There are ports in Panama that are operated by a company based in Hong-Kong, that won a bid to get the operating deal. Any company could have bidded to operate those ports. I was put in a proposal that a friend put together who knew an American who married a girl from Kenya. My friend told me hey we won the contract in Kenya. Be ready in 2 months. A few days later I was told the contract was pulled because china offer to fund the work if Kenya hired a Chinese contractor to do the work. That’s the truth. China won’t invade a country they will make loans to them that they know might be difficult for them to pay back. Then they will negotiate this and that using the large loan as leverage. That’s how china controls most of the major sea ports in the world.

There are ports in Panama that are operated by a company based in Hong-Kong, that won a bid to get the operating deal. Any company could have bidded to operate those ports. To underline I need to mention that these ports are not the canal - you can use the canal without using these ports and most do so.

I was in Panama several years ago before Covid. My wife and I stayed for about a month. I wanted to do some fishing and sightseeing. We rented a car and drove around the country. China definitely had a presence. Their buses were being used many of the shops were Chinese businesses . I commented on it back then. I’m kind of sensitive about china. I was put in a proposal that a friend put together who knew an American who married a girl from Kenya. My friend told me hey we won the contract in Kenya. Be ready in 2 months. A few days later I was told the contract was pulled because china offer to fund the work if Kenya hired a Chinese contractor to do the work. That’s the truth. China won’t invade a country they will make loans to them that they know might be difficult for them to pay back. Then they will negotiate this and that using the large loan as leverage. That’s how china controls most of the major sea ports in the world.

Something really needs to be done about the two ports China now has at either end of the Panama Canal, so I think that tariffs are a good way to bring the CCP to the table. But at the same tome lets not forget that during the Carter administration when the Canal was returned to Panama to control there were things involved that most Americans might not be aware of. As I sit here in Panama city writing this comment as a United States citizen visiting I plan to look more deeply into the agreement between the U.S. and Panama concerning the Canal before going any further.
