Hi please respond its urgent, On your Google sheets for best programming laptop there's the lenovo slim pro 7 which is the sweet spot for price for me but on the best buy link u posted it's only available with the 7735HS and when I went to search for the 7840HS all I could find was the lenovo yoga slim pro 7 now question ARE THEY THE SAME LAPTOP? They look identical with the same specs but I don't want to make a mistake and go for something that's not what I want. Please respond
Hello, I am following you from Iraq, I hope that you recommend to me a laptop Muneeb for design and programming with good capabilities and a balance of $ 500-700 with the laptop link because there is someone I know in Amrbaka and during these days he will come to Iraq so I will pour him to bring it with him I hope you reply to my message
hello sir i am sahil, my interest in coding, web development. i want to become a good developer but i have no laptop and i am not able to buy it. i am belong to poor family. so please can you give me any good laptop in your treasure. And may I be grateful to you all my life
I was really considering the Dell XPS 15 laptop for Mechanical Engineering, now I’m not too sure due to the cooling system. Any Windows recommendations? 😊
@@rondon7145 in my opinion you're better off with a gaming laptop, a nice pick would be an HP Victus laptop, you get a dedicated graphics card (GTX 1650/RTX 3050) for graphic intensive work, a snappy CPU that won't disappoint (AMD/Intel) and a very effective cooling system at almost half the price of the Dell XPS 15 Disadvantages are the loud fans and the heaviness.
That's kind of the reality if it though. Something at the $500-750 price point probably isn't going to be impressive if you need to do graphic or cpu intensive tasks lol. My major practically required a minimum of a 3070 on a laptop because exams and labs were rendered and everything. Super cool, but $3k on a laptop that is already obsolete was stupid as hell. Also, a 3070 is hardly enough for some of the math or developing students, it kind of just depends how much you genuinely need. I'd say 98% of all people are fine with a 60 series or last gen AMD 😅
as someone who is always short on money, a laptop is not something you want to be cheap with. trust me, a good one will last you your entire college career if you invest in one instead of buying a cheap one that breaks on you halfway through the semester
I'm not even a student, but so much of what you go over is important to me as an author. Battery life, fan noise, portability, value, and the ability to last me a few good years are the biggies for me. Thanks for the great breakdown, it helped me a lot!
Size + lightweight does work well for students IMO. Screen size is more than just how many lines of code, but also how much you see when using side-by-side windows, and how big videos look. I switched from a Surface Laptop (very good for its time) to a LG Gram and the upgrade in screen real estate while reducing weight was astounding. Ever since, I haven't bothered to look at a 14-incher.
_"how much you see when using side-by-side windows, and how big videos look"_ This. I do this every day, having video / zoom on the left and my spreadsheets / notes on the right. Now I cannot use anything less than 16-inch.
@@lars2894 over time, i personally have come to the conclusion: fast switching > large screen. I rather have a little smaller screen with easy key combinations to switch between windows efficiently than having a larger screen and having all windows open at the same time
Picked up the Zenbook 14X and ultimately ended up returning it.. Despite Josh's review, I found it getting very hot overall more often than not and the fan was louder/running with a higher pitched whine. On top of that, if you like to read a lot, the OLED screen has a bit of grain/screen door effect that dithers the text and for me, made it hard to read fine/small text which was another dealbreaker. After trying about 6~ highly recommended laptops (also featured in this review) I ultimately settled on the HP Spectre 2023 i7 with the 3:2 FHD+ screen. I have a set of benchmarks I run and I got 11 hours, 45 minutes on my 200nit UA-cam video rundown test on the Spectre vs 7 hours 20 minutes on the Zenbook 14X. The battery life on the Spectre is on another level for a Windows laptop. Happy hunting!
The Zenbook 14x is running an H series CPU with a single fan, which is quite unfortunate. Notebookcheck said something similar to you, so who knows if there's just differences between units or if Josh has newer firmware that improved things
Prices in US are absolutely insane compared to Europe. $699 for Zenbook 14X from the video at bestbuy at the moment. Insane! Back in Europe it is priced at around 2000 euros! Damn I’m speechless
Tech is much cheaper here, because we have lots of competition and innovation. Europe used to be great at tech (Nokia, Erricson, etc.) but havent been able to keep up or not interested anymore
Here in Europe it is not much better currently (in my country at least). If you want the best prices, you gotta wait for like September or October till December, sometimes January when prices are getting way better like every year because sellers gotta sell it. I buy only in this time period 😅
Nah, the price difference is not what you are saying. Zenbook 14x is around 1000 eur tax included. These US prices are listed without taxes. Additionally, there are often several different specs under one name so comparisons need to be made between equal specs. Most of the time the price difference between EU and US is within 10% when adjusted for tax and comparing equal specs.
One of the aspects you need to consider is the charging method. It is a serious advantage if a laptop can be charged using a regular USB-C charger (even if slower). It is incredibly useful if you forget your charger, and practically everyone can help you. Or, when you can go to another place for a few days (vacation, training, conference) and bring just a tiny and light GaN charger that works with all your electronics.
@@JustJoshTechjosh, is it possible that a brand-new laptop in this case ux6404vv is shipped with extremely bad/(ly applied) CPU paste to the extent that 3-4P cores throttle at 25-30w?< ----------- The laptop has a 125w thermal headroom, but the CPU can barely achieve anything beyond 60w..
Addition: laptop is designed to sustain 90w CPU TDP with 115 PL2 boost. It doesn't achieve anything near that much. Meanwhile some people I know have achieved ~20 000multi on Cinebench just by repasting with LM. I get 14500 multi with a completely stripped, gutted windows11🙁
This guide is amazing! Information can be digested by anyone, no matter their technical prowess, but still manages to give insights for experienced buyers. Good job, Josh & the team!
The fact that you included software development and other uses beside video editing and gaming makes your channel a lot more holistic & useful than many other hardware review channels.
Love this video, but you left out the students like me who love to game, work, AND draw. I like to do it all. 2 in 1 laptops like those you mentioned (yoga 9i, spectre x360) have no discrete gpu and thunderbolt just doesn't cut it, especially on the go. I did a TON of searching before I bought my new laptop and found just ONE laptop that can do everything with a dgpu, decent build quality, & good battery life. The Asus ROG Flow X16 (as well as other flow siblings). Please review or discuss this laptop, it's a game changer!!!
I bought the MacBook Pro 14 with M1 Pro as a business student doing photography on the side, and I have to say it is one hell of an investment. Not only is it a bliss doing school and photography work with the computer, but I feel that I'll be able to keep it for a very long time. Money well spent.
Josh I've always been a lurker in most sites I visit but your videos are just too good not to comment. Thanks to you and the team for everything you do!
Great video Josh! One word of caution for those who are purchasing laptops for software development in college - contact your Computer Science department first! I know that the university I went to had us working on projects that would only run on x86 Windows for several classes. It wasn't a problem for students with Macbooks at the time because we could just use parallels or bootcamp (preferable) but the M1 Pro cannot run x86 Windows. I would simply double check and make sure that you can use an Apple Silicon Macbook to do all your course work. I know personally, I only use Mac laptops since Apple Silicon and the MBP 14 would probably be my pick unless I didn't have a choice.
I recently did some exhaustive research and ended up picking a Zenbook 14 Flip OLED, which wasn't directly covered here, but I'm really excited to get my hands on it. Seems like it has all the benefits of the 14x but a slightly less powerful processor, which is fine for my needs.
I feel your pain. Finding a laptop is so much harder than it should be both because companies withhold some specs and because sometimes the filters don’t work as they should.
@@jdified8815I was thinking of buying a laptop surface book3 or zenbook 14x pro duo something that is powerful at the same time reliable something that does not break what would you recommend.
The best laptop for students coming from a recent college graduate who was on a budget and studied IT is actually the HP 15.6" laptop 15-dy2792wm. It can be found for under $400 and has the latest 12th gen Intel core i3, 8gb ram, and 256gb SSD storage. I had an older version with the 10th Gen i3 and very similar specs which allowed me to do highschool work and 2 years of college. For most students who won't be doing intensive/demanding task I recommend this laptop without a shadow of a doubt. You can also find a more expensive version of this with an Intel core i5 but I don't really see it on sale. Just do research
The Vivobook series is nice too. They feel only slightly cheaper than the Zenbook while often costing less/the same for way better specs. Vivobook Pro 14X (OLED) with a 3050 comes to mind as a good option for someone who needs dedicated graphics performance (for CAD or 3d modelling or art) while not needing something top of the line and not wanting to break the bank. The Acer Swift X also falls into this category, but I don't really like it's feel
I was really considering the Dell XPS 15 laptop for Mechanical Engineering, now I’m not too sure due to the cooling system. Any Windows recommendations? 😊
I got a 2020 g14, and stock, it wasn't great for school at first. Fans were clogged up with dust, and so it made a very noticeable whirring noise. I was debating getting a new machine. Instead, I went the more cost-effective route. After buying a new pair of fans ($20) and upgrading the thermals to k5 pro paste ($10) instead of thermal pads and thermogrizzly kryonaut on the dies ($15), It can now passively cool itself while doing anything that doesn't require the GPU (CAD and other simulation software), which it was never able to do stock. Being able to code, surf the web, do any video playback, etc, on a silent machine without buying a new macbook was fantastic. Moral of the story, you can breathe new life into a machine with the magic of new thermals or maybe a new battery. My battery is at 70% capacity but still lasts me a good 7 hours straight(I've done quite a bit of extra battery saving stuff behind the scenes though), so plenty for classes. If it ever does get bad within the next few years, it costs $50 for a new one. Learning the basics of how to work on your machines is a real money saver!
Asus has a 2-in-1 Zenbook with a 1340P for $999 before sales at Best Buy and Amazon. Seems like a solid competitor to the 2-in-1 recommendations and all others besides the Zenbook 14X. Thanks Josh!
The Zephyrus G14 is probably the best option if you require graphics performance, e.g. as a graphics student with 3D graphics or when running CAD software
As somebody who had the Razer Blade 14 & MacBook Pro 14, I can safely say the Blade is better UNLESS you want the maximum possible battery life. The problem with Macs for software development is that something just do not work, like VMs and other software that just isn't as good as on Windows or in some cases doesnt exist at all on macOS. Thr price of MacBooks are also insanely high for usable configurations. Personally, the only reason I returned my Razer Blade 14 was because I got a Framework Laptop 16 instead. I never noticed to warmer feeling keyboard and while the price is higher, it is far more upgradeable than a Mac, with two RAM slots, a removable Wi-Fi card (and you WILL want to replace it because the default one isn't amazing) and a replaceable SSD. Again, the price is very high, but when you match the specs of the MacBook Pro 14 & Razer Blade 14, it isn't very different. TL;DR: Unless you need macOS or the maximum possible battery life, there are better options than the MacBooks for software developers. And as somebody who values right to repair, the Macs are instant non starters for me. And sure, the Framework Laptop 16 certainly isn’t going to be perfect, but unless you need a laptop with Nvidia GPUs (for CUDA or OptiX), then I'd suggest you give Framework's laptops a chance and try to get an order in. The AMD Ryzen Framework Laptops look to be very good and very likely better than the already good Intel models.
Are students likely to encounter the kind of issues you are facing on MacOS? Don't universities typically provide remote environments for edge case situations that would require a VM or some sort of niche software?
check with your university. I know many do provide those but I don't know if it's all. I have the same issues on my mac so I cannot recommend it for development in particular.@@darthbumblebee7310
This would have certainly been useful a few weeks ago! I was already very surprised after seeing what a good deal the $700 Asus ZenBook 14X you've recommended in your descriptions is.
I found this a great video. The best part, is that you moved from sharing an Excel file to a nice web site, easier to maintain for you, and easier to check for visitors. I just would suggest that you add a “Category” filter, like general, gamers, designers, developers, students, and so on. Congratulations!
one laptop that hasn't been mentioned but is worthy of consideration imo is the Asus ROG Flow X13, especially the 2023 version. Gorgeous 13.5" 16:10 touchscreen panel, great CPU (7940HS), stellar battery life (Ben G Kaiser measured 12 hours of productivity and 10 hours of video playback in his tests), 1 TB of storage and the option for dedicated graphics up to a 4070 (tho at 60w). The integrated graphics is also plenty fast for most people, the 780m is the one powerful the ROG Ally and other Ayaneo handhelds which puts it at around a desktop 1050 / 1050ti, so definitely enough for indie games the only downsides imo are the soldered RAM (16 GB for every model except 32 GB for the 4070 one) and the display only being FHD on the model with only integrated graphics and QHD for the others.
I have a Flow X13 2022 with the RTX3050 and it has probably been my best purchase. Using the touchscreen to annotate notes has never been easier, and the great battery life allows me to take it to uni without needing to bring the charger. Gaming on the side is also pretty decent, although it is not powerful enough to run modern AAA games. If you're a student that uses many formulas which is a pain to type out, I can definitely recommend this laptop!
@@AdaDenali sorry I should've worded my comment better! I meant to say don't expect to run AAA on high setting with killer fps, after all the 3050 is low wattage. But to be fair, I don't play AAA titles myself, so I actually wouldn't know what the performance would be like :P
Asus ROG X13 or X16. It has all the cpu and gpu power you could possibly need, great convertible 16:10 screens with touch and pen support, very thin and very light, if used in silent mode the fans are completely disconected meaning that these laptops are dead silent. They dont really ever get too hot on the keyboard. Oh and the battery performance is pretty good too. Im always amazed how reviewers always seem to forget the ROG X series from Asus...
Personally I purchased an Asus vivobook 16x and I very satisfied with the performance and battery life. Although it is on the larger side being 16 inches and the fans kick in when under load and the screen is not as bright maxing out at 300 nits. In general for coding is really good and the 16:10 aspect ratio makes better for it, the 5600h provides a decent performance for light gaming. The price is also quite low at around 500-600$(for the base model) and I have been really happy.
This is an exceptionally well done video. I was just scrolling along and this was a very productive and engaging 13+ mins. Definitely valuable information for my upcoming laptop purchase!
For basic office/word processing/excel etc use I found that a touchscreen is a reaaaaaaaaaaally welcome feature. I have purchased a number of laptops over the years and Lenovo is the best for me: highly configurable, and getting 16Gb or RAM doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Lots of models come base with it now. While you can't really have cheap, powerful and light all at once, Lenovo provides a good set of options, from the McBook-esque Z13 to the workstation-type Thinkpads with lots of I/O and ability but more bulk.
I had a lenovo bought for $1k back in 2015 and it lasted me 6 yrs even after id dropped it several times and the frame was coming off slightly. Definitely took its fair share of beatings.
This years ROG Flow X13 has great build quality and feels really nice. I think the integrated graphics version would be a nice recommendation for a student. It's sold out at Best Buy, but last year's version with the dedicated graphics is $850 USD right now, which isn't so shabby
Couldn't agree more. I have the X13 2022 model and when I use the integrated graphics (which has plenty of power, even for gaming) I got between 7-9 hours of battery life under normal use. And considering it has a touchscreen and doeesn't start at too high of a price I feel like it might be a better choice than a G14 for example
Any thoughts on the Acer swift go 14? Latest gen i7, 16gb lpddr5, 2.8k OLED display. I've noticed the price of the Acer is more competitive than the Zenbook in my country
@@kyleebrahim8061 well, the Swift Go will give you no gaming performance (wouldn't be too confident in video editing either), no touchscreen and from what I have seen seems to have a badly designed keyboard. If that doesn't hold you back then it might be a reasonable choice for you. The biggest pro of this laptop seems to be the screen from what I can tell and that gets progressively less good the lower the price goes
I got an x360 16" with a minor dedicated GPU (Intel A370), absolutely love it for what Ive run it through (900+ page word documents, Autocad 2d and 3d modeling, and media consumption) I got it for 1450$ when it runs for 2000$ and am very happy with my purchase. As an engineering student taking my sophomore/junior level classes I do not regret it. Edit: I use a Samsung s6 lite for notes and my laptop for the study sessions in library/my room that follow
I was really considering the Dell XPS 15 laptop for Mechanical Engineering, now I’m not too sure due to the cooling system. Any Windows recommendations? 😊
I loved the video and the amount of work put to it! However, I do think that Framework 13 laptop should be somewhere in the list. Upgradability + repearability make it the perfect heavy-duty laptop that can resist getting carried around daily for 5 years. I can't think of another laptop that could remain as useful after 4 or 5 years of study. Most in the list would become obsolete (outdated processor or OS, maybe even both!) or simply are not made to withstand the amount of work that a normal student puts on their laptop.
I was really considering the Dell XPS 15 laptop for Mechanical Engineering, now I’m not too sure due to the cooling system. Any Windows recommendations? 😊
Omfg i'm with you. I'm currently using the 2020 Spectre x360 & absolutely love this little laptop in almost every way... but my only wish was that HP would update these to include an AMD U-series processor, then it would be the perfect laptop for me.
Amazing list with a lot of recommendations for different kind of students, I kinda wishes you include the Framework Laptop 😅 should have liked to see how it stacks Up against all the competitors 😊
I got the Yoga 7i for 549 and the Yoga 6 was available for 499 at best buy. I think these are actual student budget prices and outstanding laptops for the price. I don’t think laptops worth upwards of 900 are budget or student friendly prices. The Yoga 7i I got is an outstanding deal, amazing keyboard, good speakers, decent screen, good battery life and amazingly build quality, it’s also 360. The only downside is a U series processor. But it’s more than good enough for most students who are mostly using office or browsing the web.
Hi mate, I should have mentioned Yoga 7 and 6 as I did look at them. Yoga 7i I found the screen a little dim compared to my top picks here but.... most important thing is that it works for you. Then it is The Best. Everyone is unique!
@@JustJoshTechyes the 300-320 nit screen is a little on the dimmer side but it regularly goes for sale at around 500-600 usd. At that price it’s an insane value. Especially the build, keyboard, trackpad and Windows hello facial recognition and fingerprint scanner.
The Asus Zenbook Pro 14 x6404 is a huge win. Others that I think are great for college students are: -M2 Macbook Air 13.5-inch - Dell Latitude 7440 from the Dell outlet store. - Lenovo ThinkPad T14 G3 from Amazon.
JJ, love the video, as always man. I know you pour yourself into your work, and i know this for no other reason than the quality and frequency of your videos, not to mention the number of devices you buy for a channel of your ever-growing, but smallish size. So I know you know this and it was probably too late to fix (or possibly an issue with UA-cam compression?), but the audio levels and gain seemed to change at a couple different points in the video. It was very slight, but just thought i'd mention it just in case. Have a great weekend man.
Surprised to see Framework 13 not make the list for the best student laptops. As far as price and ability to upgrade the laptop down the line is concerned, I think framework should easily be on the top of the list. Can you please review Framework 13 as well?
I want to love Framework, but apparently they have poor battery life and really loud fans. Hopefully the Rizen option will help some, but I don't think those versions are out yet. Those are the two things (battery and fan noise) that bug me about my current laptop, so I had to pass on Framework (for now).
As an engineering student myself, depending on your specific field, you may need a more special laptop. For their mechanical engineer path, my school has some fairly strict requirements. As we'll be using Solidworks, a Mac is not allowed, and whatever laptop I chose needed to have a GPU support by that CAD software. Ultimately (I paid a pretty penny for it too), I ended up getting a Dell Precision 5770. The build quality is amazing, and it has 8+hrs of battery life. I specced it with an Intel i7-12700H CPU,an Nvidia RTX A2000 GPU, 32 GB of memory, 1TB of storage, and the 4K (3840×2400) touch display. It is not a small or light laptop however, it has a 17" display and weighs 5.5lbs. It does exist as a smaller 15" or 14", as a Precision 5570 and 5480 respectively.
@@gabrielulibarri9950 Thanks or the advice! I'm not sure the exact software I'll need be using but after doing research I do think CAD and Solidworks are ones that I'll be using. I'll definetly check the Precision laptops either 15" or 14".
Yeah, I remember when I brought my massive laptop into class and opened it up blocking everyone's view of the teacher. They never forgave me after we all failed that class 😭
I need a laptop for 3d, animations and professional work in addition to studying. Is the lenovo legion pro 5 (r7, 4060) a good choice? And does anyone have any recommendations?
Please make one video for poor countries. Here in my country I can barely afford $600 laptops. Those prices are just ridiculous and out of touch for %70 of world population. I would like to see your options at a range of $400-$700. Edit: Today I purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 with 12th gen i7 CPU at $550. It also has an IPS panel.
Any thoughts on the LG gram 14? I was thinking of getting one because it seems light, long battery life and decent performance and I was surprised not to see it on the list. Is the zenbook just better?
This guy is right about tablets being a pain to balance. I bought a Magic Keyboard for my iPad Pro, and a Macbook basically for the lols and out of FOMO, and I absolutely LOATHE using the Magic Keyboard on the iPad for anything that's not a flat surface. Trying to watch media on it in bed or on a soft surface, and it tips over like 90% of the time. It can be counter-balanced by putting your phone on the keyboard itself to act as an extra weight. But it's really a headache. I would not recommend it. I got the iPad for art, so I enjoy it for what it does. And it's a very handy device. But I haven't found it work in a way that a laptop or PC does. It seems like a hassle. HOWEVER, since I need the iPad, and I don't need a laptop. If I had to choose only one device, it would always be the ipad.
Very informative video. This is a really good guide for students especially those looking for a balance between budget, performance, and features. Awesome work for the team!
Great video. One note of caution re the slim pro 9i - I tried to order this some time ago, with a promise of delivery within a week. Which then became 2 months, probably. Gave up and bought an M16 instead and very pleased with it
The best laptop for students is Asus B1 br1402f (500-550$) 2in1, garaged stylus, fanless Decent cpu i3-n305 (9W) is better than i7 10810u This laptop is very good for all-day use and office , but it is very bad for gaming.
I can second this, especially if you use VMs. Most VMs won't run well on macOS on Apple Silicon Macs and some other tools just do not work well on Macs period.
I have been doing software development professionally on macs since the apple silicon processors came out. I have not had any significant issues in awhile. Ymmv though.
@@darthbumblebee7310 yeah it's definitely YMMV. i work for a cybersecurity company as a software dev and we have software compatibility issues with m1 macs - and we're a newer company so we're not using outdated stacks and such. some of us have intel, others have m1 macs. m1 virtualization is nonexistent and we just need to do workarounds in general that take longer compared to intel
Dissapointed with your tested laptops. When you look at every factor you mentioned, the Rog Flow X13 and the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 OLED are by far the best options.
I'm currently using a Huawei Matebook B5-430 (from Huawei business line-up). It has an Intel Core i5-1135G7, 512GB storage and 16GB Ram....and it works great. I don't game or video-edit on it, but I do work with Photoshop and Affinity Photo daily and the laptop is absolutely snappy, doesn't get warm (I felt it become lukewarm at most) and handles all my workload fastly and without any lags. Before this I had a Huawei Matebook D15, which had a solid and steady performance too....I honestly would recommend Huawei laptops, and not just to students.
I bought a Vivobook S14 X and will be reselling it. The fan is beyond loud and the CPU (Intel i7-12700H) easily reaches 70+°C idling. SMH, will be sticking to my old Vivobook Flip 14 with an AMD R5 4600U. A joke in performance, but at least it is completely silent and doesn't get hot.
5:00 is it weird that my uni does not offer any discounts when purchasing a laptop? You can borrow one from them if you prove you don't have the money to buy one, but that's about it 7:30 What about the Zenbook S13 OLED (2022 model with Ryzen 7 6800U)? Better performance than most Intel processors and still quiet and cool, with an amazing screen Pretty sure the Framework 13 with AMD will be one of the best laptops in this list.
Looks like the sale on the Zenbook 14X is over at Best Buy, yesterday it was $699, today it is $999, should have pulled the trigger and ordered one yesterday.
Just a note to all buying for uni or school, I got through uni with a £100 thinkpad 13 7th Gen i5. 16gb ram. Used. You can buy and upgrade or just buy like this. Other Thinkpad or non thinkpad models would do the same job. Edit: ebay but uni insurance was cheap even though I didnt go for it.
2:41 in reality even for those who need performance for development or math, 13th i5/i7 U series CPUs are more than enough powerful. You do not have to necessarily get a P or H series CPU
the moment you said you had a spreadsheet i subscribed to this channel. FINALLY someone on this joke of a platform who actually does the work, has the resources, and who actually knows how to measure tech and not waste people's time. THANK YOU.
Great video. You really convinced me to get the asus zenbook 14x to replace my old macbook, now that in uni i have alot of coding courses. Here in EU i can find on official Asus estore a version of the 14x with a rtx 3050, i don't really understand why nobody rewviewed this version of this laptop. I also recommend Lenovo Thinkbooks. I got a ThinkBook 14p Gen 3 AMD (14”) for $816 after all discounts and taxes and I’m very happy with it. It’s pretty light, fast and well built.

I think that it is a little unfair to viewers to only mention at the end of the video that some of the laptops were given to you by the manufacturers. I would have watched the video under a different light had I known this.
This is an amazing refresher since I am planning to buy a laptop soon. Thank you so much your videos are amazing and particularly this one is so good!!
It's so hard to find laptop reviews for entrepreneurs that work aggressively and always use zoom and laptop mic. Cuz everything is cater to programmers or students.
Perfect timing and thank UA-cam algorithm. I am going back to school after working 5 years of labor and trade jobs. I want a office job now. I was originally going to get the xps 15 with a 4050, but I don’t really want to spend the ~2000 after tax with the current sale and I already have a beefy desktop. I think I’m going to get the zen book 14x for the current $700. Was also thinking a m1 air for 749, but it only has 8gb ram and the uni I’m going to recommend windows. Edit: also makes no real sense to get the XPs 15 over the zen book, other than maybe the better speakers which is kind of important to me.

Hi please respond its urgent,
On your Google sheets for best programming laptop there's the lenovo slim pro 7 which is the sweet spot for price for me but on the best buy link u posted it's only available with the 7735HS and when I went to search for the 7840HS all I could find was the lenovo yoga slim pro 7 now question ARE THEY THE SAME LAPTOP? They look identical with the same specs but I don't want to make a mistake and go for something that's not what I want.

I was really considering the Dell XPS 15 laptop for Mechanical Engineering, now I’m not too sure due to the cooling system. Any Windows recommendations? 😊
@@rondon7145 in my opinion you're better off with a gaming laptop, a nice pick would be an HP Victus laptop, you get a dedicated graphics card (GTX 1650/RTX 3050) for graphic intensive work, a snappy CPU that won't disappoint (AMD/Intel) and a very effective cooling system at almost half the price of the Dell XPS 15
Disadvantages are the loud fans and the heaviness.
@@NavidAmingheidari for the vast majority, an MacBook air is enough
“Mom, this guy is lying! I cant get school work done without an RTX 4090!”
I'm not even a student, but so much of what you go over is important to me as an author. Battery life, fan noise, portability, value, and the ability to last me a few good years are the biggies for me.

Better gone with HP envy x360 costs less with similar specs
Prices in US are absolutely insane compared to Europe. $699 for Zenbook 14X from the video at bestbuy at the moment. Insane! Back in Europe it is priced at around 2000 euros! Damn I’m speechless
Noticed the same.
@@good-tn9srmuah. These are mostly Asian brands.
I agree 100%. The reason I didn't mention it is because all laptops in this round up had it. So it wasn't a decision factor for this one.

I bought the MacBook Pro 14 with M1 Pro as a business student doing photography on the side, and I have to say it is one hell of an investment. Not only is it a bliss doing school and photography work with the computer, but I feel that I'll be able to keep it for a very long time. Money well spent.

Very true. I think I mentioned this in the other vid best laptops for programmers

@@darthbumblebee7310 They did when I was a student, but it was tightly controlled.
check with your university.
Great minds think alike. That is happening!
one laptop that hasn't been mentioned but is worthy of consideration imo is the Asus ROG Flow X13, especially the 2023 version. The integrated graphics is also plenty fast for most people, the 780m is the one powerful the ROG Ally and other Ayaneo handhelds which puts it at around a desktop 1050 / 1050ti, so definitely enough for indie games
the only downsides imo are the soldered RAM (16 GB for every model except 32 GB for the 4070 one) and the display only being FHD on the model with only integrated graphics and QHD for the others.
I am really looking forward to Josh's review of the updated x13
I have a Flow X13 2022 with the RTX3050 and it has probably been my best purchase. Using the touchscreen to annotate notes has never been easier, and the great battery life allows me to take it to uni without needing to bring the charger. Gaming on the side is also pretty decent, although it is not powerful enough to run modern AAA games. If you're a student that uses many formulas which is a pain to type out, I can definitely recommend this laptop!
@@hehexdsui it’s gotta be at least as good at running AAA games as my mobile 1650 lol. I play Halo Infinite on low settings and it works fine.
@@AdaDenali sorry I should've worded my comment better! I meant to say don't expect to run AAA on high setting with killer fps, after all the 3050 is low wattage.

In sweden that laptop cost around 1200$ :(
how about the QC? I heard from people around me that Vivobook feels cheap to use and the screen always wobble while typing
can not stress how important the warranty is for anything you choose for your college computer.

@@kyleebrahim8061 well, the Swift Go will give you no gaming performance (wouldn't be too confident in video editing either), no touchscreen and from what I have seen seems to have a badly designed keyboard.
I agree that Framework should have been brought up in the discussion! I guess the focus for Josh was on the more mainstream brands.

JJ, love the video, as always man.
I'll be starting my under study as an engineering student and this video was a life saver! Thank you Josh!

I need a laptop for 3d, animations and professional work in addition to studying. Is the lenovo legion pro 5 (r7, 4060) a good choice? And does anyone have any recommendations?
Thank you so so much! This was an amazing video and you saved me a lot of time and money.
16GB of RAM?
@@upgradestore8785 yep. 16 GB DDR4.
One of the best sources for great laptop comparisons. Thank you!!
Gave up and bought an M16 instead and very pleased with it
The way his voice changed!! Seems more energetic and full of life. You can tell he's enjoying his new life and the YT life
The best laptop for students is
Asus B1 br1402f (500-550$)
2in1, garaged stylus, fanless
Decent cpu i3-n305 (9W) is better than i7 10810u
This laptop is very good for all-day use and office , but it is very bad for gaming.
Dont get a mac for software development (or engineering in general). A lot of the programs youll be using just aren't available or have weird issues
@@trademarktmel so which laptop would you recommend?
so which laptop would you recommend?
I've had the asus g14 (2021) since August 2021 and it's been amazing so far!
Love the videos Josh. Always concise and to the point, thoroughly researched, etc.
Thank you so much!
just bought the macbook air m1 a couple of months ago and its still more than enough for student purposes. No need for me to spend any more money.
This review is amazing! Loved every part of it. Gave me a clear view on choosing my next laptop for school!
I'm not a student but I don't need a gaming laptop so this video is perfect for me. I also specifically wanted a 14inch screen. Thank you!
Thanks for the guide man! Looking for a laptop for college and this helped a lot!
I'm the one who told him to review the zenbook 14x so feeling pretty dang proud rn
There is a ryzen version which lasts even longer and is cheaper but is 90hz
5:00 is it weird that my uni does not offer any discounts when purchasing a laptop? You can borrow one from them if you prove you don't have the money to buy one, but that's about it
7:30 What about the Zenbook S13 OLED (2022 model with Ryzen 7 6800U)? Better performance than most Intel processors and still quiet and cool, with an amazing screen
Pretty sure the Framework 13 with AMD will be one of the best laptops in this list.
Super high quality and helpful video from start to end. I can see the time and effort put into it. Thank you so much 💓
Looks like the sale on the Zenbook 14X is over at Best Buy, yesterday it was $699, today it is $999, should have pulled the trigger and ordered one yesterday.
So much appreciate the google sheets you did!
THANK YOU.
Awesome video! I don't know much about computers, but your explanations were easily comprehendible for me! Thanks
Thanks so much, I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure this out on my own
Hands down the best guide. Actually explaining stuff that matters to me as a student!
this helped so much, THANK YOU!!!
You are awesome for adding the DOCS sheets!!! perfect information and data.
This is the real deal. Comfort, weight, lines of code are so important
I think i'm buying it, hoping the fan won't be too noisy...
I recently bought HP Spectre x360 16. It is a beast. I'm majoring in CS and it works so smoothly.
I also recommend Lenovo Thinkbooks. I got a ThinkBook 14p Gen 3 AMD (14”) for $816 after all discounts and taxes and I’m very happy with it. It’s pretty light, fast and well built.
One annoying thing about is that most all ports are in the back
After some extended research I opted to go with the yoga 9i for my next 2 years of school. Can't wait to try it out
Snagged the Zenbook the day before it got off sale couldnt have gotten luckier lmfaoooo
Had to watch twice because watching josh talk about laptops is just so refreshing. I bought my First laptop from watching his reviews and after 2years, no regrets (Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15, Ryzen 4500u.)
You are a legend!
Thanks for such a detailed guide!
Man! I'm loving Josh's content even more after his resignation. This vid clearly has more energy and work invested into it, even has some musical touch to it. Compendious!
Thanks mate. We are trying
@@JustJoshTech Thank you for responding Josh. I watched ALL the videos on your business channel.
My thoughts:
1: I would LOVE to buy any coaching services if you ever decide to offer your corporate wisdom via coaching calls.
2: I'm a licensed IT professional, and I have 3 Salesforce certifications(2 in software development and 1 in administration/declarative solutions). I have experience in full-stack web development and Salesforce development of 10 years.
3: 2 is the reason why I would be interested in 1. 2 is the reason why I always related with you more than any other laptop reviewer because you approach this subject with the perspective of a professional software developer because you have been one yourself all your life, and a great one who earned millions with this skillset.
Thank you for adding so much value to my life via both of your channels. I've been watching your content for a very long time.
I think that it is a little unfair to viewers to only mention at the end of the video that some of the laptops were given to you by the manufacturers. I would have watched the video under a different light had I known this.
Thank you, Josh! You helped me a lot with this video
Super helpful video, my laptop just died and I feel much better after having these info
This is an amazing refresher since I am planning to buy a laptop soon. Thank you so much your videos are amazing and particularly this one is so good!!
Thank you, Josh. Your video is top-notch. It explains things very well and is informative. I didn't have to skip anything.
