The album version had only McDonald on lead vocals and keys, Keith Knudsen on drums, Tiran Porter on bass, Bobby LaKind on congas, and Bill Payne on extra synths. Tiran and Keith are also credited with backing vocals. Various live versions feature the full band, with both drummers, Cornelius Bumpus on organ/keys, guitars, and an extra outro featuring John McFee's guitar solo. Some of these live versions feature band members reproducing ALL the background vocals including the "I'll be holding on" line in the chorus - just amazing. And yes, McDonald was invited to join the band as an emergency replacement for Tom Johnston, and was surprised when the Doobies invited him to stay onboard for the next album.
This was the later incarnation of the Doobies that had Michael McDonald as lead singer. He was all over '70's and '80's music with solo hits, duet hits, and with this group. He was not in the group for the other Doobie hits you've listened to. If you like this one, you will also like What a Fool Believes and Takin' It to the Streets, two other McDonald/Doobie hits. He was with Steely Dan, singing back-up on their albums 1973-80. He backed up almost everyone who was anyone. His duet with James Ingram, Yah Mo Be There, won a Grammy for best R&B performance by a duet or group.
They were always a fantastic band and addition of the silky Michael macdonald elevated their sound to a different level, in my opinion.
Yeah, sometimes a band needs an infusion of creativity and change to propel it forward to the next level.
@@JamesBond-ib9tq doesn't always work, trying new things but this band are too talented to not be able to diversify their sound and try new things.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "South City Midnight Lady" !!!!
Michael McDonald! Sigh ❤❤
@@SusanJohnston yup. "South City Midnight Lady" (1973) pre- Michael McDonald!! McDonald era Doobies is fine, I just like the pre Michael era better.
Patrick Simmons sings lead on "South City Midnight Lady,". A beautiful song.
"Taking it to the Streets" was a favorite of mine from the Doobs as well. Tons of great songs from this band. Whether it be Tommy Johnston or Michael McDonald on lead vocals, plenty to choose from. "Long Train Runnin' " is another favorite of mine.
Haven’t heard this in forever. Forgot how much I like it. Boy, you can always instantly recognize Michael McDonald’s voice.
Real Love by the Doobie Brothers is🔥🔥🔥
1st concert I ever went to was the Doobie Brothers on their Minute by Minute tour. Great show. Lots of doobie in the air. Check out their "It keeps you running". The opening chords will blow you away.
Takin’ It To The Streets is a Michael McDonald doobies must listen 🎸🎸
The sappy years. The early years were the best.
I was attending a community meeting in Middle Tennessee many years ago. When I entered the room there not many empty seats but I found one and as I approached I thought that man looked very familiar. Just as I sat sat down the man reached out to shake my hand and introduced himself, “Hi. I’m Michael”. OH! That’s why he looked familiar.
Immediately after, I walked across the street to my favorite lunch cafe. As I entered one of McDonald’s more notable songs was playing but the title slipped my mind. So, I asked the server (she claims to be his #1 fan) to remind me the name of the song. She said, “I keep forgetting”. I said, “Me too. That’s why I’m asking you.” She looked puzzled and repeated, “I Keep Forgetting”. I replied, “Well, it will come to me later.” She practically yelled at me…”I KEEP FORGETTING is the name of the song!’”
We were having our own little Abbot&Costello moment before I finally caught on.
I wore this album out years ago. Such a great piece of work. Sitting out back BBQ and sippin wine listening to this album with a group of friends. Good times and great memories.
"Real Love" Doobie Brothers !! Trust me !!
When I was growing up, this was one of my stepdad‘s favorite bands, we had Great Danes, and whenever the Doobies came on the radio they would put their paws up on his shoulders, and they would dance in the living room, It was the cutest thing ever!… Sweet, sweet memories! I saw them years later in concert in my early 20s, It was a great show of course.💕✌💫
I love that these bands still tour I’m 54 so I was too young to see them in the 70’s in the last 5 or 6 years I’ve seen them three times still sound great 👍
Micheal was a great lead singer for the Dobbie Brother's. And they were great singer's and could play there instruments so well.
The Doobies lead singer, Tom Johnston, took a hiatus from the group for a few years. Michael McDonald took over lead. He took the Doobies to a new level. They are presently on tour, with Tom and Michael singing.
And Pat Simmons, John McFee and John Cowan. Their amazing vocals and harmonies are just as good as they have always been. Harmonies on the level of the Eagles, Little River Band, Poco. What other band has five singers who can sing lead??
One of their best!!!! ❤😊 Thank you guys!!😊
Go listen to him in " I Keep Forgetting Were Not In Love Anymore" . YOU WILL LOVE IT AMBER!
They’ve done I Keep Forgetting
the doobie brothers were something to listen to back around i have seen them in the past great song and michael mcdonald is one the very best singers ever that voice is off the charts.
Doobie Brothers best song is "Takin It To The Streets". I believe it's the song they're best known for.
Awesome Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald! My era!
When Tom JOhnston left for health reasons and Michael McDonald came in 1978 the whole sound of the Doobie Brothers changed.
Jazz guitarist Larry Carlton also did a version of this Doobie Brothers classic with Michael MacDonald on the keyboards .
He wasn't in the band till years later from the original band...
Such a great song. Smooth listening. This is a whiskey sippin' song. Kick back on the porch on a summer day music.
What you're hearing now is the Doobies after they were joined by Michael NcDonald. He was a hell of a writer and singer with the cool falsetto. That's why these songs sound more soulful and jazzy. Thanks to MM.
Two other great Doobie Brothers songs with MM singing lead are Takin’ It To The Streets, and Little Darlin’.
Here’s another 70’s tune for you: “Life is a Rock” by Reunion. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
The high hats are like the ticking of a clock my friends.
One of their best live tunes. Rock on.
Anyone who's been in a band trying to cover this song can tell you, that keyboard and bass intro is a real bear to get right!
I liked the Mike McDonald era, but the earlier Tom Johnston stuff was good too. You have to hand it to guitarist Pat Simmons, bassist Tiran Porter, and drummers John Hartman and Keith Knudsen for playing with this band through a significant change in styles when McDonald came in. Porter was an absolute beast on bass.
I suggest "It Keeps You Running" and "Takin' It To The Streets."
I was a teenager when this song was popular in 1978 and I never really knew what the chorus was saying. I thought it was "by me, by me, by me, by me." It should have been obvious from the title.
This is during the Michael MacDonald period so the sound definitely changed from their earlier stuff and their post-Michael period. You've already reacted to What A Fool Believes so try checking out Taking It To The Streets. I think that was one of the first Michael songs with the Doobie Brothers.
Best song on that album is "How Do the Fools Survive" IMO. Great guitar fade.
Taking It To The Streets !
Speaking of a "light bulb" moment,, listen to Steely Dan "Peg" & pay special attention to the backing vocals..Sound familiar??.🤪
Micheal McDonald joined the band after they were already successful. He just added another flavor to them. He also did a song with Christopher Cross "Ride Like The Wind" . I think you may have already reacted to it, but weren't aware of him on that song.
You guys reacted to Michael McDonald's I Keep Forgetting 8 months ago and mentioned then that he was a former member of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. You react to so many songs, it's perfectly understandable that you forget a few every now and then.
I cannot pick a favorite song from either of their incarnations because they are all so good!
Neal’s Fandango is amazing! Great band with so many amazing songs!
🥰🥰🥰 Love The Doobie Brothers!
Doobies were great before and after McDonald joined the band.
Michael McDonald was added to the group after the then lead singer Tom Johnston fell ill. Michael completely changed the band's sound to a more blue eyed soul sound. Check out the liver version of "Takin it to the Street 1977"
On the theme of the "minute", all you have to do is react to listening to the superb EAGLES song: "New York Minute" (released in 1989). However, I recommend the live version 'Unplugged' (1994) with its enveloping orchestration and the emotional voice of Don Henley. Thanks to you two.
It's simple for me, Mike MacDonald has one of the best voices out there.
Michael McDonald did songs like "Sweet Freedom", "Take it to Heart", "Our Love", "Blink of an Eye", and many more.
When Michael McDonald joined the Doobies he brought the Soul with him.
Awesome reaction 😃 When Michael joined the band he brought a lot of his smooth influence, ❤ the Doobies, recommend "Daughters of the sea" and also some Chicago live At Tanglewood "Beginnings" Thank you Peace! 🙏
Real Love by The Doobies has a similar vibe with Michael McDonald singing lead.
Just before the Doobies changed their sound and brought in Mr.McDonald, they had an album called Stampede, and a track on that rocking album was a cover of a Motown song called Rock Me (a little while) that is my second favourite Doobies track.
Please,check it out,you’ll love it.
If they paid more attention to the comments, they might pickup on some of these artists band and solo work, crossovers, collabs, and supergroups, as well as covers.
I saw the notification and was hoping it was for your movie reaction channel. I'm not disappointed.
Classic blue eyed soul 💙
Think of wearing good sound-cancelling headphones and roller skates and you've got the vibe!
There's a live version (1977 I think) of another great tune from them called "It keeps you Runnin'" that you should also check out. It has a similar laid-back feel and killer vocals from Michael McDonald that "Minute by Minute" does.
Great to hear the Dobbie Brothers and the vocals of Michael McDonald, he has a great voice and it makes this a cool song-Colin Ward
Have y’all done “It Keeps You Running”… another great one with Michael lead vocal
Michael McDonald was also part of the New York Rock and Soul revue, led by Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, where they would do versions of their own songs as well as covers of R&B classics. I recommend their version of Jackie Wilson's Lonely Teardrops and the Rascals People Got To Be Free.
One of Michael McDonalds best solo fun, feel-good songs is Sweet Freedom from the 1986 movie, Running Scared. Fun video.
You would love taking it to the streets. You really can't lose with Michael McDonald on vocals and piano❤ he does a duet with Patti LaBelle called "on my own" that will give you chills.
Michael McDonald on his Motown singing Ain't No Mountain High Enough
The first five albums with Tom Johnston were the original Doobie Brothers. Some rockin' ones to check out that you haven't done yet are Nobody, Without You and Evil Woman. Some mellower ones are Dark-Eyed Cajun Woman, Another Park Another Sunday and I Cheat The Hangman. Michael McDonald came in after that and it changed their sound. Echoes Of Love is a good one from that era.
Seeing them on the 23rd … excited!❤
Y'all are cracking me up about not knowing Michael McDonald was singing lead, lol. You can NOT not know his voice. I think most of the other songs you've reacted to was before Michael joined the band. The Taking it to the Streets album was when their sound shifted to blue-eyed soul. You should check out Taking it to the Streets, It Keeps You Runnin', Real Love, Rockin' Down the Highway, South City Midnight Lady, and Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)
Michael McDonald's voice is like salted caramel anything!
Michael McDonald was a great addition to the Doobie Brothers.
Fun fact. Michael McDonald sang on every great song in the ‘70s.
Michael McDonald was the lead singer in the Doobie Brothers and also another popular band, see if you run into it. Later on in life he was part of a band named The Dukes of September. With Bozz Scaggs and others! Fyi
This brings me right back to the seventies. Great review!
Great song
Yes, as everyone has said the Doobie Brothers and "two sounds": Michael McDonald as lead and then the hits before and after McDonald, with Tom Johnston on lead.
He wasn’t always with the Doobie Brothers. So his voice is not as prominent as this in all their songs. He was also in Steely Dan.
I like to request more little big town doing "little white church" or "pontoon" both songs are good....
Michael McDonald! Sigh❤❤
Wow! This band means a lot to me. On my 21st birthday, with my soon-to-be husband, saw the Doobie Brothers on their first farewell tour in July 1982, 10 days before our wedding. What a great time that was! I've been to many concerts but that one was special.
May I suggest “ Takin’ It To The Streets “ , the Doobies first hit with Michael McDonald!
A couple other great Doobie Brothers songs with Michael McDonald that you haven't reacted to yet are Takin' It To The Streets and It Keeps You Runnin'.
Always has been one of my favorite Doobies.
Hey fam! This is the song right here! There's a 70's show called What's Happening that you both need to check out because The Doobie Brothers are featured on there through out the show! Go ahead and groove Jay and Amber! 😊
Song makes you sway ❤
You GenXers missed out on this
Blue eyed soul
Just keep this in mind: if it sounds like Michael McDonald it IS Michael McDonald because no one sounds like him.
Gotta listen to “Takin’ It To The Streets” next.
I love watching ya'll make connections, like with McDonald.
don't talk about McDonald's not being part of Doobie. He was apart of them for a long time
My mom and dad were the musical entertainment for harrahs casino in atlantic city in the early 80s. So i heard this type of stuff all the time they had to know alll the top 40. I'd be the only young boy runnin around the casino drinking endless shirly temples
Love this song and Michael McDonald’s voice is heavenly.
For your next Doobies song, please check out The Captain and the Kid. :)
Philly?? Michael McDonald is from St. Louis!
😃
Love me some Doobie Brothers although not a big fan of this one. That's okay tho. They are playing locally soon but the cheapest seat is over $250 US. That's like a Million dollars CDN, so no concert for me sadly. I'll have to rely on past memories.
Still they have some great tunes you've yet to hear. Check out 'Natural Thing', 'Dark Eyed Cajun Woman', 'Ukiah' or 'Cotton Mouth'. All great DB tunes. Cheers.
If you are interested in a few more Michael McDonald solo songs to take in, here are a few good ones. "If That's What It Takes" from his first solo album, "Yah Mo B There" a duet with James Ingram, "Take It To Heart", and "Sweet Freedom" from the movie Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines which would be a good one for the movie reaction.
You would enjoy Michael McDonald's soulful duet with James Ingram, "Yah Mo B There." You have only reacted to one of James Ingram's songs and he has a treasure trove of powerful and touching solo and duet ballads. Time to get back to some James Ingram! ;o)
What a great song, love everything they did. You should react to "Children of the sun" by Billy Thorpe, an Epic sci-fi based song, fun and quirky.
How about Bonnie Raitt - Give It Up?
Micheal McDonald - "Ya Mo Be There"- check that out...next!
I can come up with three off the top of my head that I think you would love, provided you haven’t already done them yet. Taking it to the Streets, It Keeps you Runnin’, and then Michael McDonald as a solo act, I Keep Forgetting. I think you already did that one though.
Michael McDonald & James Ingram - Yah Mo B There
Great choice!(I like both eras for different reasons). Suggestions: “Rockin’ Down the Highway “ and (it may sound odd to your viewers) “I Cheat the Hangman “-totally different mood and sound!
P.S. The Doors “Touch Me”. If you try it, you’ll see why (beside Morrison sounds completely sober!😳)
PLEASE check out "Taking It To The Streets"! It's rock, it's R&B, it's Gospel. It's awesome! 🎶⭐
