Reclaimed Bowling Alley Floor Transformation (Maple Refinishing)

In this video, we are refinishing a floor that was reclaimed from a local bowling alley. Commercial spaces need really tough hardwood floors so maple was an obvious choice for them. We will start out by showing you the maple wood floor and talking to you about the process of refinishing maple and whats different about it. Maple must be sanded to a higher grit than other types of hardwood flooring. This reclaimed floor also has some damage that needs to be patched. Since the floor is historical and special we don't want to introduce new wood into it. We will actually remove one of the broken planks from the middle of the floor and replace it with one in the closet.
This turned about to me a stunning transformation and a very successful floor refinish.

Having spent years in the hardwood floor industry here in Nebraska, I was under the impression most bowling alley floors were 1 1/2” thick, not 3/4”?

That old maple floor was most likely hand nailed with 8d casing nails..they tend to crawl out more than cleats or staples..its an old loose floor,it is what it is..i never would stain a maple floor.just doesn't accept stain very well or even.
