  • I thought I found the perfect canoe for me, the Swift Prospector 14', and now that I've had time this year to put it to the test, I'm very happy with my choice. A few days ago I took it out on a backcountry lake near my log cabin and caught dozens of fish out of it, including several bass on a fly rod. Fly fishing out of a canoe can be tricky and it requires good balance and this canoe performed perfectly for the situation.

Hi Shawn , I've enjoyed canoeing since the 1960s and can appreciate the lighter weight , I also enjoy cycling and can appreciate the lighter of my 3 bikes for long rides . In just over 2 weeks I'm going on vacation from work and I'll be hitting the roads for about 7 days riding my bike back home from Quebec, I'll be riding back into Pembroke from Quebec and then make my way home here to Hamilton. I'll be hitting up Algonquin park ( the east side) for a few nights stay and with hopefully be having fresh fish for breakfast/ lunch and dinner . Love your videos and experiences that you share on UA-cam, best regards from Lloyd.

The romance of the canoe on a nice calm quite body of water so connected and peacefull
I have not been in one since I left Upstate NY 30 years ago I live on the water here just don't feel comfortable when you have a twelve foot gator stirring at you as your launching your boat not the place to roll your boat
The north country is on my bucket list for this activity

Thanks Shawn. Been considering a canoe after watching you enjoy it for a couple years now. I brought my old sit on top Sea Kayak up with me to the cabin here. Not too stable in the afternoons when the wind picks up. Been caught in white caps before when the wind really got going. They do have nice fishing kayaks, but the diversity of a canoe, and just their history, is attractive to me.

February this year we picked up a Swift Prospector 16 in carbon fusion. That boat is absolutely awesome! Space for gear, two of us, or I can paddle it alone if I wish, still works just fine. We're looking at going to Adirondack Park later this year, and paddling the Connecticut River....which is just a few hundred meters from our apartment...as well. Absolutely adore the boat. Weighs in at 34 pounds as well. :) Great boats! Enjoy!

Great video Shawn. I miss my canoeing on the upper Potomac River near Washington, DC. I had a 17 foot aluminum. Show the folks how you load the canoe up to your shoulders. Not easy the first time. I hope you wear a life jacket while out alone in the middle of no where. Not a bad idea to secure a line to you and the canoe. Amazing how fast the canoe can drift away from you with a light breeze. As I got older I found out I could no longer swim. Didn't swim that much to keep it up. Sure looks like a wonderful place to canoe and right in your back yard.

Assuming your wife took the still of you with the canoe in the sunset, she has a real talent and you should showcase more and she exhibit/sell them.
As I recently said in one of my videos, everyone should have a canoe. The freedom and closeness to nature can't be beaten. Good run down as to why you've chosen this particular boat.
No lakes to paddle in my part of the UK, but hundreds of square miles of river. So no excuse. I'll have to look at the Swift canoes over here, though I suspect price could be a factor...and room to keep it :)

I have an Old Town Outfitter 147. I think that it is too much canoe for solo tripping. In fact, unless you are carrying a heavy load, it is just too much boat. The high load capacity keeps it riding high and above sweet spot so it's tippy when not loaded. I want to get a solo canoe, but I weigh more then the weight capacity of solo canoes. I am looking to get one that I can modify into just the right craft. Your new canoe looks great! Can't wait to see the guys back together for a cool trip!

Just watched Jim's video of trip with him and his brother. Your canoe seems to have a center seat and has lots of tumberhome. Went to Swift's website. David Yost, Mr. Tumberhome, designed solo. And I see reasons for your love for these boats. Swift brings so many ideas from everyone and blends it into one.

All I had was a cheap but new single seat Old Town bought back in 1993. Took it all over in Colorado where I live as well as Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and up to Alberta and B.C. Went up to Canada twice for weeks of vacation.
Even though I have been in beautiful CO. since 1969, I can say that the Canadian Rockies are beauty beyond compare. Especially with the turquoise glacier silt lakes and rivers and the incredible shear mountains peaks. Drive only 3 min down the road through the National and Provincial Parks and it looks like a completely different mountain range and peaks. I even took my canoe to Moraine Lake which is on the older Canadian $20 bill.
As I carried my canoe to it's shore and put it down by the rental canoe dock, I got such strange looks from people. Found out later that only those rental canoes were allowed on that lake back then. Yet nobody stopped me from canoeing on it.

it looks like it does good in the water even though being so lite. We always used the sportsman pals they were fairly lite but the rocks would eventually kill them. i remember using contact cement and pop/beer cans more or less what ever we could find to make repairs. every trip is different and you remember them accordingly great video the fish look s ed good.

Awesome canoe. I would love to have one someday. Currently they're out of my price range ($3500US). I have two 12ft Old Town Royalex Packs that weigh about the same. Obviously not nearly as fast but it works for going down the rivers near my place in Montana and packing into some of the Lakes. I go on trips with a lot of kayakers and I much prefer my Pack(more comfortable, easy to get in and out of, pack your gear. I have some float bags, a spray skirt and I use a kayak paddle so I can do just about anything a kayak can. One advantage is that you can jump out and go over the shallow spots easier then with a kayak. I have a 16ft OT Royalex Penobscot for longer trips or 2 people. I got them all used for pretty reasonable. Unfortunately they don't make Royalex anymore. It was a good lightweight strong material.

Canoes are very old style boats, which is their charm. If the design aint broke, don't fix it--it has worked forever. I love the videos where you and whoever you are with are out on the water, in the elements. I can't say I've ever eaten fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I sure like the idea :D Be safe, please wear your personal flotation device, and enjoy!!!

I would concur that Swift makes some fine crafts for water travel, up to date with materials and beautiful lines and a respected design crew. I so enjoy my Swift Prospector 15. Do you find your new boat more tricky to handle the wind, as the pack boats bring a lower stance in the water? I don't mind mine in the wind, but have also not take out a pack boat before, tempting to have one on hand but cost keep me from having another high end canoe.

I'd love to have a lighter canoe especially with my back condition. If you check out the pictures on my profile you'll see pictures of the two canoes that I have. I have a cedar glass canoe that I don't mind beating up a bit because it's easier to repair if it hits against rocks and stuff. My cedar strip canoe however I only use it occasionally but only if I have sand to put it in on. It's over 25 years old and I plan on passing it down to my son later on so I don't want to beat it up to much. Small scratches are easily repaired with a bit of sanding and some apoxy resin and it's good to go.
I too like the Swift canoes for they're quality and variety of different types of canoes and how light they are however I never had the opportunity to try one out. I especially liked the pack boat that Joe uses.

Kinda wish you had given us a video tour of the canoe itself. What does it look inside? Show us the seat and the underside. No biggie but I value your opinion and the gear you use. What is it made of. Anyway, sail on!

Shawn, another excellent upload. What is the song or who is the artist for the music you’re playing in your videos? My wife and I both love it and would very much like to purchase. Thank you.

    Shawn,
I own a swift pack 13.6 and love it for a solo day canoe. My question for you is the amount of tumblehome on your new prospector. Do you find that you can lay it on its side, Canadian style, or does it become tippy when you roll it that far to the side? For me, flared sides don't interfere with a J or Canadian stroke. They also shed water and are more stable for me. Really like the specs and look of your new canoe, just want to hear you thoughts about the tumblehome.

Have you had a chance to get out with Cali yet since uploading this? I have a Swift Keewaydin 14 pack and bring a 6 month black lab out with me everytime and was wondering about the stability of this boat for the future when she is full grown.

Great video, how's the upper and lower garden doing?

So far the upper is growing faster than the lower.

Smart move on the stability. I lost my Hero7 on a kayaking trip 1 week after I bought it. Even with the float accessory on it. Right now it probably floated down to Lake okeechobee Fla. Reminder to self.....tie it to something when you are kayaking down a fast moving river/spring during rainy season in Florida. Still kicking myself in the arsh!

I almost lost mine too, so you're right, tie it down and make sure it floats

@@ShawnJames1 Oh it was floating, but it was floating so fast down the center of the current I couldn't catch it. I did capture the video on my phone of where it was going for a while but never caught up to it. lol. I am glad you saved yours.

    Hi Shawn,
Just found your channel searching for Swift Prospector 14 canoes. I'm placing my order this week. I noticed you have a camera mount on the deck of your boat. Was that added by Swift, or did you add that yourself? If the latter, what camera mount did you use? I'd love to place one there as well.
    Thanks, c.
