You are absolutely right. It's not a "special" kind of rock -- it just has to be any rock that's harder than the steel. When a tiny sliver of steel is chipped off, the carbon in the (high-carbon) steel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere. This reaction produces molecules of CO and CO2 (carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide) and releases the excess energy in the form of heat as a visible spark. Once the spark lights on the char-cloth (carbon) the reaction continues. Blowing on it adds more oxygen to the mix. Thanks for the video. That was cool. Just sane... :^) Saint

I'm glad you used naturally occurring flint, not the ferrocerium rods that are sold as "flint." Anyone who has the presence of mind to bring a "flint" and steel firestarter could more easily bring a lighter. In fact, for the cost of the ferrocerium, you could buy many lighters.
Basically everywhere, at least in northern europe. Also when it comes to the steels, if you have an old file, works wonders as a steel. As a blacksmith I use old files to make steels for the viking era. Just make sure it is hardened correctly. The carbon content is important, but if it is not hardened correctly it is useless.
how are you going to make a charred cloth if you don't have a fire to begin with? Is there an alternative replacement for the charred cloth? Asking because I'm lost in the woods and im cold as hell right now
I made a fire tube tender it works too, just use cotton clothes line in a tube singe the end , pull it back in tube and push it out, hit the spark on it, light the tender and pull the ember back into the tube and put it out.
WOW you answered a lot of questions I had. I thought it was the flint rock that made the spark but you say it is the steel that does it. So really there's nothing special about the rock? Like too how you placed the charcloth on the flint stone. "High carbon steel" I've heard that over and over. What is it. Would stainless produce sparks? Blessings, John 20:29

I found that the best way to light char cloth is a box of matches.
where do u buy that type of design steel

Is the steel reusable when the bit of steel has been used for a long time?
The steel will last almost forever. You re only shaving a tiny amount with each strike.
I made a fire tube tender it works too, just use cotton clothes line in a tube singe the end , pull it back in tube and push it out, hit the spark on it, light the tender and pull the ember back into the tube and put it out.
