Never thought of war of the worlds like that, but I'd agree with you. Spielberg specialize in action horror which is still horror.
That's a great way to put it
I love Spielbergs films like Jaws and Jurassic Park, because horror movies are too scary for me and his films are not too scary and not too boring for me. They give me the perfect tension i need.
Haha they are the perfect medium
Steven Spielberg is my favorite director. Was waiting for this video for a long time. And War of the Worlds is criminally underrated.
I saw it in theaters and we left the theater to see one of the biggest storms I've ever experienced happening about twelve miles away, so we had lightning but no rain. Then we had to drive through it. Strangely unpredictably frightening theater experience.
Yes indeed. The last time I revisited War Of The Worlds, I too realized that it is a horror film. It's low-key terrifying.
Excellent video. Lots of strong points made. I agree that the T-Rex attack is so incredibly strong. When they drop the dinosaur through the ceiling with just the screams of the children, and devoid of any music; it’s so terrific.
I don’t think anyone would disagree with your reasoning on whether or not Spielberg is a horror director. While he doesn’t strive to create horror flicks, he definitely uses horror in his moviemaking toolbox.
Thanks for this. Really appreciated this and wow, I really need to watch Duel. Never even heard of it.
Thanks, you're too kind!
I'm so happy you mentioned Duel. It is one of my all time favorite movies, and an early masterpiece of his.
Never thought about Spielberg was a horror director. Now I know how many modern directors are influenced by him.
Very well done team!!
Very happy your essay precedes mine in the playlist. First, because it's great, but also because your analysis of Spielbergian horror ties in nicely with my Close Encounters analysis.
I also very much agree that War of the Worlds is a horror movie. And a very good one too.
Haha you got to love the synergy.
dang, i caught this early
Happy to have you!
@@CenterRow thanks
This movie made me fear the ocean more than any shark week ever could....
10/10 One of the greatest films ever made.
Also Awesome video as always man! Keep it up! 👍😎👍
It's so good!
And thanks!
Great video man. Extremely underrated channel
Thank you!
Great to see a video on this. I have always thought as much. As a kid I was terrified of parts of E.T., the 'invasion' sequence in Close Encounters and even the first parts of Hook....
Spielberg’s best movies always lit an adventurous spark. Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, ET. they all transported you out the normal life. I only watched Goonies as an adult and it still incited the same kid like wonder as the others.
And ever his modern movies “Ready Player One” and “The Adentures of Tintin” were reminiscent!
Most underrated channel out there
Thank you! Feel free to spread the word.
Patrick Willems and Chris Stuckmann also pointed this out
But yes, nobody is as horror centric or influenced than Speilberg, and I strongly consider War of the Worlds a horror film
Also he directed a made for tv horror film called *Something Evil*
A comment for that algorithm
Have another
Look man, I want you to get your view, but I realized at @10:28 I was short of breath from breathing too hard and almost closed the tab. When you put it together like this it makes me reconsider whether I even _like_ Spielberg as a director.
YES
I don't know what a movie has to be, or what elements it has to contain in order to be classified as a "horror" movie.
But, if you are personally defining a horror movie as anything that instils the feeling of fear in you throughout its duration, then Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest horror movie directors of all time. Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds...these movies are truly great horror movies, for that is how I think of them. They make you feel fear and tension _constantly_ as you watch them. What is a horror movie if not that?
And by that definition I would also call Jurassic Park one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
Yes exactly! That being said, one of these days I might make a video delving into what exactly a horror movie is and why most people count some movies and not others.
Great Video
Thank you!
Of course Spielberg is a great horror film director. But, he's more than a horror film director, he's the best director of all time.
la la la I dance
what a great vid this is la la la
Bless you Jack
This vid is very good in-itself, but the topic was explored three years ago in a slightly shorter vid by Patrick Willems: ua-cam.com/video/YWqyNE6ok14/v-deo.html
If you like this one and don't know Pat, check it out!
The fav is Jaws
Spielberg has always been more than the blockbuster man. It's a pity that his other films like The Sugarland Express, The Color Purple, Schindler's List, AI, Minority Report, and Catch Me if You Can aren't mentioned as much. They're better than Hook, Lost World, and Kingdom of The Crystal Skull
Right?
@@CenterRow yeah. AI is one of my favorite films, and it's a shame no one talks about it as much
It's very underrated
@@CenterRow I'd love to see you do a video on it
I still think Duel is Spielbergs most uunderrated film because I hear next to no one talk about it aside from Center Row of course
What if we're living in a simulation and one we get advanced enough reality restarts again because we can make it look how our real life looks The only thing that you could tell different between a movie and real life is some of the shadowing and modeling is slightly off and some particle effects are very very very small detailing is pixelated slightly
God, War of the Worlds was soooooo close to perfect…till the fucking end
Dear center row, can you please make a video about overrated movies, like get out also can you make a video about underrated movies like real steel please
Spielberg directed POLTERGEIST. I work with him. This is well known.
For me. He was one of the first introduction to horror. Ooooowwww...... Not just you. hahahahaha!!!!!
I'm going to take the weird argument that Spielberg did in fact only direct one horror movie, but I contend that it isn't Jaws, it's Jurassic Park. I have my own definition of horror and thriller that I think works, and it makes Jaws a thriller.
My definition is that horror is when the killer (human or otherwise) is hunting the main character and a thriller is when the main character is hunting the killer. This is why, despite some truly horrifying moments, no one calls Seven a horror movie, because it's about cops chasing the killer. Jaws is about Brody trying to get rid of the shark. Sometimes the shark has the upper hand, but the only time that Brody is in danger, he is knowingly putting himself in danger. In Jurassic Park, as soon as the T-Rex paddock scene starts, it is only about the main characters trying to survive. There is no, let's beat the dinosaurs moment, it is strictly, let's get away from the dinos before they kill us.
So, by my definition, Jurassic Park is horror and Jaws is thriller. But your larger point remains accurate.
Interesting! Honestly that's a fantastic point
@@CenterRow Thanks. Nice to know that I'm not crazy. To your point though, I'm not sure why I don't consider War of the Worlds a horror movie. I think it's because when the danger is on that grand of a scale it feels more like a disaster movie than horror.

What about duel that’s a great suspense film
If jaws is horror, jurassic park has to be
Right?
Jaws 2 shark attacking Jaws girl while....eating Steven. Lovely lol
Haha Steve popping out of the mouth was Eli's idea
Yo Ben are you ever Going to do another live stream I hope you do another one I love that stream
Honestly I'd love to! Didn't think anyone was interested to be honest!
