President Franklin D Roosevelt speaks to the nation from behind a desk (C/Us).
He talks of how the Americans have "sought no shooting war with Hitler", but says they do not want peace so much that they will allow him to attack US naval and merchant ships that are on legitimate business. He calls the Nazi submarines and raiders the rattlesnakes of the Atlantic and makes the warning clear that if German and Italian warships enter waters necessary for American defence, they do so at their own peril. He says "There will be no shooting unless Germany continues to seek it", and ends by speaking of this latest assault upon the democracy, sovereignty and freedom of the American people.

Americans can’t win. When Americans go into other countries we get blamed for “meddling with the world”. When we wait, people get mad at us for not coming in sooner.
They shouldn’t have declared war when the British did. At that point it was a European war and nobody knew exactly what was going on in those concentration camps.

Britain actually needed everything they could get, and were essentially under attack. The USA could afford to actually sink their own boats, and the escalation was necessary to them whereas the UK were already at war, no need to escalate if it’s already happening.

Highly unlikely. The New Deal was extremely progressive, even for our time. Modern Republicans and trump supporters are often supportive of dictators like Putin and Orban, and the people who called themselves “America First” back then were against entering the war.
