  • Project Rust: Come Urgently | BMW 840CI Sport [E31] Restoration
    Part 1: BMW 8 Series E31 840 CI Sport - Project Rust:- in this episode of the Craigs 8 mini series, I start the restoration journey on my car and unexpectedly discover that all old BMW's have rust, even the well looked after ones! Theres only one thing for it - at 23 years old this BMW 8 Series E31 840 CI Sport is going to be treated to a full on deep dive to find the dreaded rust and then banish it, for the next few decades at least. Join me as I visit the Auto Resto workshop to see what progress has been made on the project so far:
    This episode documents the initial strip down of the car - removal of front and rear windows, interior trim, and the shock discovery that the roof skin has to be taken off and thrown away. Viewers will also get a sneak preview at a car that I won in an online competition!
    Did you know I have other videos all about my BMW 840 CI Sport? Check out the Craigs 8 mini series playlist, link below:

    Love the 840i!! That’s been the white whale of my bmw ownership. Some day.

      I got to a point 3 years ago and just thought i had to make it happen! I had missed the boat on cars like the z3m coupe years before and thought if i don’t buy an e31 now i never will. Don’t regret it at all - even if i am now discovering rust rust and more rust 🤣. Make sure you inspect closely at any e31 you do look to buy 👍

      @Braylen Emmanuel why do you keep spamming this everywhere? I bet in a moment your friend or some random person will say they tried it too and it’s great….. lol. It’s quite boring now.

    Be interested to know what your costs will be Craig as my 840 could do with a similar approach 🤔

      Its certainly not going to be a cheap project, already had a few surprises over and above the original quote like front windscreen, roof skin and headliner. It may end up being double what i originally budgeted 😬😬. I’ll cover costs in a future episode im sure but feel free to message privately on instagram or twitter if you had any questions. Thanks for watching / subscribing and i’ll keep the updates coming 👍

      @@CraigOnCars it’s generally very clean but does have a little coming through on the wheel arches - think I’ll bite the bullet in the spring when the weather has improved a bit.👍

    • @CraigOnCars
      @CraigOnCars  3 роки тому +1

      Thats a very common area for them to go but a simple job for any decent workshop. If its just the arches wouldnt be an expensive job either. Good luck!

    Hey Craig, good to see another 8er making such great & informative videos. Good work & keep it up. All old cars need considerable TLC. Once done, it will be good for another 30-40years!!

      @CraigOnCars  3 роки тому

      Thanks Lindsy! Still very much s learning process (the film making and E31 ownership) but hopefully i’m doing right by the car and it helps raise the profile a little for others to start appreciating just how great they are. Now, i need to rob a bank to get this project finished. Things are escalating! 😂

    Hi Craig - great vid mate and thanks it brings back memories on all the work I got done on mine. As a heads up I have to say it looks they’ve done that the hard way!!! They didn’t need a skin on that - most of it was good
    At 15 odd minutes they try to diagnose what causes it. Sunroof drains, condensation? It’s none of those. It’s actually the little trim clip mounts, they are also little drains, but, in their infinite wisdom the gutter recess finishes slightly below the level of the last one in all four corners. The rain very very slowly trickles in over the years, gets trapped and causes that. U can see which way they have been parked for most of their lives. On that car the osr corner was the lowest so probably on a left hand curb or slightly sloped driveway 🙄 But anyway she’s going to look great and as long as u garage it this will never need doing again!

    • @CraigOnCars
      @CraigOnCars  3 роки тому

      Thank you glad you enjoyed! You may be right on the roof skin i was hoping they could save it but at least taking the old one off and new one on means theres definately no chance now of any other hidden surprises up there - just hope the sunroof goes back together properly!
      Really interesting info thank you - who’d have known!

    • @varchitectinblack3307
      @varchitectinblack3307 3 роки тому +1

      Yes the sunroof is a pain the parts internal are extremely fragile. I had my headliner replaced and the sunroof stopped tilting. I’ve since had to replace a number of bits with the sunroof - I would expect you will have the same challenge unfortunately. Yes, my headliner including the sunroof panel is with the trimmers right now being done - all new material. Very useful link, thank you!
