I always listened to this as my reference recording when I played this on my last undergraduate recital last winter 2020, thanks for the fantastic recording Dr. Nabb! You sound splendid as always.
part of the reason that I stopped playing classical music...the demand to hear that style of music was never there...or I ended up playing for the same audience with little to no pay at all...it's unfortunate...
I have to apologize because I’ve been sleeping you on you dude. I never gave your recording a shot, but it’s actually the best recording I’ve heard, well done
Which part. The improvisation or caprice. The with the improvisation, learn to play the piece with perfect timing at a decent pace. Then bring it up a little bit so it’s at tempo. For the runs, build them up one note at a time. So like in bar 14 where you have that novemtuplet, start just with a fast resolve down to the D, then move to doing D#,D,B and so on until you can do the whole dissension. Do the same for the sextuplets a couple bars before as well as the quintuplet figure that’s a part of the main melody. Fingering help for Improvisation: for a lot of this piece, you can keep your low C# key down. I use it to keep my D# from falling flat, for G# and of course low C# As for the caprice, it’s just metronome work start off at a slow tempo like eight note equals 100 (or less) and get all the notes down at that tempo. Start bringing it up from there to around 160bpm. From there, start working your dynamics and your expression in. Focus intensively on how you want to shape each phrase. Once you have dynamics down, push the tempo to as high as you can go 275-280, but for performance, take it about 10 clicks slower. A couple fingerings to help with the caprice: for G# to A# and back, just hold down G# fingering and change the note with the side Bb key. For G# to F# movement, you’ll hold a G# again and switch the notes using your middle finger in your right hand.
Brings back memories of middle school Solo and Ensemble competitions (Texas).

I love your pacing in the first movement! This has been my reference recording for the last 4 or so months, it’s helped me so much!
These are great, Nate. Make more. You've got a perspective and layers of musicianship that needs to be shared.
This is really good I just wish it was more popular
Anderson Evitt thank you. The piece is certainly very popular among the classical saxophone crowd. Glad you like it!
