-Brandon Sanderson 2024
Understatement of the year.
A threat, or a promise……
lmfao the audacity of this man
Sanderson’s inner thoughts while writing. This is all. Repeated over and over in his mind
He writes, we read. Good deal.
Elantris x2
Warbreaker x3
Mistborn Era 1
Mistborn Era 2
Mistborn Era 1 again
The Great Gatsby
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Harry Potter books 7 and 2
Warbreaker again x2
Watch every Brandon Sanderson lecture at 2x speed
Read Alloy of Law while you are listening to the audiobook for Oathbringer
(I hope I remembered the forbidden reading order right lol)
You also got to repeat the cycle twice to really understand the whole story
Actually laughed out loud at this, the hell 😂
A fellow man carrying thing fan
I see you're a man carrying a thing
this is the one
Okay, you twisted my arm. I'll reread all of them again...
I dove straight in with Way of Kings. I'll let you know how it was when I finish...probably when I'm 80
Hey, me too!
I caught up after a few years, but this was nearly a decade ago so…good luck! Haha
You mean to tell me you won't inhale the way of kings in like 2-3 weeks? Huh weird...
I started with the Stormlight Archive too. They're big books but they're my favorites. Mistborn and the smaller stand alone books are all good too
It took me 5 months, finished a few days ago and it really was that good. I was blown away, incredible book
I'm a slow reader but the audiobooks are excellent and it actually got me through a lot of the cosmere.
I went Stormlight up to Rhythm of War as it wasn't out yet. Then, the Mistborn trilogy. Then Elantris, and on to Wax and Wayne but not The Lost Metal because I don't think it was out yet. Then Warbreaker. Then some of the short stories. Oh! Also Edgedancer is in there somewhere.
However, your work on The Wheel of Time was my introduction to you. I was not a reader before all this. Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson are who I credit for opening me up to reading. Thanks, Brandon!
OMG my journey is exactly same as yours 😮 Way of Kings was sooo good that I wanted to read all of his books after.
It made the end of The Mistborn incredibly epic. We went the best route, obviously ;]
@SemaMehemmedli Seriously, The Way of Kings is amazing. Even the title was so good that Brandon used it twice. Just saying The Way of Kings can make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Same! I learned about Brandon Sanderson while finishing the Wheel of Time series. I went on to Way of Kings and was absolutely hooked!
How long did it take you to get through the Wheel of Time series and did you read it straight through?
I'm currently rereading all of the stormlight archive in preparation for Knights of Wind and Truth. It's a commitment but I've done it for each new book 📖 worth it every time.
I loved Tress of the Emerald sea!!
Way of Kings was my first book of yours I read and I think it was fine to read first. I get reading Mistborn first but for me personally Way of Kings was so epic it made me realize Stormlight was something truly special and not just another epic fantasy series.
I am so in love with the storm light archive. It is one of my favorite things ever.
I just started Mistborn 1. Never read Sanderson before but have wanted to for years! I’m listening to it on audio while I’m training for a 100 mile bike race. It’s making my long rides so much more enjoyable. And listening to big 3+ hour chunks is fun because the story moves pretty quick considering how long it is
It's been two months-
I hope your race went well!
How did you like Mistborn? Did you keep going in the Cosmere?
Just barely started looking into fantasy/epic fantasy books, I’ve always enjoyed reading but never even thought about fantasy for some reason💀😭I’m excited about this side of reading ! 😤
Thanks Brandon, Ive just purchased Tress of the Emerald Sea and looking forward to learning more about your writing style :)
I'm in my 40s with adhd. I finally managed it back in 2017 and can actually finish books now. I'm still so new ro this genre since all I've read in fantasy was the Dark Tower series, if that even is fantasy. I read a lot scifi after I finished the series and I'm only now getting back into fantasy. Currently reading Promise of Blood, but picked up Mistborn on a whim a couple days ago and plan on reading it next. Thanks for the list. I'll be reading these for a long time. I'm not a fast reader.
Well? How did you like Mistborn? 😊
@@asmonet I'm still reading it. I'm not a fast reader lol. Was a little confusing at the start for me but then something clicked and I got into it. The magic is cool (I don't think a video game can handle all of it, but I see myself using the push pull in a video game.) Anyway I'm at the point where they visit the caves and you see the army training. Spoilers I guess, Ham and Vin are heading to the Garrison after that. Vin is finally getting some action after playing Val for so long. I enjoyed it so far and it's starting to feel like, damn it this story is not gonna end soon, there isn't enough book left.
Started with Elantris, will start following the rest of this recommendation from Sanderson. Really enjoying Elantris, I have to force myself to put it down to keep a healthy pace.
Loving Sanderson in the year 2024. Started with mistborn and blew through the whole trilogy. Then i went straignt into stormlight. Got about halfway thru Rhythm of War. Theyre all so good but finally hit a bit of a wall.
Taking a break with a nice lil series called Wheel of time. Halfway thru book 4 of that and then going to circle back and either start stormlight over once book 5 comes out or maybe just start at book 4 again.
Going to need to get to warbreaker here at some point.
Woops! I started with Way of Kings and am almost finished with Words of Radiance
If there's one critique I have to Brandon Sanderson is changing one of the most epic book titles of all time *THE FINAL EMPIRE*
This is literally how I read the story and it’s amazing he is the best writer in our time right now
Personally, I read all three of the first Mistborn trilogy and loved them. Took a break to read other stuff after. Buddy from college started raving about Stormlight. Have read all four but it takes me months to read each one 😂
Warbreaker is one of my all time favorites!!!!!❤❤❤
I started with Elantris 20 years ago but didn't read anything until White Sands and went all in on Stormlight audio
It's quite funny to hear that, knowing how I first discovered Cosmere at like 14 years old with The Way of Kings, after which I waited for sequel xD
The fact that you became my favorite author right after I ignored every single advice to read mistborn first and read the entire Alcatraz series in a month 😂 I always recommend people start with it first now!
I think I have decided to read Brando Sandos books next and review them. It's been so hard to decided what to read next but admittedly I have been subbed to this page on my private account for years, ever since I found the creagive writing lectures. But I still haven't read any books. I love twists in stories and I saw a post that said you are probably the best at that! Considering I am reading Red Rising atm (some of the craziest twists I have ever read) I am very excited to read and review these books!. I'll be following the recommended reading order here.
Recently finished Red Rising 6, how do you like them?
@@nick-kqi I have the reviews on my channel for each book. But I would say that it's easily the mist entertaining series that I have read. I have issues with it, but I tend to overlook some of those because the story is just so damn fun 😂
Stormlight is indeed best read with breaks, at least in my opinion as well. I have a far easier time connecting with a series if I give it some breathing room
I started with Warbreaker and then jumped straight into the Stormlight Archive. Warbreaker is a good book but no where near as epic as the Stormlight Archive but Lightsong is such a good character that he remains one of my favorite characters.
Mistborn new paperback looks awesome
I read the first mistborn trilogy first, and while that is probably good advice in general, it didn't make me super eager to read more Sanderson. They were fun books that I enjoyed enough to read all the way through multiple times, but they didn't "speak" to me much. I assumed that that was the writer Sanderson was. I'd watched and loved his lecture series, but I assumed that his style just wasn't precisely for me. Then I read The Way of Kings. I read it precisely when I needed to. To this day, I've never been more affected by a book or series, or any media for that matter. Kaladin in particular is a character that I can genuinely say, with no exaggeration, changed my approach to life. Not through any profound or complex argumentation, but by example. Stormlight is a daunting series, but if you're not bothered by the relatively slow pace and gargantuan length, the payoff is more than worth the time.
I've been reading straight through Storm light 😅 but it has me kind ahyped for the others cause i tell there's worlds beyond
I started with the first mistborn trilogy and I have no regrets, I LOVE.
And then here I am jumping straight into Way of Kings and loving it.
Bruh I need to just start reading In general 😂
Meanwhile the first Cosmere book I picked up was The Way of Kings 😂 Absolutely loving it, though
The only books of yours I have read have been stormlight. Love them! I’m finishing up rhythm of war right now.
Probably do Mistborn next
Personally, I read the Stormlight Archive tomes, 1 - 4, straight through and, now, I'm going to reread them.
I read mistborn and went straight to the storm light archive.
I started with storm light. Best book ever
I'm pretty sure that Brandon Sanderson writes faster than I read, the 2010s really beat my brain into mush
I went straight for the storm light archive, which is a lot let’s be honest 😂
I think people get overwhelmed by where to start. I’d say pick up any book of his and read it instead of holding it off.
Haha this is funny! I love Brendan but his reading order kills me 😂 Have to google all the time 😂
I'm the maniac who started with Elantris and still feels that it is a good introduction because 1) It's much more the traditional fantasy story that people are used to, which makes it easier to get into, and 2) Being fairly isolated from the rest of the cosmere means there aren't sprinklings of the other worlds in it like we see in Stormlight, Mistborn era 2, or even Tress. We do, however, see bits of Elantris sprinkled in the other series so a reader can pick up on those tidbits later on.
My reasons against it are 1) It's not the strongest written piece, as it's one of the earliest, and 2) being more traditional might be a turn off to those looking to get away from that kind of story.
My reading order:
Stormlight 1&2
Warbreaker
Stormlight 3
Edgedancer
Mistborn 1
Half of Mistborn 2
Dawnshard
Stormlight 4
Nothing for at least year
Mistborn 2&3
W&W 1
half of W&W2
SP1&2
W&W 2&3
Arcanum Unbounded
SP3&4
Elantris
With the Audiobooks I finished Stormlight 1-4 in like a couple months lmfao
I laughed WAY TOO FUCKING HARD when you said “EW POOPIE”
Lol so don’t start with The Sunlit Man like I did? Got it 😅
I don’t know why you push tress so early but it definitely should be after you know who hoid is and what an elantrian is… otherwise you don’t understand what’s happening and you spoil elantris
Teacher: “Okay, class, remember you have an essay due Friday. Needs to be 1,500 words.”
Brandon: “Can we-“
Teacher: “No.”
Brandon: “What if-“
Teacher: “No.”
Brandon: “But I-“
Teacher: “NO”
Jokes on you, Elantris is no longer going to be a standalone. Just a playful jab. Can’t wait to read through all the these and the future books. Mistborn trilogy is one of the best things I’ve ever read. Truly, a great fan.
Which of his books has the best prose?
Personally, I don't understand reading tress before elantris...
I (generally) recommend Warbreaker between WoR and OB. If you can, why Warbreaker second?
instructions unclear, read the way of kings as my first ever Brandon Sanderson book.
Here’s how to read it
All of stormlight archive
Mistborn 1-3
War breaker
Elantris
Misborn 4-7
Arcanum Unbounded: 💀
White Sand: 💀💀💀
Warbreaker!
How does this man write so many books?
Well already messed it up. I read tress first then Misborn
O.O
Tress so early?!
It is because you don't need other books to understand the story. It's a huge deterrent to tell others they have to read multiple other series to get a few Easter eggs
Tress is one of the best starting spots too in my opinion
@@snowdrop9810I gave my mum a copy for Christmas as her first foray into Brandon's writing, and she loved it
I can say. I read through all of stormlight in a week. It was too much. I did not appreciate rythem of war as much as I probably should have
Max who just read straight through the entire stormlight archive in 3 weeks 👀
I personally started with the Stormlight Archive and it quickly became one of my all-time favorite series. I started there because I got more bang for my buck out of an audible credit. It is a good thing I started there though because I tried Mistborn next and did not enjoy it at all. and I think that if I started there I wouldn't have tried more on Brandons works.
Adoooonalsium
we cant read em fast enough, its like the expanding space between galaxies.
"i do intend for people to read" - Sanderson as he is doing 6 more books
“I do intend for people to read…”
Understatement of the century
Lmao
Yeah we gathered as much Brando 😂😂
I am dying rn lmao.
For people to reeeeead
Definitely don't skip Warbreaker. It adds a lot to the Stormlight Archive.
Before I read way of kings?
@@taewoods2034 Yes, for sure.
@@taewoods2034nah before words of radiance is fine. Most references start afterwards. I think the way of kings is also strong in that there’s a mystery of the universe that you won’t feel if you know too much cosmere
Mad im seeing this and just looking into it while in the middle of Oathbringer
@@ryukswifesame, gotta get another book now
Bold of you to assume that I could put Stormlight down long enough to read other books.
EXACTLY!!!!!
I’m rereading this series out loud to/for my current wife, haven’t read the fourth book yet. Every read I want to get through it fast, but unfortunately I don’t read fast, and read out loud slower. I do voices for some of the characters. Rock and Pattern’s voices are the most distinctive. Dalinar is just bass, but then so is stormfather if just slower. Oh and Sadeas is French nasal high pitched.
Liked your comment considering I am facing the same dilemma
@@andrewharris5281 Sir I think you have this confused. Your wife is supposed to be reading to you.
@andrewharris5281 Current wife? Will there be a new one in future?
I think Sanderson is the spirit of reading incarnate. His sole mission is to get every human being to read.
I love Elantris, a lot more than most. That book really has a special place in my heart. I think it’s in my Top 3 of BrandoSando’s books.
Same, i think it should be second after mistborn tbh, really fleshes out the feel of the interconnected magic systems in a way youd need 2-4 stormlight books to get if you started there
That was my first brando sando book and it was a great intro to his work for me - one of my faves for sure
@@jameskilgour387 Funnily enough I'd actually read Stormlight and Mistborn Era 1 at that point. I just really like Elantris.
Hrathen is one of my favorite characters of all time because I relate to him a ton! (Except the whole starting a civil war thing. Haha)
@@mangomonngo Honestly, I think he’s arguably the best antagonist Brandon has written, his motivations are clear, he’s intimidating and despite his somewhat redeeming qualities he’s actually a throughly horrible person driven by religion to do awful things.
"Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell" is still one of my favorites right up there with"The Emperor's Soul" ❤😊
"Shadows" was my first Sanderson read, I love it! ❤
Yes!!!!
thanks brandon. last year i tried your stuff with mistborn 1-3 and couldnt decide whether to go era 2 or straight into stormlight, and indecision resulted in picking neither. but now i might as well follow this order :)
I loved the Mistborn Wax and Wayne books via audiobook with Michael Kramer's narration.. A breath of fresh air with a lot of humorous banter between the characters. I listened while doing chores and my family would wonder what the heck I kept laughing at!
I am so happy whenever Brandon Sanderson pops up on screen. Such a great guy!
The goat
His work is amazing and pays a total homage to the fantasy genre.
I will forever standby the steel heart series being one of the best I’ve ever read
Do I have to jump?
yep
Thems the rules
I'll put a strong word in for Rithmatist! One of my favourite magic systems ever!
I think the best series to start with, at least for people who maybe don’t love reading as much, is the Reckoners, it really traps you in, Steelheart was the first book that I just couldn’t stop reading and that sensation didn’t stop while reading Firefight and Calamity
Ive read all standalones except elantris. Im on the last mistborn first trilogy. I might pick up elantris then
And then reread cytoverse. Then start way of kings. Then after every book, read the second mistborn trilogy. Then read the filler books in between.
I dont know if its the ideal order, but I did anyway. And I am having a blast
I started with mistborn then went to Elantris and Warbreaker then stormlight then wax and Wayne then his secret books which are all stand-alones then back to reread stormlight to make sure I remember everything for the new stormlight coming out. But to each their own right
This guy doesn't know a thing about Sanderson reading order
You are the best waiting for Your next books here in Poland ❤❤🙏🙏Thanks Lord of Fantasy from Stormlight Father❤❤
I just do what I do for all authors: start in publication order and work from there. That way I don’t accidentally spoil myself for any of their other works. 🤷🏻♂️
Honestly my first was the frugal wizards handbook for surviving medieval England
It was AMAZING so much so that I finished a day after I got it
Stephan king is the best 🔥
If your struggle with depression part 1 and 2 of storm light can be hard. But it's worth it. Or it was to me. But it was not easy, as it was like 80 hours of reminding me why I hate humanity lol
I think I disagree, namely about tress, at that point you have no idea who the narrator of tress is. I think that stormlight is a pretty good introduction to that character. Though I do agree with the rest, Mistborn > Warbreaker > Stormlight, is a pretty good start, though I do agree stormlight is a bit long and could be broken up
I don't think you need to know who Hoid is to read Tress. I would say Tress is the best standalone to start in on because it's self contained enough but also has enough little tidbits for you to be like "oh!" later if you read more Cosmere. It's such an all-around good package on its own too, that someone can read it and not feel like they are necessarily committing to 2, 6, a dozen very long books.
I've read Mistborn and the first two stormlight books. They're good.
You can't read Tress before Elantris‽ there's Elantris Spoilers in Tress!
Who is this guy??
I say blind, go for the Sunlit Man.
Honestly, hit home. Just awesome. Then warbreaker and elantris.
I have something funny to say, I have watched every single Sanderson lecture on writing, but I have never read any of his books. I'm just such a slow reader and I'm not super into epic fantasy...
I read Elantris in 2008 and I've loved Sanderson ever since
For the action hero getting stronger fans I think you will like Kaladin Stormblessed from the Way of Kings and
I think you will like Vin from Mistborn
Bro!?!? Tress? As a third one?! You need to read at least Mistborn Era 1 and the first 3 stormlight books before you do that in order to understand Hoid's significance!
TLDR;
1st. Original Mistborn Trilogy.
2nd. Warbreaker.
3rd. Go nuts.
My order is:
- Mistborn 1-3
- Elantris (bold move, I know, but I actually liked the book)
- Warbreaker
- Stormlight 1-2
- Tress (while waiting for Arcanum Unbounded to arrive to mail, there's 0 copies of it and Edgedancer in my country fsr)
- Currently reading Oathbringer
I'm only at Well of Ascension. It's so good!
Just yesterday I bought the first 3 stormlight archieve books, I have only read mistborn era 1 so far. Maybe if I need to I will take a break with the stand alone like he suggested.
