A parting agent, in the form of fine dry dust or sand, is sprinkled over the pattern first to prevent damage to the mould when removing the pattern and the sand is compacted as the cope and drag are filled. The pressure and force are light at first to keep the pattern and cores from moving, but more is applied as the volume is reduced until you're dealing heavy blows with the ram. The sprue and vent patterns are added into the cope as it's being rammed up and are NOT cut in at the end. That takes more time since you not only have to remove the sand, but repair and clean out the mould afterwards. The casting channels and reservoir are what's cut in. With industrial castings, the sprue and vents are part of the pattern to reduce ram up time.
