Thank you so much sir for this information. I’m definitely going to take this in consideration. I have been a business owner before and I made some Of these mistakes years ago when I was going through divorce and personal stuff and lost so many clients. After learning from mistakes and healing, I’m so ready to get back to it and re-brand

Thanks for this video! Just took the plunge to go out on my own at a salon suite! I'm literally moving into my suite this week and stressing about how to create the ambiance (during a pandemic with Covid protocols still in place) I want for my clients in 10x10 room with ugly fluorescent lighting (where I can't hang a chandelier) after coming from a really beautiful (yet toxic) salon.

Congratulations!!!! I JUST moved into mind and having similar stresses. They did paint my suite for me and hang my new chandelier so it does help in the creative process, but it’s still a nerve wracking process! I just know that your suite will come together nicely very soon. I’m rooting for you!

This was a great video and I truly appreciate your honesty. I know you probably rubbed some people the wrong way with your “weight” comment. But here is the thing..... it is ACCURATE. We are in the visual business. The end. And I say this as an Afrocentric, curvy, black woman. The business is easier if you keep it together. Mentally and physically.

Funny no reply now from "House of Salons" So let me help, here. No one should make shallow insults. (He did try to stress, with warning, he hated to say it) I will say I did loose 80 LBS, for my physical and mental health ( and for my professional image). I have more energy, sleep better and I have less leg and feet injury/fatigue.
I do know there are those who subconsciously like to go to skinny pretty stylist. But the number one comments guests express is THE EXPERIENCE 85% state this. Good service, positive energy, hospitality, a thorough consultation, listening to their needs ( not simply doing what the stylist wants), consistent pricing, consistent results and punctuality.
I've always said you attract what you reflect. I want consistent professinal punctual, positive guests. Again, you attract what you reflect.
Now back to his comment..... I took measures as I got older to reflect back to when I had a higher number of guests retained. Many factors play in this, including image, beauty , grooming and professionalism. Want professional guests, be professional. I greatly agree with looking great! I see stylist ( regardless of size , height , race, background ect)in spandex, t-shirts, no makeup, hair quickly pulled in to a ponytail and talking about their brother in jail, putting a restraining order on a past ex, loudly and obnoxiously. I know plenty of big beautiful women, men and stylists, who hold themselves well, have confidence and I don't notice size or race...i just see a person I'm attracted to, and want more of their presence, especially if they are positive. So yes take a look, stylist at yourself and access how you can give your guest a better experience, with an all over best effort and set an example for yourself, your family, your colleges, newbies and mostly for your GUEST.

You kinda just made the insult worse thhan he did. The with this is that the pure weight of anyone shouldnt decipher success. You are correct when you look great you feel great. And overweight to one is not over weight to others and everyone that has more curves of extra fat on their body dont act the same nor come from the same background with the same morals and vaules or even principles... You see you can put everyone in the same box. I see very slim or fit people in spandex stalking about personal situations (you said brother in jail smh) versus giving education on their clients hair. In fact I know several that are overweight including myself that have college degrees and plenty of education and experiance in the Cosmetology field with over 20 years experiance. I"ve studied and seen how things go and you both are wrong when it comes to the weight and being successful and or professional this is a for given industry our jobs are to simply consistency, to educate and make our clients feel and look at their best. That has nothing to do with our personal image. Now of course be clean and order less and present able but that dont mean That I have to have a fresh hair do like I just left the salon and just in my best clothing and heels and have a rock hard abs either. Because somethings those things are intimidating as well. You may have a potential client that is battleing self image weather small medium or big black asian or white uneducated or educated and the person that this video and E smith are trying to say are the "successful and or professional' stylist can be the rude, judgemental arrogant uneducated less that professional money hunter asses that they run from. Trust me there is someone for everyone no matter what they look like. And yes Im overweight depending my health Im up and down with my weight and yes I feel best when its down.. However that has never taken my successful journey up or down. My work ethic and my skill set and the way I treat people it what drives my success in this industry and often times Im told by my clients why they choice me as their life long stylist and while ( I personally know Im overweight) they only care about how I treat them when they come into my business to be serviced. Im not highstrung, dirty, ghetto, bias, selfish, My salon is Clean and free of Gossip and all about the person in my chair at the moment. These statistical claims are insane and yall should be ashamed. Even those that seek out skinny of fit stylist should be ashamed because that tells something negative about their personality also.

I agree with you even though he's not completely wrong. Plenty of overweight folks thrive in the industry but the fact is many people are biased against overweight women. That's not fair or kind but it is true. I think what he should have said is that the beauty industry is aspirational by nature. And if you wish to be successful, you need to give clients an image to aspire to. To a lot of people that translates to a thin body above all other measures of beauty and wellness, unfortunately.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And from my experience of working in a high end salon for 20 years, you can make people feel beautiful by building them up with your self confidence and by showing them they too can have confidence. Confidence is beautiful, ask anyone. The body is only the first thing they see. Your caring personality is what they will remember. Stay Beautiful girlfriend and best of luck on YOUR journey.

Hi Vickie! Thank you for your complement and thank you for watching!! So in general and without reason there isn't as may walk ins at salon suites vrs conventional salons. The owner of the salon suite should have a directory when clients walk in, there is not much more that could done without having an receptionist??

Being put together and professional is paramount in any profession and having success. I agree beauty professionals need to put more into their look. However, looking Great is subjective. The weight comment was over the top and ignorant. People are overweight for many reasons, for many, it's not keeping up with oneself, but for some, it is health issues they have no control of, i.e. thyroid, and to make mention that such a person can't be successful because of that condition is insensitive and ignorant. To imply that one can't be successful if one is overweight is the most incorrect statement you could have made. I don't claim to know all the heavy players in the beauty industry, but I do know, for example, there is a world-renowned nail artist that is a bit overweight, beautiful, and well dressed, but mostly looks approachable and is incredible in her art and she has more notoriety than you do. It seems to me that some people in the beauty industry need to change perceptions from the day of overly made-up, rail-thin, and fake being "the way to look" and realize now, what is currently considered truly beautiful and learn how to complement what a person is born with so they can leave our salons feeling full of self-confidence, not make people feel they need to be something they cannot be or feel like they need to look "Fake" to be beautiful. "Who is our client base" is what needs to be thought of. The majority of people are just ordinary people that want to feel the best they can with what they have. They want to enter a salon where they don't feel overwhelmed with self-doubt from their insecurities about being "not good enough" or "as good as" the stylists they are seeking help from. If we can accomplish that and make a ton of money, then that is true success!
