Humm.. so many risks taken here, (staging, re-arrangements of Purcell, vocalists not at-ease with baroque singing and some very dubious "stunts"), a production that tries too hard and yet...to my mind there's a wonderful and very commendable energy and merit to it, overall; "'make it new" accented with the German disaster of WWII (having seen KA several times in performance in Boston/NY / London). And yes, great the German speakers appreciate that high genius, Henry Purcell. Oh and 'bonus": Dryden, kinda ,in some German. Thank you Bonassoli for posting.
Go to what I call the "Shepherd's Trilogy" starting at 40:43, (&ending at forty eight m :twenty eight seconds) Those three pieces are my favorite part of this overall quirky but fun interpretation of Purcell & Dryden's classic. For non German speakers, the DVD of this production provides optional English subtitles. But alas, IMHO the version of How Happy The Lover at the end of the program, despite having a fine instrumental part was pretty awful with the soprano singing the traditional male countertenor part with an alternative melody that I just can't abide by.
I like some of the adaptions to more modern times and the involvement of the conductor. Some of the humorous elements are just too crude in my opinion and let the characters seem way too naive. For me the representation of blindness is questionable, touching other person's faces is a cheap cliche. I really enjoy the singing, so I even listened to the songs that I don't like that much.
Opera is sung in English. The theatre piece is spoken in German, the language of audience, which is usual practice in the theatre. Are the pieces of Goethe spoken in English, when staged in England?
@@igormarchetti4371 Do you prefer staging in historical costumes, i.e. from XVII century? But costumes , historical for us, were contemporary in Purcell's time. So the "modernisation" is consistent with the spirit of the work. Unless you prefer archaeological excavations rather than live theatre? Or maybe you don't know German?
It's nice that the Germans who produced Bach appreciate Purcell. He's not just worthy of appreciation, he was brilliant.
