipede, Soccer, Defender, to name a few. But the controller was ruinous for games that required precise four directional movement, like Pac-Man. Atari needed to release a 4-direction controller, but didn’t. These days there are various adapters that allow gamers to connect “normal” controllers to the 5200. Back in the day, a couple companies offered alternative controllers for the system.

Centipede is a game where screen ratio matters. Centipede is a totally different game on the 5200 versus the 7800 because the 5200 uses a 4x3 playfield just like a TV and a 7800 uses a 3x4 play field just like a "tate monitor", and the tate monitor is what was used in the arcade

Missing from the list of 5200 exclusives is Space Dungeon. It’s worth picking up a 5200 just to play Space Dungeon-it’s that good. Dreadnaught Factor came out on the Intellivision, but it was revamped and significantly redesigned for the 5200. I did not know the Atari 5200 never released outside the US; would explain why I've never seen even a glimpse of the system physically before. The focus on many unreleased games certainly was an interesting aspect to it; both Black Belt and Xari Arena looked impressively smooth.
10:42 - It says a about the functionality of the controller when the company who made the system couldn't even get one of their own games working on it. 6:04 technically "America's Pastime" ;-). Understandable not to be a fan of baseball if you weren't born into a fandom for a certain team. The same goes for its remote cousin Cricket if the other way around. Speaking of cricket, I have never seen a cricket video game. Is there a particular video arcade, computer or console cricket game that is the best? I imagine cricket had a disadvantage in that North America and Japan are the number 1 and 2 Baseball Markets and I bet the big developers stayed clear of cricket. Which is too bad.
I may be the only North American subscriber who would click ' view' but a ' 5 obscure cricket games that were pretty amazing in Commonwealth markets' might be a fun topic some day.

I can't stand cricket either, I dislike it more than baseball and it's the most boring sport ever created in my opinion.
That said, the best cricket games are undoubtedly the Graham Gooch/Brian Lara titles. Although the licence changed they were all an evolution of the same award winning game created in the early eighties by Audiogenic and I personally know a couple of people who worked on them.

@@TheLairdsLair haha, I have never been able to grasp cricket. It also isn't easy to find on TV anyplace I have lived. Had there been a good cricket game available to me in the early 80's I may at least understand the game somewhat. Baseball translates pretty well as a fun video game when done well. I got an awesome Bandai Handheld LCD baseball when I was a kid ( a quality game competitive with Nintendo Game and Watch ). The game had 2 player simultaneous and a little joystick to control the pitches. If you ever find it cheap... Definitely add it to your collection.
Separately, that Looney Tunes Hotel looks like a great game for 1983. It reminds me slightly of Elevator Action with much more enemy variation. It is funny how if it was a 1987 game I would judge it harshly. But being a pre-crash/crash era game. It looks great.

From its unruly (and unnecessary) system size, to the horrible joystick, the 5200 was the best indicator that Atari had no forward plan to maintain their dominance in the video game industry.
The 5200 could have had the largest installed base of software of any console to date at the time, had they only made the 5200 comaptible with their 8 bit computer line (with minor tweaks to account for the missing keyboard and function keys. It would have been like the releasing the XEGS, and not allowing compatibility (the only reason to own an XEGS today is the massive library of 8-bit software available - and perhaps the tacky 80's pastel design choices).
And it should be noted that in both cases, Atari chose to repackage severely ageing tech rather than compete by developing something new.
While I am a TI-99/4A enthusiast, I also owned an 800 xl (and later a 130XE) when software became scarce for the 4A, and there is no denying that for a system designed in the late 70'S, the Atari 8 bit line was unrivalled in graphic capabilities, overall efficiency and 3rd party software support during their initial production years. But by the time the 5200 was released, the tech was getting long in the tooth, but they just kept re-packaging it for well over a decade.
No wonder Atari has devolved into a trademark licensing company. The name 'Atari' and Fuji logo was all that remained of value from their early innovations (well...and the CX-10 joystick which remains my favourite game control device).

I mean in Ataris deffence they were the 1st to have success in the mkt. and they were in the possible position of not killing the goose (atari 2600) that was making WB billions of dollars with increased competition.
It wasn't like 7800 was a choice, 7800 was made as a response to consumer feedback and failure of 5200.
Atari was a follower vs leader in the mkt at this point, if intelevision and colecovision weren't eating into the mkt Atari wouldn't of had a followup system for a few Years.
Consumers really didn't get why they needed a new Atari that didn't play the old Atari games, especially when it mainly had the same titles that the 2600 had yeah graffix were better. But spending 300 bucks and another 30 for middle command a game I'm tired of on the 2600.
