I really think the Lakers publicly "low-balled" Hurley to push back on the asks from JJ on salary so they can say to him, "We're not paying you more than we'd pay a back-to-back National Championship coach" while helping out Hurley to get more money at UConn. I don't think they ever planned to get Hurley because I think all parties knew he wasn't leaving. This was a public negotiation with JJ.

The history that franchise has? 70 million dollars? Living in LA, with 70 million dollars? I get you take some heat from the media and you're a scapegoat when it goes wrong, but I doubt Ham wasted one second watching First Take and was happy to get paid out of his contract. And maybe Lakers get better matchups and go on a postseason run next year? Sign a big free agent or make a trade? To act like it's a bad job is what would be ridiculous

So many unexamined assumptions here. In what sense is coaching the Lakers one of the "best jobs in sports?" You can make a stronger case that it's one of the worst, at least in recent years - you'll have a bull's-eye on your ass from the moment you sit in the chair, you'll be blamed for all of the GM's screw ups, and you'll be treated like shit when they inevitably fire you. (To say nothing of other assumptions that all media people seemingly have, like any sane person would kill to live in LA or New York - most sane people would actually rather die than live in either place - and probably the biggest assumption, money is EVERYTHING.)

Hurley is a smart man who saw the writing on the wall that the lakers job is a no win situation. He can’t be his best self and most effective with James on the team who’s notorious for undermining coaches if his ego gets hurt so he can push the blame to them instead of it being obvious that James is the biggest problem on the roster. Will be interesting to see what coach will be brought in to be the sacrificial lamb to appease lebron next. Lakers are destined to be mid at best till they have no choice but to blow it all up, days of being an actual contender are long gone for them.

Any NBA head coaching job nowadays is a crap shoot. You can be a good coach, have a winning record, make the playoffs consistently, and still get fired. If you make it to year 3 it is considered an outlier. Especially with teams allowing their stars to dictate almost everything to them from staff to players to scheme, why take a job like that if money isn’t your driving force.

The real news here is that Hurley has clearly sent a message to teams with young talent and draft picks that he is willing to coach their team. He has been clear that he is interested in going to the NBA to a team with young talent that he can develop and by this dalliance with the Lakers he is has demonstrated that he is willing to do it next year. Some teams that meet that criteria have good coaches ( OKC, Houston) but let us look at the example of the Nets - East coast team, some young talent, draft picks . There are other east coast teams that can also do be in play next year - Raptors, Magic ( if they stall) , Indiana ( if they disappoint) , Knicks ( it has happened before with Coach T). The big loser is Detroit who gave the ridiculous contract to Monty Williams.

AKA Who Wants To Be The Last Coach LBJ Gets Fired?
AKA The Lakers Are The Worst Job People Refuse To Say Is What It Is.
20 years apart, the Lakers have taken big swings at the best coach in the college game. With Coach K, he was having the chance to coach Kobe just off a 4th straight Finals appearance. Coach K opted to stay put. The Lakers went ONE SEASON without Phil, missed the playoffs and got Phil back.
Since Phil left, they've run through SEVEN HCs. This is the 4th different person they've had to hire since they signed LeBron. When you've had to burn through 4 different HCs and you just missed on the best coach in the college game who you ridiculously tried to low ball...
(Seriously Lakers? Your best offer to get Dan to leave a two time reigning and defending National Champion to coach a coach killer playing out his back nine and possibly his kid is THAT??? In a lot of ways, the media is to blame for making that Laker job seem like something it's not and will not be for quite some time.)
What is clear and I'm not sure Lakers brass has this in them is just being real about what this is. Right now it's getting through the end of LeBron however long this goes and then the real work begins. Cause the hard reality here is that they can't expect AD to be the #1 option on the floor, but it's LBJ giving his final say on who gets hired. You're not publicly telling folks he's not involved if we don't have good reason to believe he's involved with these decisions.
Weirdly enough, I think the Pels were smart to kick that pick to the Lakers and wait. Cause you just know they're going to mess this up and in a tougher West next season, that pick may end up in the lottery. (Presuming there's no protection on that thing.) If I'm JJ, I turn that offer down. You can do much better for your first gig than wondering which of your assistants LeBron's going to replace you with a year from now. Once LeBron retires, Pelinka's really gonna have to do his job to figure out how to mitigate this thing from cratering completely cause the roster's going to be in supremely sad shape.

I'd be curious if the Lakers gave Hurley a real offer if he'd say yes. 70M for 6 years is not nearly enough to get him to move because I'm sure he can get close to that from UCONN.
Imagine if they offered 90M for 6, now _that'd_ be interesting.

The Lakers are a weird reflection of California.
CA has weather, coastline-beaches, natural and commercial attractions, but the state is broke and can't keep the roads and infrastructure from crumbling.
The Lakers have the name, the history, the caché, but the Buss' are modern ownership-poor and can't/won't spend on a real coach. Even the damn Chargers spent on Harbaugh, but the Lakers can't hire a big-time coach like CA can't fix the roads.

Bill would know better than most how much money JJ earns from Podcasting and broadcasting. I think it's at Least as much as he'd make as a Lakers coach.

As others have said : The Lakers are only hiring a new coach as a "scapegoat", and almost anyone interviewing for that job knows it. But did the Lakers also seriously lie about the contract offer to Dan Hurley? Everyone was saying $120 million, over 7 years, but now it is reportedly $10 million a year - over 40 % different there. As for JJ Redick, the very fact he has not been announced as Lakers coach says they offered him an offensively low salary. I mean does Lakers management not know he played in the league recently, so he knows what a good salary should be. I mean, do Lakers management even know JJ has a podcast with LeBron? The Buss family are cheaping out, just as their player salaries are going through the roof! Don't expect real butter on your popcorn next season Laker fans.
