Aether, also known as luminiferous ether, is a theoretical substance in physics believed to act as the medium for the transmission of electromagnetic waves, much like air transmits sound waves.
The fifth element or quintessence, also known as aether, was believed to fill the region of the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere, according to ancient and medieval science.
The postulated medium for light propagation was luminiferous aether or ether.
Luminiferous means "light-bearing"
In order to explain the fact that light propagated through empty space (a vacuum), which waves should not have been able to do, this theory was invoked. By assuming a spatial plenum of luminiferous aether rather than a spatial vacuum, wave theories of light provided the necessary theoretical medium.
The aether hypothesis was the topic of considerable debate throughout its history, as it required the existence of an invisible and infinite material that did not interact with physical objects. As the nature of light was explored, especially in the 19th century, the physical qualities required of an aether became increasingly contradictory. Although there was no physical theory to replace the aether by the late 1800s, its existence was questioned.
