De La Soul understood the power and the magic of the number 3! It's all throughout the universe.... No more no less, you don't have to guess... When it's three you can see in this mystic trinity.... It's a magic number! I like the respectful nod to Johnny Cash towards the end and his song "3 Feet High N Rising". Very cool!
This is one of my all time favorite albums! I'm pregnant right now and I just stick headphones on my belly and hope that little baby is bopping her head to these songs too.
De la soul changed my whole entire life. I had alot of insecurities in my childhood. Then I heard three feet high and rising album. "Me my self and I" and I have been a better and more confident person ever since.
I’ll never forget when I first heard this song. It was summer 1991 and I was working my first job at a camp in New Hampshire that employed mainly New York City kids like me. A group of us was walking back from the lake and the guy I had a crush on was blasting this very song on a beatbox ahead of me. I already knew Me Myself and I but something about hearing this carefree, fun jam as we walked through the woods hit me like a blast of pure euphoria. The song ended and the guy switched cassettes and in the process of doing that, dropped the tape. I picked it up and looked at the title and made a mental note to buy it immediately. A few months later, De La Soul Is Dead came out and I was now dating the guy with the boombox from the camp. Together, we went to Tower and bought the brand new disc and that’s when I became a true-blue De La head. They were there with me through my teens, my 20s, 30s and 40s and now I’m introducing them to my 5 year old daughter. De La forever and ever.
Seeing the lyrics for the first time, I'm amazed at how complex the words and rhyme scheme are. Nobody was rapping like this in 88'-89'. Heck even todays rappers have dumb down their lyrics way more. This shows how advanced De La was from day one.
