  • All aboard! The SC-44 "Charger" is a new diesel-electric passenger locomotive built by Siemens Mobility in Sacramento, California. In this video, we will take a look at several of these new locomotives as they enter service on the Pacific Surfliner. You'll see the Chargers leading regular Pacific Surfliner trains as well as multiple locomotives running on some trains as they are tested before being allowed to run on their own.

      There are SC-44s pulling MARC trains (in Maryland) and I have noticed that when rolling at speed, the MARC passenger cars are actually louder than the SC-44 locomotive. I, too, dislike the look of the front of the Charger, but I think the grills on the side are sick.

    The EMD F59PHIs were probably the best fit for the Surfline ... Until now that these Siemens Chargers have "bumped them out of service". It's now time to say farewell to them as they head over to Metra, but even so I am certain that they will work just as well over in Chicago as they did over here.

      True, but I'm happy for new investment in the railroad. While the F59PHI's have served dutifully for years, it's time for the Chargers to take charge and keep the service going, just like the Sprinters did a few years ago on the Northeast Corridor. They replaced the AEM-7, and HHP-8, but have remained reliable since.

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 5 років тому +2

      @@MrGeforcerFX The SC-44 is based on a locomotive series named VECTRON.
      It is a modular system realized with the commitment of global use. This is not specifically German, all major locomotive builders have such a system in their porfolio: Bombardier with TRAXX, ALSTOM with PRIMA, SIEMENS with VECTRON. These systems all have in common that they can serve as the basis for various types of locomotives, eg the VECTRON is available as an electric locomotive, as a diesel-electric locomotive, as a dual-mode locomotive with LastMile device, VECTRONs run on normal gauge and on braud gauge.
      SC-44 and ACS-64 are both American and Americanized VECTRONs, built with in ISA (Sacramento) with mostly in USA manufactured parts.
      Something similar - in the sense of global universality - exists with GE's currently most successful American freight train diesel locomotive - the ES44. It is available for Indian broad gauge, as a Chinese locomotive, on a narrow gauge in Brazil and much more - the ES44 is a universally worldwide applicable product - like the corresponding locomotive systems of the major manufacturers too.

      @@SouthCalifas619
      "how generous of foreign companies to offer us jobs thatll benefit their economy"
      *lol*
      I dont know what your problem is.
      First of all, the construction of SC-44 and ACS-64 serves the American economy, because the locos are built in California, with parts mostly made in the USA.
      Siemens is an international company based in Germany. Bombardier too. Both sell their stuff on the international market. USA belongs to this market.
      GE also trades on the international market. And they work exactly the same as Siemens.
      Did you know that GE has signed a contract with the Indian Railways about building a version of the ES44 in India? It includes the construction of a factory there, so that the Indians can build the engines themselves. The contract runs over 1000 pieces in ten years - and 90% of them are to be built in India.
      Why are you not lamenting that GE harms the American economy, because basically they only earn a bit of license fees?
      Do you know who really harmed the American Economy and basically still does?
      The American locomotive manufacturers.
      For various reasons they do not want to build ordinary passenger locomotives and for decades they prefer to leave this business to others - and most of them come from abroad. Not even the latest passenger locomotive from EMD or Caterpillar, the F125, is a complete American locomotive: Concept of VOSSLOH from Spain, the bogies too, the generator is AFAIK Japanese.
      And GE? GE has nothing to offer.
      What should rail operators do which need to organize passenger services? The US-American manufacturers do not do anything or not to the specifications required by AMTRAK and Co. So these passenger train companies have no choice but to damage the American economy and buy abroad.
      And that has been like this for a long time:
      The HHP-8: ALSTOM and Bombardier.
      AEM-7, AEM-7AC, ALP-44: ASEA, ALSTOM.
      ACS-64, SC-44: SIEMENS
      F125: VOSSLOH, KATO
      Thats all. Thank you

    • @railfan8895
      @railfan8895 5 років тому +2

      SouthCalifas619 American assembled in Sacramento, California with a global mix of parts. Engines from Cummins that are assembled in Seymour, Indiana out of primarily Chinese parts. Alternator s made by Hitzinger in Austria. Most of the other smaller parts are from Germany. The body shells are made entirely in Sacramento.
      The initial multi-state order of Amtrak replacements was funded by the Obama stimulus bill. Siemens has a big sign in front of their facility explaining that.
      So in other words, it stimulates A LOT of economies, not just Germany’s. I know that the workers in Sacramento are very greatful for the employment opportunities offered by this project.

    During the nine years I'd lived in Fresno, when I'd come up to Sacramento to see family and friends, I'd pass the Siemens plant on the UP line, with that being my first indications I was in Sacramento proper. I haven't been through there since they started production of the ACS-64 and SC-44, but I've seen a few of them come through my hometown of North Highlands, being towed by UP locos. Saw some MARC SC-44s and some SEPTA ACS-64s being towed on their way east, but couldn't get pics in time.

    Hey Mike, in early 2018, Metra collaborated with Amtrak to use Cascades and Surfliner F59's as a replacement for their older F40's. The F59 fleet will continue to be used for Metra commuter service following their retirement from Amtrak. The first 5 will keep their original Surfliner paint scheme, the next 16 will get their new Metra paint scheme. These locos will reduce pollution on Metra commuter service. F59's are still used on service for Amtrak San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor. I know it's unpleasant to see them leave, but it will reduce polution as they enter Metra service. By the way, before making their way over to Metra, the F59PHI's got their mechanical bells replaced with E-bells. They were used on the Surfline between 1998 and 2018. Now the SC-44 will take over for the next 20 years.

    Do you have any ideas on why some chargers have the blue "swoosh" on the rear and others don't?

    • @thomaspalmer1019
      @thomaspalmer1019 5 років тому +3

      Units 2111-2122 have them. Only units 2109 and 2110 don't. The thought on the reason is that they plan to use 2109 and 10 only on the Amfleet (low-level) sets and the rest on the bi-level sets when all are ready for service, so they have colours to match their trains.

    • @CoasterFan2105
      @CoasterFan2105  5 років тому +1

      The reason the 2109 and the 2110 are missing the "blue swoosh" is that they were completed before the final scheme was chosen. So, the white pinstripe was added to match the cars as best they could.

    3:01 nice catch of three Chargers on one train!
    the lead locomotive at 4:02 doesn't have the blue paint on the back! That's the part that makes it fit with its surfliner passenger cars (I think Amtrak should order some more so they don't have the non-matching superliners in the middle!)
    4:47 nice catch of two NPCUs at the back! One of them being 90208!

  • @railfanryan2309

    0:31 I just noticed that the Chargers fit well with the surfliner cars. That is because the part that goes up at the back of the Chargers matches the height with the coaches.

    I prefer the look of the Genesis locomotive much more. I wish they made a Charger in a Genesis body, that would be a perfect locomotive, because the Charger looks like a toy compared to the beautiful beast of a locomotive Genesis. In about 10 years we probably won't see Genesis locomotives anymore.

      Thomas is correct. The locomotives need to be qualified a total of 500 miles of trouble free running before they are allowed to go solo. Some of the trains also had locomotives on both ends so that more crews could be qualified to operate the Chargers in service.

    That spoiler(?) on the tail of the charger was obviously designed to make them more aerodynamic in combination with the Surfliner coaches, but it makes things worse when one of these locomotives is in front of a single-level coach or another locomotive (including another Charger when they are running tandem instead of back-to-back) -- and this seems to be the case an awful lot of the time. They should have made the spoiler be something that could be raised and lowered, or at least removed quickly. Fortunately, although all of the ones in this video have this feature, not all Chargers (not even all of the ones used by Amtrak) have it (although I'm not sure that Amtrak actually owns the ones used on the Cascades -- at least some of them have the WSDOT logo on them instead of Amtrak).
