    One hundred percent agree about premed and AP credits, I took calculus and stats but most med schools prefer the university level equivalents despite my school technically accepting my APs

    This video was really helpful but I have two questions 1) How difficult is it to balance extracurriculars (e.g. research or internships) with the rigorous premed course-load and how many extracurriculars would you recommend taking on? 2) is there a certain way premeds should be spending their summers like taking extra classes or doing research? Thanks for all your advice!

    • @MayGao
      @MayGao  6 років тому +8

      You learn and master time management in college. It's definitely doable to balance research and other cocurricular commitments with your courses. However, just because you CAN join 6 clubs doesn't mean you SHOULD. I personally believe prioritizing and committing to a handful of activities is better than spreading yourself too thin. That being said, explore your first year and apply to as many things you're interested in as possible, then narrow it down from there. Anuva and I will probably talk about how to spend summers in a coming video!

    So, I just recently became interested in pre med, but I’m about to be a senior in high school. I’m fairly concerned about the pre requisites since I’ve only taken chemistry and biology and I still lack organic chemistry as well as physics. My plan was to take anatomy and physiology as well as AP Environmental Science but I’m beginning to lean more towards Physics and AP Chemistry. I want to know what you both would recommend, as college students yourselves. Your video has been very helpful! Also I’ve always wondered what happens when you apply to college and your pre requisite classes are still in progress. Thanks so much!

    • @MayGao
      @MayGao  5 років тому

      Hey there! Feel free to send me an email. I will say that a very small number of students have taken organic chemistry in high school-it’s usually not offered and even if it is, the level of rigor is almost always not comparable to college orgo. Even if you have AP credit for chem, physics, or bio, you still have to take those classes in college. You might be able to use the credits to place out of lower level classes, but the required # of semesters of each science still stands. Hope this helped!

    This might be a strange question, but does it mean that you guys will graduate undergrad in 3 years instead of the traditional 4 years?

    • @MayGao
      @MayGao  6 років тому +10

      Check out the "Sample plans" link in the description. The 3-year plan means you take the MCAT in your junior spring semester and then apply for medical schools the summer before your senior year. This way, you will know your decisions in senior year and go directly to medical school without taking a gap year. The 4-year plan allows you to complete applications after your senior year. This is for people intending to take a gap year before going to medical school. Hope this cleared things up!

    Do you recommend skipping out of the intro bio class at brown? I am able to get credit for it, but I took ap bio in junior year so I am a little rusty on bio. Will my rusty knowledge of bio hinder my performance in upper div bio classes or future pre med required classes?

    • @MayGao
      @MayGao  5 років тому +1

      I personally used my AP credit. Taking BIOL 0200 would be redundant. Classes like physiology don’t really demand extensive AP bio knowledge and you’ll probably pick it up quickly. That being said, a solid foundation in bio definitely makes upper levels a lot easier. Check out the syllabus/textbooks if you’re still unsure and shop the classes. You can accept your AP credits up until you graduate so no rush to do it now!

      It could be different based on different colleges, but at my school pre-med isn't a major but a distinction on your transcript. As long as you can get into your college of choice, anyone can be premed regardless of highschool coursework. That being said, some competitive colleges do like to see AP coursework and it can help you get out of some of the difficult beginner courses like calculus or chemistry.

    Why is a gap year considered for 4 year instead of 3 year?

    • @MayGao
      @MayGao  3 роки тому

      Assuming you plan on taking the MCAT after finishing your course requirements, the basic pre-med course requirements should be finished in 2-3 years instead of 4 if you want to apply without a gap year. Some students will finish their reqs in two years and take their MCAT the summer after sophomore year to apply straight in. You could also take your last reqs in your junior year and take the MCAT in the spring, but that leaves less time for a possible retake (if no gap year). Personally, I took the MCAT the summer after my junior year and will be taking a gap year. Kind of confusing, but hope this clarifies things a little!
