The two of you along with the song choices, interpretations, and arrangements are a stellar example of the musical possibilities the universe holds for us to unfold and enjoy. A heartfelt thanks to the both of you.
Your musicianship/playing is wonderful Joe Gore. I've heard you play the melody over 100 times and I never tire of it. Additionally I like that little "bark" you wrangle out of that guitar by touch and attack - hard, soft and in the middle. Your dynamic choices are captivating. Looking forward to having a front row seat next week.
I’ve listened to “Don’t Worry Baby” a million times since I was 14 and loved it every time. You guys managed to add something to it, and it went down right.
It’s been special to me for a long time. When I was 15 or so I took a rock lyric writing class, and Roger Christian, who lyrics for this song and some other great early Beach Boys tunes, came to lecture.
Beautiful guitar playing of a beautiful song. It braught tears into my eyes, I guess tears of joy. I was moved by that musical moment and that's what I love about music. Thank you very much for that, Love you guys ! It's been warming my heart and and it's something I need in this crazy world.
WOW! Thank you for this elegant interlude. This made me feel good in a groovy way! Also, dear Joe, I am very much enjoying your Porkolator and Screech Owl pedals!
Aww, thanks! Until I started performing those duos with Jim, I spent over a year mostly playing acoustic guitar for my "Cryptomusicology" work in progress. I've practically forgotten what those pedals sound like!
Arrangement and discussion were great! I can understand Jim's mixed feelings towards it -- pop music of one's formative years can be simultaneously likeable and contemptible, especially through the lens of subsequent aggrandizement. Joe, keep preaching the bass-cut word! I originally heard about such circuits through your videos and articles, and can now see why G&L and Reverend have incorporated them. I'd love to see your "updated 2023" favorite circuit and comments, as I'm trying to decide between PTB or TBX for one of my HB guitar mods. Also, thanks to your articles, I have a Strat rewired like your mongrel "Nashville" middle blend knob, which is now pretty much my go-to mod!
i'm a bit down with music lately, but this is so refreshing and beautiful that i just picked up my guitar. indeed, both are among my fav artists `(not just guitarists.). Thank you very much.🙂 Ciao P
Thanks! This sort of is a studio recording, with great mics on the amps and a stereo room mic. I think some of these performances will end up on our eventual duet album. Other we’ll probably redo.
Terrific! Wonderful playing and great interpretations, both of you. It really sounds like your guitars are singing... the saturation and reverb are nice touches. Your discussion afterward is fun, as usual. You nailed it regarding BW's best songs. His moments of brilliance are especially enjoyable compared to the more typical Beach Boys schmaltz.
Absolutely great composition and interpretation from you both, you really captured that nostalgic guitar sound even down to the slightly distorted sound coming from the mic clipping. Excellent as usual.
I think the clipping here mostly comes from the Cult overdrive circuit built into my guitar. But man, we just recorded something yesterday with LOTS if clipping on the input channel. Hope it’s usable!
and "surf's up" is probably my most favorite song ever to be a song. This interpretation of "Don't Worry Baby" was just gorgeous. You guys are awesome!
@@rodgre Me too! Did you ever hear my guitar quartet arrangement? ua-cam.com/video/8rxKn3ZCc0U/v-deo.htmlsi=lCX2Hy5jGu2fLCnq Also, I somehow managed to miss this until recently - an amazing performance. ua-cam.com/video/uU-4AkDimt8/v-deo.htmlsi=wybTlkWbWjorz0pb
Another lovely interpretation. The pretty dissonances of the voicings, i just love them. Thanks for convincing Jim to play Beach Boys. And also, i listened about the bass cut, and have it wired in a fair few of my instruments. So one of us numbskulls out here care.
Kind of a Beatlesque take on Beach Boys. I could imagine George Martin working on the soundboard. Symphonic. Amazing what two solid players can do. Is the offset a custom job? Nice ax. What pickups are in it?
Hey Nick! How are you? Black Ice is a fascinating circuit, but it doesn’t work for me personally because of the volume drop when you engage it (inevitable with passive circuits, per the laws of physics). But most of my non-vintage guitars have either my my Cult overdrive or Duh distortion built in, powered by a 9-volt battery. Cult is a mutant grandchild of the Rangemaster, with none of the same values, but with the ridiculous touch-response you get from single-Ge-transistor boosters. Circuits like that have VERY low current draw - a single battery last for many months. A couple of my Strat-format guitars use the battery pack from Fishman’s Fluence pickup system. (Larry sells them separately.) It works the same, but you have to remember to recharge via USB.
I had to look up that model, and you’re right! But actually, it’s a variation Jazzmaster body that Warmoth sells. I’ve made a lot of DIY guitarist with unusual combinations of materials and weirdo electronics. But it’s all just bolting together prefab parts. I couldn’t carve a neck if my life depended on it.
Wow, I’m getting more bass-cut love from that one comment than in years of shrieking about the PTB circuit. (Which is really close to what I usually use.)
@@joe_gore "Bass-Cut Love"--now that's a song title right there! Wait, isn't that a Captain and Tennille tune? 🤣I read your blog page on the bass-cut circuit. You prefer 500k-A? How else does it differ from the G&L PTB (if I may ask and it's not a trade secret)?
One of my favorite B. Wilson songs. I am a Joe Gore fan, and Joe and Jim are a magical pairing. I do have one constructive criticism though...the cookies. Seeing them there, uneaten, is just wrong. :-) As for Wilson's magic, don't forget Caroline No!
I wish I could turn on the radio and hear something as nice as this. Beautiful work!

Better than the original, you guys kill it every time.

aww, thanks! Yes, our plan is an album and shows in 2024!
Went to the Hank Williams birthday at the ivy Room last week and you guys came up. First one was at the Ace Cafe back in 93. Good times.
I love the Ivy Room (super-cool Berkeley CA venue). Who performed this year?
What an amazing cover 👍🏻! Great job 🎶🎸!!!
I've lost count of how many bass cut controls I've installed on humbucker-equipped guitars because of your recommendation, Joe- people DO care.
Awww! I feel better. :)
Lush...rich. Thank you both.
Beautiful!
Thank you. It’s way easier to sound beautiful when you start with a beautiful song! :)

Love it. More, please.
Thanks! That IS the plan, fingers crossed!
Fabulous
The discussion is my favorite part of this
thanks
I have to get used to it, and making so many no-talking videos in the past. It’s reassuring that some folks seem to enjoy it. :)
On Chelsea Bridge: "I'll play songs that suck just for my friends." Thanks for the uplift and the laugh on a lazy Sat am.
Hi Dan! It's so nice when you reunite with a long-ago friend and instantly have the same old rapport. :)
Well done, hope you do a studio recording of this wonderful arrangement.

Yeah, I’m always hyperbolic about that. (“I shriek about incessantly, not NO ONE CARES.”) Thanks for the reassurance that that’s not exactly true. :)
🤚 amazing 🖐️

Are you kidding? I swear by my G&Ls with their PTB system: passive treble- and bass-cut controls, 500k and 1meg reverse audio taper, respectively.

This is the earliest Brian song that I deeply love. (Trust me - the cookies were enthusiastically consumed.)
I NEVER got a car reference or metaphor from "Don't Worry Baby."
Not even when he sings, “I guess I should've kept my mouth shut when I started to brag about my car?” But EMOTIONALLY speaking, I agree.
This is what "I know how to play the guitar" sounds like. To a T.
What a nice thing to say. It doesn’t always feel like, though! :)
