It is insane the amount of disassembly required to get to those back 3 plugs. Thanks for the step by step tutorial!! I'm going to do this in the garage for my wife's explorer tomorrow morning. I'm Sure that you just saved me 1,000 bucks.
Now get a cherry picker remove the engine from the transmission. Don’t forget the drive shaft. Install the spark plugs and then throw the car away. This is ridiculous for spark plugs!
Looked at a dozen videos for this process, and this was by far the best one.. and ONLY one I found with torque and torque sequence details. Bravo 1A Auto.. you're my 1st stop from now on.
For those thinking this is too tough.. my 14 yr old daughter did most of the work - in her 1st spark plug replacement.
Got to love when engineers say, oh we don't need to make it easy to change, they should be bringing it into the dealership and spending $800 to get 6 plugs changed.
now is 1,000.00 dollar plus tax I went Lincoln ford that was the news say no thank
Excellent tutorial. I will likely buy parts from A1 Auto in the future, because the quality of their content is so thorough, I want to help them continue to produce videos like this. Everything was spot on, even the list of required tools, which helped save time. The whole process took me 2.5 hrs. That includes finding my tools, watching and pausing the video, cleaning surfaces, and occasionally petting the dogs.
Awesome video. Thanks for your time posting this. I just changed all 6 plugs in a 2016 explorer in 1 hour 45 minutes. Just saved lots of $$$$$$
All this just to change spark plugs! Unbelievable! Thank you for this video! Easy to follow and very thorough!

Best video on the subject! Follow every step and you'll be fine! Just did mine in about 2 hours!
Just did this. Followed the instructions and had no problems. Just do what he says and you'll be safe. Excellent video, well done.
Great video! It’s given me the courage to do it myself. The manual states that you have to remove the intake manifold to get to the PCV valve so; you may as well change that out while it’s off. Shame on Ford for making us have to go through so many hoops just to change out spark plugs. 😡
I had a 13 Taurus with the 3.5 . Mild auto mechanic experience meaning I change oil filter brakes myself and I pulled the intake and changed the plugs in about 2 hours. It was much easier than it seems, hardest part was just making sure you dont break and of the plastic parts and the bolts go to the right location
Go watch the same video on the 4Runner if you think this is somehow unique to Ford.
All modern engine compartments are like this unfortunately, but if you want all that power, gas mileage, fancy electronics under a small-medium sized aerodynamic front end then this is what we get!
My 2001 Toyota Highlander Limited with the 3.0L V6 was exactly the same, except really rusty. Lol That was a job and a half! My 2015 Explorer Limited is actually easier to perform the same job on, at least.
These video's that you record for us. Are AWESOME! Step by step tool sizes needed, torque ratings and order in which to complete the task most efficiently. Bought the spark plugs and then looked inn the engine bay, front 3 no problem, ones in the back had me scratching my head until I found your video. Cannot thank you enough I will need some more parts in the near future and 1A auto will be getting my business.
Thank you!!
I've done minor car repair work, but was intimidated when I realized how many hoses/pieces of equipment had to be removed to GET to my spark plugs. I really wanted to avoid the $500 bill, estimated by the car dealership. I can't imagine how your video could be improved. Andy was well organized and very easy to understand. The photography was excellent and all explanations were spot ON! I would not have been able to accomplish the job without your help/video. Thanks so much for your help! I will be referring everyone I know to your website!😀
Damn Ford, I thought the spin in brake calipers were shitty, but the plugs steal the show. Thanks for making a day out of changing the plugs.
Just changed out the plugs and coil packs on the wife's Explorer and it was far easier and quicker than I expected. Thanks to your video.
Outstanding video! Just followed this as if you were here with me. 2013 Explorer and perfectly done! Great job.
Best video ever, A1Auto customer for life now, thank you. First time took me about 3 hrs and next time maybe should be only half as long. Consider these optional steps: buying ahead of time a throttle body gasket as mentioned in video, buying extra boots and seals for the coils ($7ea) and replacing some of these if look damaged, wiping these same rubber parts on the coil with a rubber treatment such as silicone etc, having two different low profile torque wrenches to speed things up, adding some anti seize to the spark plug threads but avoiding the first few threads, using compressed air to blow dust and debris out of the recess, and gapping the plugs before you start (they come gapped). Minor: the mass airflow sensor on my 2017 Limited 3.5L is mounted on the intake manifold housing so be sure to unplug that before removing. I think it’s important to use a universal joint so any alignment errors don’t break the plug off: ratchet, 6” extension, universal, 5/8” plug fitting, assembled in this order.
Great video. The step by step instructions are spot on. You took an intimidating job and made it easy.
worked great. Never had a the intake manifold off or the throttle body on any car but keeping everything clean and organized, I was done in 2 hours. Hate plastic clip connectors though - always prone to be brittle and breakage, be careful with those minor but important things. Thank you!
+Doug Barker Thanks for checking us out and providing your experience! We are glad that this video assisted you. 1AAuto.com
Ahhh for the days when all you needed was a sparkplug socket, ratchet and 10 minutes tops to change all the sparkplugs. Now engine disassembly is required...amazing! Thanks for the video...I need to do this job and am glad someone showed me how! I'm sure it'll save me several hundred dollars.
Great video. Good instructions. Completed the job in about 2 hours.
Just did this to my wife’s car and you helped me through it. Thanks
Just wanted to thank you so much for this instructional video. Did this job myself and with this video I felt really confident in taking upon this task. Save lots of $$$$$ doing it myself. Everything worked great. Thank you once again.
Did you replace the gaskets on the intake manifold or throttle body?
I just completed this and saved myself $700. Thank you!
Excellent video, I was little
Nervous to try this on my own but with this video you covered every possible step with great camera work, thanks!
One thing I’ll add is replacing my PCV valve while you have the plenum removed it was so easy to access..
Just did it myself for 35 bucks thanks to this video. If took well over 1.5 hrs but it's done now.
Thank you for the video, as an amateur diy guy, I was happily got the job done
Makes me wonder if a spark plug change was ever discussed by Ford at the drawing table lol. Great video. You guys always deliver the best videos, keep doing what you're doing. I just subscribed!
Very helpful, definitely referring to this channel for anything I needa do
Excellent video, covers the work well. Thanks!
Good time to change air filter, spray clean maf sensor, and throttle body.....
Excellent video. I did this last night using this video. However, I made a mistake apparently. The engine is running super rough and is now spitting out 5 codes, 203, 204, 300, 304, 305 I believe. I am going to get some WD_40 and check for vacuum leaks or if I missed something while tightening down and also I bought my plugs but never checked the gap. So...even though you gave us a perfect video, I was still able to mess it up. GREAT video though. Really helped a ton, i just don't pay attention.

@@hunterrodriguez752 Replace the intake manifold rubber seals. They never mentioned that. Never take that intake off without spending the $10 for the intake seal. Will save your ass every time. I don't know about his but every time I don't, I get vac leaks. so I stopped doing tune up's without getting them first.
@@twportre8809 did you replace the gasket for the throttle body as well?
Yep, like everyone else is saying, great video. Well done. Straightforward and finally someone who doesn't annoy the s*** out of me. Thank you!
My ‘15 Explorer is still on its original plugs with 140k on them.
The dealership just suggested I replace em but wanted $375!!
I said no way Jose
I’ll watch a UA-cam video and do it myself
Great video!
Thanks for the video i will definitely wait as long as possible to do this job
Note: if you have the turbocharged 3.5L V6, the lay out is a little different obviously. But in my opinion a lot easier
Only thing worth taking off is the air box (though this may not be necessary either) and all of the connectors/sensors that goes with it and the quick disconnect line that run across the first three ignition coils. You should be able to work around the coolant line in the front that partially cover the middle coil as well as the lines for the back three.
Engine cover does not have a retainer clip, just push clips
And as always, dont forget antiseize for the plugs and dielectric grease for the coils for easier replacement next time
2015 Ford Explorer Sport
Question about your comment…when you say the air box is the only thing worth removing, do you mean the intake manifold? I have a 2014 sport, and having a hard time confirming the gaskets I’ll need if I pull the intake off.
Great video! I definitely got the idea of making sure to be gentle. It's not that this is hard to change them, but a ridiculous amount of steps to do it. With the challenge of not puncturing or cracking any other bits in the process. I better not do this when my kids around because i guarantee pieces will come up missing!
Do you not have to install new gaskets?
This is a great video, thank you. Do you have video on exhaust replacements for the explorer as well?
Excellent video. I think I’ll just take to my mechanic. I remember my 1987 truck had direct access to spark plugs. Now you need to disassemble half the engine.
I guess along with this video son and I can do this job on his truck same truck, but I would have replaced pcv valve & air filter, cleaned throttle body and MAF. But great video! Thnx!
Facts 💯 I would have waited on the pcv valve but the other 2 yep.also would have replaced the coil packs if u hadn't changed then in a while.
Thanks for this video! Ford wants over $500 to do this. I will save a ton! Awesome!
I bought my parts online sill proceed with this job as well changing oxygen sensors ya really fo explain how to do things and really appreciate the details on doing this on personal vehicles
Great detailed video!!! Thank you!!
I want to say thank you for such a great video it helped me out tremendously!!!
Call me OCD but I remove and install one t a time. I also mark the box that comes with the new plugs with the cylinder I am removing. #1-6 etc. I put the old plug in that box to use as a reference for how each plug and cylinder is wearing. I can see pretty quickly if plugs have even wear or if there is a problem with any one cylinder and now what cylinder the problem plug came from if any. I can insert the d plug in the box and review later. Again partial OCD but good reference. I have even gone so far as to label the coil packs with each cylinder number as in #1-6 for easy reference later..
+Stephen Cannon That is a great way to number each one and keep great track. The more detailed, the better!
Do you have to replace the intake manifold gasket?
No mention of replacing the manifold gasket. That is highly recommended, extremely cheap, and future proofing!!
Another Great video Thanks, just did My front control arms yesterday, with your video help. What camera do You use for videos ?
Great video guys I am going to do the spark plugs soon on this
If you own a similar year Ford Edge 6cyl its basically the same idea in a smaller area. Don't forget to add a little dielectric grease at the end of coil boots
Curious if you recommend changing the gaskets and if you can link to the correct set for a 2015? Also I'm kind of surprised that the tech didn't clean the loose sand/dirt from the top of the intake. Seems like a good idea to at least blow the dirt out before any disassembly.
Make sure you folks buy you intake gasket + throtle body gasket -its $8 total - dont cheap out or take short cuts.
Great job
Bought 2011 for a cheap prize 146mls on it,this car was leaking oil by the ignition coils, and didn’t know wat to do.by seeing this video I think I can manage to do it 😎 Thnks for saving my money for taking to the dealer 😁
+Jhonny AKIRA Thank you! We love empowering our customers and showing how to perform DIY auto repairs with our high-quality auto parts. 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Blow all the sand or dirt off before you take the oil cap off so dirt don’t fall in the oil hole or spark plug holes. Otherwise great video
Very good and very professional video
Thanks so much for this video
There are several types of Spark Plugs, such as (iridum and platinum) what kind you used here ?
Fantastic video A+ all you need to know for the job in detail
On my 2013 there is a bolt attached to a bracket on the underside of the intake on the driver's side......the intake cannot be removed without taking this bolt out. Maybe that is a year over year change to the process. Other than that, great video!
All of that..... for 3 dang spark plugs...... -_-
I appreciate all your videos, however, I have used them from brakes (front AND rear) to this spark plug video! Very informative, and I greatly appreciate that you state the proper torque settings needed for various jobs.
Can you re-use the Intake manifold gaskets or do you have to replace them?
Good video and detailed. Does 1A Auto sell the Intake Manifold Gasket and mounting bolts? Are the Intake Manifold mounting bolts Torque to Yield like Head Bolts and need to be replaced each time?
Can I use extensions instead of that special spark plug tool? Great video.
An excellent video with a question, how much is the torque of the spark plug, at the nanometer scale... I hope for a quick response, even if the same responses
Excellent! Very nicely done video.
Great video 📷📸😅😊
Thanks for uploading this video.
Thank you for this video seriously! I didn’t do the coils but now I’m thinking I probably should have since it was all apart. I had to do the evap/pcv and Ford said i was due for a tuneup in 2,000 miles so I just did it all at once. They wanted $500 just for spark plugs, not including coils! 😱 My 1994 is waaaayyy easier than this new stuff.
please reply me , i have ford explorer 2012 base model, i have replaced its origin engine 3.5 l to 3.7 engine 2017, is there any problem with it? or differentiate their parts? sorry for my broken English
Excellent video .. thank you so much
what a pain. Transverse engines are such a dumb idea
Huge help, thank you. I ran the code I got and it said I had a 2nd cylinder misfire. I changed all the plugs and the coil for the cylinder 2. Sadly I still have a check engine light on. Any thoughts? Also I feel like the steering is tighter. Not sure it’s related. 2016 explorer limited. I’ll take any suggestions.
Am changing mine today so thanks
You saved me about $300 on a plug/igniter replacement at the Ford dealer.

Great video. Just did this like 10 min ago. What a pain
Replace both intake gaskets is recommended. If not you could start throwing codes small price to avoid do over.
Do you have to replace the gaskets?
I accidently stripped intake manifold bolt. But the rest are tight. Will it be ok?
Great video? Do you sell any Motorcraft OEM parts or any quality USA made replacement, or just the cheapest Chinese stuff?

Thanks for the video. Dude they are making these car so we can't work on them drunk . 🤣
hi friend, thanks for your video, I want to know what calibration the spark plugs have.
Thanks
Are you talking about the gap of the spark plug [space between the electrode & the bridge? You can sometimes find this on the under hood engine decal or just look it up, normally approx. .054-.065" but check for new bulletins before.
Did anyone else notice the difference in valve cover when the camera angle changed(right after removing the first coil pack)? It went from super dirty to brand new. Makes me wonder if it is the same car and if anything went wrong on the first video shoot? Like stripped plug hole. Maybe just really good at localized cleaning?
I noticed I think he skipped the new intake gasket 1st time then he got engine codes had to do it over.
Great video because it shows the reverse - how to put everything back! Just one question - is this the same procedure for my 2013 Ford Edge FWD? Thanks.
+Puneet It may be a different procedure on your application. We currently do not have an auto repair video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking. 1aauto.com
Hi I am looking for 06 Ford Explorer driver seat please let me know if I can buy from you guys
Okay to reuse TB and plenum gaskets?
No anti-seize on the spark plug threads?
I put anti-seize on my 15 exp; but I have seen vids and read forums on Bosch, Denso, and ngk spark plugs not needing any plus have a higher quality and life than standard motor craft; which are not bad at all just a different service interval and performance.
The automotive industry has destroyed what use to be a simple process...
What’s the labor time on this job
Wow. This is a insane amount of labor for just changing plugs. Great video but holy sh**!!
The 2014 Sport isn't like this, thankfully. All 6 are accessible without removing anything aside from the plastic engine cover.
I was hoping to not have to remove the intake plenum but sounds like no choice for rear plugs. I guess if you admit to yourself that the intake plenum has to be removed sounds like process will be a lot easier.

Why are you not putting any anti-seize on the spark plug threads? The next tech will hate you for that & the owner will not like it when the spark plug break or pulls the threads out of the head on the next tune up.
