my tripalay game has ragdoll physics haha :) XPBD method for constraints.
(and haha i used euler rotations haha). using quaternions with current :)
so i've written all of the necessary ragdoll functions in c/c++, it's like 7 or 8 lines for a limb segment and a couple hundred lines to use the rotations to place points around the entire skeleton and make my meshes in game instead of using modeling software :p it's pretty easy, i haven't made a video about it yet but tbh i find people are more comfortable using an sdk like unity than trying to write it themselves, which i just see as much simpler. but yeah, my ragdoll physics game in a win32 app is like a 300kb zip file using procedure instead of files. unfortunately, no one likes talking about my game.

This has been my largest complaint for years. Convincing visuals mean nothing when your actions aren't provided with appropriate feedback. It matters on both an aesthetic, mechanical and just plain interfacing level.
A lot of modern AAA games have very sloppily tuned, weightless physics implementation with little actual physicality, whereas a lot of AA and indies have been showing out with surprisingly well considered and polished implementations.

I've noticed that mostly of the games you mentioned were shooters, i like to add to the list a fight game: Overgrowth. The graphic style are not really realist like those games, but the ragdolls are quite fun, kick someone and see them fly and hit a wall or something is really satisfacing.
Another genere that have mechanics and fun things with ragdolls are the sandbox, Garry's Mod is the purest example, but others like People Playground, Sumotori Dreams, Standbox and Teardown (this with "enviroment physics") are another great games with other kind of ragdolls, not completely related with the dead of the character but with the gameplay innit.

It blends animation and physics whenever you or an enemy dies and makes each ragdoll look so fluid and lifelike, and you can really feel the weight of your character as they slam down to the ground as they die. This is the most important topic that needs to be addressed more often. Growing up in the 90's, It really felt like the future of gaming was going to be awesome. Game's weren't just hyper focused graphics. They were focused on physics effects, art styles, a range of gameplay modes, gameplay mechanics, damage effects, environmental interaction, engaging AI to play against in single player mode, CPU bots in offline modes, just good AI in games campaigns. Current video games focus on graphical nitpicking. It seems they forgot how much players enjoyed physics effects & other aspects that make games fun. Quirky graphics can work, if a creative art style is used. Add engaging CPU AI, gameplay modes, the list goes on.. idk what happened?
    Also:
    {We have seen that even if companies delay games, it isn't improving the quality of games being released. Which is a sign there is a MUCH DEEPER issue going on with modern games. No excuses, devs used to make great games with much less and they would have given anything to have certain capabilities to utilize that are available today. It just takes actual passion, focus & talent to make great games. Sidenote: It's so crazy how many people are still supporting super mega rich companies putting out unacceptable products.. i don't understand certain people. I don't understand how certain companies can be messing up so badly. It's frustrating that other passionate people are not allowed to make a version of a type of game that we used to have but no longer get anymore.. Yet these huge companies get full control over if an unused game IP gets made & they do everything they can so no other versions of a game idea will ever come out. Even if there's a huge fan base around certain ideas and there's a ton of passionate devs out there dying to make a version of a certain video game idea.. that frustrates me beyond belief}

On the subject of active ragdolls, what can kind of ruin them for me is when they feel like they're being moved around by external forces to keep them moving and upright like puppets, as opposed to actually interacting with the world on their own realistically.
Best example I have of this is People Playground, where the ragdolls can stand upright and move when they're alive, but not because they have any sense of balance or environmental awareness. They don't push themselves up off the ground when they fall, they get pulled up by an invisible force. When they try to walk off a ledge, they can get stuck because the force keeping them upright makes them unable to fall and keeps one foot on the platform they're on, as if there's balloons tied to them. It kinda ruins my enjoyment of the game's physics because the humans are operating on brute force programming rather than working realistically.

Something I think messes up the fun of ragdolls is that games that generally use them also make a lot of use of headshots, which in turn drives the player's gameplay towards seeing one way to kill enemies, one direction to apply the force of a bullet, and generally turns out kind of boring. Let's take Max Payne 3 as an example: every video I see of people speaking of Max Payne 3 has one thing: slow-motion headshots. There's not a single Max Payne 3 video I've seen in which the player isn't doing slow-motion dives and carefully aiming at heads to fire a single shot and instantly kill the enemy. Is it effective? Of course, but is it fun? It's not even a Max Payne 3 issue, I played Max Payne 2 the exact same way and it honestly felt boring to be so efficient after a while.
One of the most memorable ragdoll moments I've seen was in Left 4 Dead 2, where I grabbed the dual pistols and unloaded them on an enemy that died probably 25 shots ago, but the animation department somehow accounted for me doing this absolutely cinematic kill on one of the hundreds of enemies they spread across the map. Why did this kill happen? Because I kept firing at the chest instead of just going for the head to conserve ammo. I think more games should incentivize the player to engage with all limbs of an enemy, which is something Binary Domain did extremely well through its robots and armor peeling system, where removing a head actually caused a specific effect on the enemy instead of outright killing them.
The Killing Floor games are ones I'd have loved to put on a ragdoll list because they all are about killing stuff, but the headshots also mess it up and it gets dull to kill things the same way over and over, which brings me to GTA 4 and 5: your shots actually interrupt enemies in most - if not all - places that get shot, which actually drives the player towards the goal of just killing the enemy instead of being ammo-efficient. The combat of GTA 5's multiplayer is sometimes so fucking merciless, that the player starts to understand why the ammo pool caps at 9999 and that they're meant to be firing first, no matter where. The result of that fuckery is that if you see any part of an enemy first, that's the part you're shooting at and that's the part that gets affected, which is birthed by the sheer terror of getting annihilated in 3 shots from an enemy's rifle. Is it balanced? Fuck no, I actually stopped playing in part because of how frustrating it was, but it made me dwell on every kill and take joy in seeing the kill hitmarker, so it's a sidegrade to GTA 4's amazing ragdolls to me.

Bethesda games draw tons of value from ragdolls and object physics. It adds so much depth and interactivity, and it's not even that great versions of each.
Ragdolls can absolutely be jank as hell and some weights not make much sense, but the ability to pick up NPCs and various creatures by their limbs or body, ability to manipulate them like genuine ragdolls, with each body part having it's own weight that makes it harder or easier to move the body, it's awesome.
The object physics are evidently much more simple, especially in skyrim or fo4 (they optimized the hell out of them in starfield. I had spawned about 10 thousand rolls of toilet paper and it was running at around 15fps with seemingly no glitchy physics as far as i could see.), but the fact that most items in the game world that you can pick up are movable objects helps with immersion a ton, and i don't throw that word around lightly.
One thing that BGS games lack is environmental interaction, severely. There's almost no objects you can break or objects you can move with your body outside of maybe some carts which is quite disappointing.
Naturally there are mods to make the ragdolls behave more sensibly and a mod that adds NPC and player collision to dead bodies which makes it possible to let's say stand on the corpses of dragons you just killed which is just amazing.
Banger video and i really hope Teardown is a big focus in the environmental side of physics, it's a must play imo even if it doesn't really have ragdolls to mess with without mods (though the upcoming updates will include the ability to play as characters which should have physics so)

I do agree that normal(flatscreen) games also deserve to have great physics in them and its a little silly that we've kinda gone backwards in this field with most games.

@@TummisYT Not even just that, the reaction when punching, using a chair you found, or a crowbar on a ragdoll and seeing it react in VR is so good, even better with FBT!
Speaking off, you might wanna look into Blade and Sorcery, uses a really good mix of Ragdolls and built in animations.
Btw, what was the process for the the Thumbnail, I have no idea how to make a good one, and uh, yours goes HARD.

@@borbzone9351 blade and sorcery clips are sick! I need to get VR some day. For the thumbnail, I use Procreate on my iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. Really just a layer for the background and then one above that for the guy falling. If you don’t have an iPad, I know that Krita is a good free alternative on PC

My personal favorite ragdolls or npc physics, or any physics at all is in Blade And Sorcery, since it feels less bouncy and soft. Bonelab/boneworks is great, don’t get me wrong, but I’d say b&s mechanics or physics are most of the time more lifelike and fun.

As a ragdoll physics fan, I love Skate 2 ragdolls, they're heavy and gelatinous.
Rainbow 6 Siege use to have great ragdolls too.

This is essentially why my favorite games are all physics based sandboxes.
Some of my favorite examples for these games are Garry’s Mod, Red Dead Redemption 2 (although this one doesn’t really count as a sandbox), and for a vr game where this is absolutely essential for a good and immersive game, Blade And Sorcery.
Physics can make a game absolutely amazing, and I feel like people don’t talk about the potential of it, especially in vr or a more immersive technology where it makes it better.

The LandFall game devs are really good with physics, some games even becoming popular solely because of how entertaining the physics are. Some examples would be TABS, Rounds, and some of their other projects.

If you want to try something I personally think has some of the best ragdolls, I would suggest half sword. It only has a demo right now but I feel like it does the exanima concept a bit better where you can stumble and fall but it's much more fair about it (for the most part)

Have you seen any videos of the active ragdoll in Boneworks? Or Blade and Sorcery? VR is niche right now but active ragdoll has never been more suited to when you have control of each hand and can make contact with an NPC

16:35 I disagree, they shouldn't change Bodycam to be like other FPS games. A lot of modern military shooters look and play the same because people want the same mechanics out of it.
I feel that if you want Bodycam with those twists, it is best to make your own.
