  • This one is a little painful. I could have saved myself some of the pain by using a magnifying glass (or similar!) and checking the chips but watch as this all unfolds!
    No chapters on this one as it is what it is but at least I know what the fault is and the rest of the machine looks good so maybe one day it can run again (let me know if you have some half-decent heads!).
    Thanks for watching and it'd be great if you'd subscribe too.

    My first port of call is the microscope in these cases. At least removing the head drum is easy enough on these machines. Remember the bad old days of having to reset eccentricity on a SL-C7?

      I do. I was really good at it for some reason!

      Absolutely and I do the same thing although I check with the upper drum on first as a lot of damage can be seen by just looking at the chip. I blimey yes, I used to work near a Toshiba dealer and the Toshiba Betamax machine models all needed head eccentricity setup. I was much younger then and seemed to be able to set them up by eye really well and then use the gauge for the last 'tweak' - a skill I seem to lack these days! The joys of first gen betamax machines - happy days!

      Me too - used to set them up by eye and then use the gauge for the final tweak.

    I had the exact same model sent to me from a guy to sort, who cleaned it out with an air line!! When i looked at it one head chip was completely gone! Luckily i had a good used set to replace it with. The pinch roller was also rock hard (something that never happens with Sanyo pinch rollers).
    He also had it cited near a fire .I told him that was'nt a great idea.

      Oh wow - a blown off head-chip - that's crazy! Very seldom see rock-hard pinch rollers in Sony's to be fair and they do rejuvenate well as long as the bearings are good.

    I had to do the same with my Sony C7. The Heads had worn out, and I was getting a Frosty Picture. Couldn't get replacements for love of money. Real shame, loved that Machine. It's the name of the game with old kit like this. I need a Stylus for my Toshiba CED player now.

      That must be an epic search to find a stylus for a CED? It's amazing how many head disks for C7's have emerged in recent years - just a shame they soon got deleted from the spares catalogues back in the day.

      They are a great machine when they've been looked after.

    I don’t get it, when I done vcrs years ago I would check the head under a microscope and also test the head’s inductance. Don’t you have a tester for heads?.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  Рік тому

      There was so much cotton bad fluff around the chip I couldn't see the end of the chip to check so had to soak them first. I do have a rather rubbish head test meter which is now working again (rotary switch was dodgy) and would have checked with that and saved me some time!

    The first thing I would do, is look almost vertically down, to see if the Heads are still recognizable when turning by Hand.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  Рік тому +1

      That's what I would normally do but it was fun to keep the faith and hope they were OK - having all that fluff around the head chip disguised it's true damage though...

      You are so right - heads are non-existent for the HF100. It's a little surprising as they were popular machines in some markets but it'll make a great parts machine.

    hi have a new head drum for my betacam sp 1800 only 25 hrs on it
    it's a real pain when you get like this have to work out wear to use
    funny thing in a BETACAM digi i pick up there was a working input card
    the one that is hard to find like a car you can pay for a add on things
    in the betacam digi A500 there a missing card i came in to one
    i have 11 DIGI decks it's the first time i seen one ever EP-GW been looking for one
    for a very long time the deck works well
    it's ups and down's with beta decks lose and wins all the time
    i got a fee one from somebody the deck was bad
    i was after the head drum and part the power unit killed alot of parts all over the deck
    big time i had this with betamax i mate had 11 sanyo 5000 decks
    i said j there's alot of bad caps in alot of them
    on the main pcb the tec free's were mind blowing j is not with us any more
    he moved away down south
    bad as a mate coming over i say it bad caps here and here cap you see them pop there
    tops

      @MrBetaByte  Рік тому

      It really is ups and downs with these decks and it can be really saddening when parts are very low hours or new old stock but just don't perform too. Caps are always fun!

    do a search on ebay for DSR-35R. for SL-HF100, there are two left outa Jordan. unbelievable, I would buy em both.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much for this but Euro Betamax machines need the additional AFM heads so the head disk I need is a DSR-38R. The DSR-35R would only be good for machines like the C20/30/40 etc in Europe. I still might get a set though!

      @@betamaxrebeloutpost8945 This is a special Feature of Betamax that the faster (60 Hz) rotating Video Heads can also record the HiFi sound. 50 Hz SONY Betamax devices have 2 extra Transformers on the Top for the HiFi Sound. The first Panasonic HiFi Video Recorder also had 2 extra Transformers at the Top.

    What a total amateur. No idea what he’s doing. No scope, no alignment tools, no idea.
