  • At the last remaining swing bridge in Texas, someone has to make sure boats can pass through on the merriest of nights.

To most people, swingbridge means a large truss bridge that pivots in the middle to clear marine traffic. But in Texas, a swingbridge could also mean a pontoon swingbridge that swings to the side to clear water traffic. Which appears to be what this is. You are not kidding about the number of this type of swingbridge. I remember not 1 but 2 of them on the J.F.K. Causeway connecting Corpus Christi with the North Padre Island. The first one crossed the Humble Channel and the second one crossed the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which at that time was called the Intercoastal Canal. Humble Channel swingbridge was replaced with a low fixed bridge and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway swingbridge was replaced with a tall bridge, tall enough to clear water traffic. This story brought back memories of the J.F.K. Causeway swingbridges. Thank you Texas Country Reporter.

We used to take the swingbridge to Surfside Beach. Sometimes, it would be hit by an errant tow, disabling it for hours and stranding people on the beach. It, too, has been replaced by a tall bridge.
