Lyrics
Three
That's the Magic Number
Yes it is
It's the magic number
Somewhere in this hip-hop soul community
Was born three: Mase, Dove, and me
And that's the magic number
(What does it all mean?)
Difficult preaching is Posdnuos' pleasure
Pleasure and preaching starts in the heart
Something that stimulates the music in the measure
Measure in the music, raised in three parts
Casually see but don't do like the Soul
Cause seein' and doin' are actions for monkeys
Doin' hip hop hustle, no rock and roll
Unless your name's Brewster, cause Brewster's a Punk (three)
Parents let go cause there's magic in the air
Criticizing rap shows you're out of order
Stop look and listen to the phrase ya Fred Astaire’s
And don't get offended while Mase do-si-do's your daughter
A tri-camera rolls since our music's now set
Fly rhymes are stored on a D.A.I.S.Y. production
It stands for "Da Inner Sound, Y'all" and y'all can bet
That the action's not a trick, but showing the function
Everybody wants to be a deejay
Everybody wants to be an emcee
But being speakers are the best
And you don't have to guess
De La Soul posse consists of three
And that's the magic number
(Three)
This here piece of the pie
Is not dessert but the course that we dine
And three out of every darn time
The effect is "Mmmm" when a daisy grows in your mind
Showing true position, this here piece is
Kissin' the part of the pie that's missin'
When that negative number fills up the casualty
Maybe you can subtract it
You can call it your lucky partner
Maybe you can call it your adjective
But odd as it may be
Without my one and two where would there be
My three
Mase Pos and Me
And that's the Magic Number
(What does it all mean?)
Focus is formed by flaunts to the soul
Souls who flaunt styles gain praises by pounds
Common are speakers who honor the scroll
Scroll written daily creates a new sound
Listeners listen cause this here is wisdom
Wisdom of a Speaker, a Dove and a Plug
Set aside a legal substance to feed ‘em
For now get 'em high off this dialect drug (Three)
Time is a factor so it's time that counts
Count not the negative actions of one
Speakers of soul say it's time to shout
Three forms the soul to a positive sum
Dance to this fix and flex every muscle
Space can be filled if you ride like my lumber
Advance to the tune but don't do the hustle
Shake, rattle, roll to my Magic Number (Three)
Now you may try to subtract it
But it just won't go away
Three times one?
(What is it?)
(One, two, three)
And that's a Magic Number
(Yo, what's up?)
(1, 2, 3)
(I say, children, what does it all mean?)
(Woah-woah-wo, 1, 2, 3)
(I wouldn't lie to you)
(No more no less, that's a magic number)
(No more no less)
(What is?)
(No more no less)
(Do the shing-a-ling)
(No more no less)
(Anybody in the audience ever get hit by a car?)
(No more no less)
(How high's the water, mama?)
(No more no less)
(How high's the water, mama?)
(No more no less)
(3 feet high and rising)
(No more no less)
(3)
(That's a magic number)

Came here to celebrate, honor, and pay my respects to Dave Jolicoeur. De La is one of my favorite groups ever. My heart goes out to Posdnous, Mase, all their families, and the entire “hip-hop soul community.” What an immeasurable loss. Three will always be the magic number. RIP Plug Two 🌼
Beautiful sentiment.

Trugoy just passed. RiP
I've never seen a comment age as badly and quickly as this.
RIP Trugoy the Dove. You forever changed the landscape of hip hop and all of our lives. Love, gratitude, respect, peace. Thank you.
I thought seeing Toby and Andrew in the same spider verse as Tom’s Spider-Man was the best thing I’ve seen, but seeing and hearing this song at the end of the movie took No Way Home from 10 out of 10 to 13 out of 10, it was the best, thank you for creating such a masterpiece ❤❤❤❤
I agree 💯
Well I'm sorry to inform you that one of the members of De La just passed and it was the homie Dove 🕊️
@@KingPin23rdOfTha1700 I heard damn they just started uploading all their songs to UA-cam and now one of the members passes what a shame!

Congratulations on this great victory! De La Soul is forever! Rest in peace Dove!
I’ll never forget when I first heard this song. It was summer 1991 and I was working my first job at a camp in New Hampshire that employed mainly New York City kids like me. A group of us was walking back from the lake and the guy I had a crush on was blasting this very song on a beatbox ahead of me. I already knew Me Myself and I but something about hearing this carefree, fun jam as we walked through the woods hit me like a blast of pure euphoria. The song ended and the guy switched cassettes and in the process of doing that, dropped the tape. I picked it up and looked at the title and made a mental note to buy it immediately. A few months later, De La Soul Is Dead came out and I was now dating the guy with the boombox from the camp. Together, we went to Tower and bought the brand new disc and that’s when I became a true-blue De La head. They were there with me through my teens, my 20s, 30s and 40s and now I’m introducing them to my 5 year old daughter. De La forever and ever.
Long Live De La Soul.
you guys are from the soul, one love and long life.
Peace and Love to you brothas. This is 35yrs in the makin. Krazy how timeless this piece is. Flash back to the good old days when I first heard this back in 89. Classic and it still sounds fresh.
1988 please come back...Miss the Old School rap like this De La Soul gem.
That Native Tongues late 80s/early 90s sound will always hold a special place with me. It was the sound that started my life long love of hip hop.
Im glad I have all of their music when it originally dropped. Prince Paul elevated the sampling game with this album
RIP Dave, Your music meant everything to me.
R.I.P. Dave, Plug 2, Trugoy the Dove. Nothing but love and respect to the hip hop pioneers De La Soul. ❤️
This is one of my all time favorite albums! I'm pregnant right now and I just stick headphones on my belly and hope that little baby is bopping her head to these songs too.
I love that!! ❤️ Hell yeah!!!
Literally took me back to the first time I heard this when I was 15 in 1989, my eyes are welling up w tears of joy rn. Thank you for making this!
R.I P Trugoy... you and De La introduced me to my first love.. Hip hop!! This was the tune. Damn 😞
De la soul changed my whole entire life. I had alot of insecurities in my childhood. Then I heard three feet high and rising album. "Me my self and I" and I have been a better and more confident person ever since.
SO HAPPY FOR THIS SONG THE EARTH NEEDS YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER
3 Is Still The Magic Number!!! I remember buying this on Cassette and taking it everywhere I went...Heavy Rotation! Merci Beaucoup De La Soul!!! Long Live TRUGOY!! 🕊🔌🔌
De La Soul vibes all day! The best thing about De La is returning to magical classics like this. And also finding hidden gems like "Navajo Rugs" with Stalley years after the track has been released. De La are the EPITOME of real hip-hop.🔥🔥🔥🙏
Rest in beats Plug 2, glad a new generation got to hear this on Spiderman last year
I'm so glad to see this song getting a quality re-release with a cool little lyric video
So stoked all this is coming back! THE BEST. Never forget hearing this album for the first time. It’s the Sgt. Pepper’s for Gen X. Nothing touches it.
Love you De La!!! I had this album on repeat when it came out and it has withstood the test of time. Congratulations 🎉🍾 I am so happy for you!!!
Listeners listen, 'cause this here is wisdom!
It's 2023 and I still listen to 80s and 90s hip-hop🙏🏵💮🌸💐🌼🌻💘❤
大好きな曲です❤️
Seeing the lyrics for the first time, I'm amazed at how complex the words and rhyme scheme are. Nobody was rapping like this in 88'-89'. Heck even todays rappers have dumb down their lyrics way more. This shows how advanced De La was from day one.
Absolutely
Awesome 👌
3 becomes 2 but the third lives on, the soul is at peace and will never be gone. Every time one of the songs is on... rip
Run DMC were the 1st group to get me into hip hop in ‘86 but the Native Tongues cemented that lifelong love with De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest spearheading that movement. RIP Trugoy The Dave, hopefully the new generation will appreciate what you’ve blessed the world with when the back catalogue hits streaming services for the 1st time.
This Hip Hop Soundtrack Was An total Absolute Awesome!! De La Soul will Never die. And Spider-Man No Way Home the Best MCU Movie Brought Me Here!🕸️🕷️🕸️🔥💯💯💯
Congratulations to finally be free 🙌 lets all get this all the listens it deserves this easily should be 500M+ 🤟
In memory of Dave Jolicoeur, otherwise known as Trugoy the Dove. I first heard this tune back in 1991, I have been hooked onto it, ever since. It is a really memorable tune, one that stays in your head forevermore and I love the animation of the video too. Well done, De La Soul!
高校の時DJ始めてデラソウルにハマって、この曲スクラッチしまくってあなぁ。今聴いてもカッコいい!!
Quotables for days! Can’t wait for the albums to drop
Going to be the best music video ever.
it was the best music video ever.
Ima stop you for a second, Beyonce got one of the best music videos of all time
So so so happy for these dudes. They changed the game and took hip hop to another level. God bless my brothas.
11 year old me fell in love with this album, by 13 I had two turntables and a mixer, by 15 I was making beats... 30 years later I'm still making beats and still love this album.
Seeing them live in Bristol with my Mum for her 50th birthday last April was absolutely magical, a memory I'll treasure til the day I die.
Huge love & respect to De La Soul, and to all my fellow fans 💚
The best Hip hop group of all time. Let’s argue…
a tribe called quest
THE...ROOOTS
Clearly
If you like De la you like The Root and Tribe lets be real
The Roots, Tribe Called Quest, Tha Lox just to name a few. But Clearly De La Soul doesn't get enough credit, there Top 5 Best Hip Hop Groups Ever. ✌🏾 To All My Hip Hop Heads🎶🎶🎶
Let the long overdue applauding of the excellent work of De La Soul begin!!!!
I always loved this song especially the scratching at the end. De La Soul deserves this 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Grew up with De La! RIP Trugoy!
Although it may have been over a year since the release of NWH, what matters is that we’re finally going to be able to stream De La Soul’s “The Magic Number” come Friday, LFG!!!!
I love that a whole new generation finally has access to this hiphop brilliance! De La Soul is back!
Growing up as a teen in the 1980s I loved this group and the school house rock sample 😁
The Rap Gods are back!
No more, no less, De La Soul the best😍
I turned my son's on to De La Soul with this classic back in 09 when they were still in elementary school they are in their twenties now and still love De La .🥲
The greatest drum sound of all time. Bravo Prince Paul
That's drummer John Bonham with Led Zeppelin "The Crunge"
bokrusher
Indeed. From Houses of the Holy. Released 50 years ago this week. Bonham was the greatest and most sampled drummer of all time.
I think people are gonna start rapping like this again very soon; it's that 30-year swing that happens in music all the time
Hope you're right
I've seen a lot of musicians go back to there roots over past 2 years so I can see some of the newer artists trying to emulate that old skool feel
That would be good!
please!!
Well that's the dream!
Classique,classic,klassiker and more……👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I used to listen to this back in the day on disk when it first came out. Then when my brother was in college 8 years later, we would sit in the room and party to this. Peace and Love. RIP Plug Two.
When I first hear this I immediately thought Led Zeppelin.
One of my all time favorite De La Soul tracks !
I luv this
yessssss
So happy to see that De La Soul I’m finally getting the rights of their work to be on all streaming services. I still have the cassette, record and cd. Today I placed a pre-order for 3feet High and Rising…… tears of happiness!!!
SO excited for this - love that the video pays homage to its inspo, the OG Schoolhouse Rock
Edit: aw man they took out the “anybody in the audience ever been hit by a car?” sample!! Lol
This is what bothered me about this album being reissued for streaming. I suspect some samples are going to be removed across their catalogue. This issue also happened with The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Ready To Die" and The Pharcyde's "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde".
I had a feeling this was going to happen. I like streaming out of convenience but this why I am against the "streaming only" mindset. I will not be getting rid of my 3 Feet High and Rising CD I've had for over 20 years.
EDIT: It also sounds like the "do the shang-a-lang" sample changed as well.
What a strange thing to remove. Any idea where the original audio is from?
@@alexmoffat7302 Eddie Murphy's self-titled standup album
they changed the pitch to do the shang a lang
Dope. Yall Toke it all the back to 1989. The daisy days. It's my Bday... This was a great way to start it off 😁
Classic. Second CD I ever purchased after Kool Moe Dee. Love this
My favorite group of All time my friend's ❤
Love it. I hope the world goes back actually understanding what artist are saying over a track. Or when rap meant something and people had something to say that was useful to everyone’s everyday life. That’s the kind of music I make at least
I Love you guys
This gotta be the universe at this point🤣🤣 I hear you Universe I'm listening!!!
This is the first song that introduced me to the world of De La Soul in early 1990’s. RIP Trugoy
ITS THE MAGIC NUMBER!!!!
I am so pumped that this is happening! I asked for this album for my 15th birthday back in 1989 and I got it! It was so otherworldly amazing and really helped me with finding what music fit my personality as much as lots of alternative and synth pop bands did at the time. I’ve always bemoaned the absence of this album on streaming services and assumed it was because of sample licensing. I’m so excited for its rebirth and hope that younger people (as well as any people who didn’t hear it at the time) get to experience how mindblowingly inventive and creative this band is. De La Soul, from the soul, love you forever.
EDIT (3 days after my original comment) to say Rest In Power to Dove. How heartbreaking...my sympathies to his family, De La, and all of my fellow fans.
My dad used to play this de la all the time. He was crying when he found out he died. When I went into music class the next day I walked into this song playing with my teacher playing the bass to it
Thank you
I silently lost my shit when this started playing during the NWH credits
RID PLUG TWO aka TRUGOY THE DOVE!!!! MAY YOU RISE IN DAISIES!!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE 3FT HIGH AND RISING!!!
One of the best leading songs on an album or tape of all time. It set the tone for the whole album. I got this tape as soon as it dropped and it was life changing. It's part of my life changing top 10 albums.
R.I.P. to a legend love and peace to your beautiful family
Rest in Power, Dave.
WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE
21 and I love DE LA SOUL and the whole Native Tongues family. Peace love and happiness.
