I lived in Southern California for many years & remember the devastating horror, especially in the early days, of the AIDS crisis...It was almost like you could feel the pain & fear in the air...
My aunt graduated from high school in 1980 (L.A. County) in a class of approximately 400 students. Within 18 years 100 of them had died...most from AIDS.
Oh, and I might add that she was a "good Catholic girl" back then and was on of the few students who wasn't sexually active...and was ridiculed for it. She's so relieved that she held her ground.
Friend of mine said in the early 80's in LA he would go to the gym and 3 or 4 of his friends would have died each day. The CDC came in to check the air conditioning ducts to see if a virus was spreading through that. No one knew...
Not sure why they are saying attractive (something caucasians use to try to up themselves without warrant). They are all average looking at the very best, but still tragic losses.
Perhaps, but to this day, the disease affects mostly men engaging in homosexual acts. If this were not the case, the rates among heterosexual would be infinitely higher.
@@LUIS-ox1bvit actually higher in heterosexual (at least in my country). Mainly because unloyal husband like to "play" either with sex worker and online dating with guys. And he bringing HIV to their wife. Many cases of HIV infected babies because of this, their mother didnt know and realize they had been infected by their husband (mostly BI husband).
@shakespeare jeru That doesn't prove anything. Robert Reed was married and fathered a child. Joel Grey was married and fathered two children. A lot of gay and bisexual men fathered children.
It is hard to believe that in this day, people still engage in risky behavior exposing themselves and others. No amount of public education can change some people's personal choices.
I lived in north/central Idaho during the 80s. I knew four young men that were gay (smallish town at the time) Now there's only one left but I am so thankful he is.
M GM ...thank you for that. I have lost too many to count. I'm 74 and the 80's were tragic times. And those with Aids were treated horribly by so many. God Rest their souls ...they were so loved.
I very much remember Pedro Zamorah from Road Rules or The Real World, being openly gay and so young at a time it wasn't talked about. He was so brave and so honest and I greatly admired him.
You are correct He was in The Real World : San Francisco but not Road Rules. He was so mature for his age and can't believe he was only 22 at the time of his death.
Another real American tragedy the AIDS epidemic here! We can also thank the late great beautiful inside and out Elizabeth Taylor for her humanitarian efforts for AIDS research! One of the biggest tragedies here is the late Tony Perkins who died of AIDS and then his wife photographer/model Berry Berenson , the mother of his two sons died on Flight 11 from Boston's Logan Airport that crashed into the WTC! She had been on Cape Cod where their summer home was and was traveling back to L.A. so both their sons Elvis and Osgood lost both their parents to horrific tragedies! May they all rest in peace~
The tv show Dark Shadows lost three actors to AIDS (after the show ended in 1971): Christopher Bernau (also of Guiding Light), Keith Prentiss, and Joel Crothers (mentioned in the video).😢 May their memories be eternal!
Thank you for this message. In 1991, I lost someone very close to me, he was down low. Never admitted AIDS for fear of his sexuality being exposed. People who were alive recall how it was. Many women were infected due to this. Children as well. This discussion should broaden to others. Yes, the medications have indeed helped, but shame still surfaces. People infected have other complications that they deal with to stay alive. Get tested and inform your partners. That is my message. Preferably before you decide to have children with a partner who is unaware.
Here in Brazil, hiv-aids also took its toll. Two of our greatest songwriters, Cazuza and Renato Russo, died from aids-related complications. Also, some of our greatest actors, such as Rubens Correa, did, too...
There is an anecdote involving two old ladies looking through the Liberace museum in Las Vegas with one saying to the other "I wonder why he never married?!"
Another made-up one back in the day: Liberace was going to get married; to a very attractive starlet, according to the publicity at the start of his failed movie career. It was then reported that another starlet complained; He should marry me; after all, I have piano legs! Well, it was humorous back then.
The Normal Heart is a great movie about the initial AIDS outbreak in the early eighties in the US, the misconceptions and the awful prejudice victims faced at the time.
These people are not famous for dying of AIDS! These people are famous for having tremendous talent. They provided outstanding performance, they were brilliant. The development of science has accelerated, .. unfortunately also the spread of viruses ..
In my lifetime…I hope that there will be a cure for HIV and AIDS. I knew people that were affected by this cruelty. Most of those people.,,first of all… we’re people. Second, they died a cruel death.
Very impersonal and cold to have AI narrate this homage to these men. The irony is that nobody wanted to be near an AIDS-suffering person in the past, and decades later, nobody (human) is speaking on behalf of the fallout. Have we changed much since then?
The Museum of Natural History has a fantastic exhibit on epidemics/pandemics. The section on HIV/AIDS broke our hearts, but I got to have some important conversations with my students.
It was def saying that they were lovers in midnight express. I’ve watched that movie over idk 300 times. But I could always tell he was gay. Loved him either way. Don’t matter to me at all
IN THE 1980'S AND 90'S AIDS HAD SUCH A LARGE IMPACT ON THE ART WORLD , THAT STILL , IT CAN BE HONESTLY SAID " THAT IN THE LAND OF THE BLIND , THE ONE EYED MAN IS KING " , THE ENTIRE WORLD SHOULD MOURN THE LOSS OF THE GREATEST AMONG US ! AND WE AS A SOCIETY ARE STILL FEELING THE STING , AND SEEING THE RESULT OF THE LOSS OF AN ENTIRE GENERATION OF ARTISTS !
@@okolopierre7504 That's true (especially the part about Gaetan Dugas, who was promiscuous but was NOT any kind of Patient Zero) but it's definitely a chronicle of the way things were happening at the time. There is no substitute for history that was written at the time it happened.
Other celebs who died from AIDS related complications were: Fashion Designer Willi Smith, Actor Christopher Bernau (soap opera The Guiding Light), artists Keith Haring & Roger Mappelthorpe, Dancer Rudolph Nureyev, Actress Amanda Blake (Miss Kitty, Gunsmoke), Rapper/Producer Easy-E, Author Isaac Asimov, Singers Chuck Panozzo (STYX) & Andy Bell (Erasure) Athlete Arthur Ashe, and youth activist Ryan White, and many, many more
I think Andy Bell is still alive. Now, I'm not so sure! There's also another Olympic figure skater gold medalist: John Curry. Actor Robert Drivas, was one of the first reported victims. He was in "Cool Hand Luke" (The dancing guy in prison, who had a scar on his abdomen). Religious people like James Cleveland. At least 5 cast members of "Boys in the Band".
Andy Bell is alive honey... they just put out a new record recently. No one mentioned the drummer from B 52s, or the lead singer of Baltimora (remember "Tarzan Boy"?)
I see the Perry Ellis store in my local mall all the time. It's always kinda erie when I look up and see his name in big, bold letters. He's gone but his brand continues on. R.I.P.
This is exactly why people should settle down with one person. During the AIDS epidemic you had men going to bath 🏘️. I don't think getting a thrill on blueberry Hill is worth your life. And think about the women who weren't aware of their husbands or boyfriends being bisexual because they never bothered to tell them. This makes me angry
I have lost so many friends, loves of my life & even my greatest love of my life from this horrid disease & the lack of sympathy which can be worse when that is all you need…

There was also Terry Lester who played Jack Abbott #1 on The Young & The Restless who had a Heart Attack due to his HIV Status. When you live through the 80's and you're Gay, chances are most of your friends from that decade are all dead. We are survivors who have been together for 50 years.
I and my partner are still here by the grace of God, having lived through the 80's. We didn't know each other then, but have been together now for 18 1/2 years. We've lost many friends between us from hiv/AIDS, and have friends now living with the virus, but have the chance of a 'normal' lifespan thanks to the combination therapies available now. Sadly, we're also seeing some of those friends passing due to covid which they never stood a chance against.😥
I cannot imagine how scary and devastating that time must have been. So happy that you are still here. Since COVID-19, I've lost several seemingly healthy relatives/friends, sometimes a few days after their initial exposure. I'm not trying to equate the two conditions in any way but it gave me an idea of the fear, helplessness and hopelessness you may have experienced then of possibly contracting/transmitting an incurable virus, that your country did not take seriously.😔💗

Actually Freddie Mercury was a lot more complicated than just gay or straight. He was sexually attracted to men but romantically attracted to women. He may have been romantically by and physically gay. But as I said his sexuality was a lot more complicated that's why no one around him would give you a straight answer pun not intended.
Actually Freddie was with Mary in a sexual relationship when he was acting strange, he came home to tell Mary that he’s gay, only she found out first and said “Freddie I know that your gay” he loved her and she loved him, he did have male lovers so he’s gay yes but still could be called bisexual.
I disagree. There was nothing complex about Freddy Mercury's sexuality He and his partners were very typical examples of gay men in that era. I've watched footage of them letting their hair down. He preferred the friendship of women but most likely wasn't into the sexual angle. That too is like most gay men. A lot of us tried cherries and found we liked bananas better.
Freddie Mercurys death was so sad. I wasnt even alive when he died but I always listened to his music and just wished I was alive during the time so that I could have seen him perform live.
Brad Davis wasn't gay. He was in a car accident and given blood transfusions and by doing so he contacted aids. He may have played gay roles in movies, that's what actors do play a role, but in real life he was a straight man.
Yes, but it is not wise to take it. It causes lots of problems, and they don't even know the long term effects. Best thing is use birth control, monogamy, or practice abstinence.
If I say the name Neil Armstrong, and you respond with, "Never heard of him," does that mean that he was not the 1st person to land on the moon? LOL! My Generation knows Shenar from Scarface and Raw Deal. His name is not recognizable, but if you are over the age of 40, his face should ring a bell. Just out of sheer curiosity, how old are you? I am 53.
Brad Davis played a straight man in Midnight Express. He befriended a gay Swedish man in prison, but rejected his advances. Nothing wrong with playing gay roles, the video should just be accurate.
