  • This is a popular tenkara fly that we sell on dragontailtenkara.com so we wanted to show you how to tie this fly yourself because it is always better to catch fish on flies you tie yourself. All materials are available on dragontailtenk...

Dragontail Hellbender arrived yesterday. Very impressed with the quality. Got the full santa claus rod tube, sock, and kit that came with a 14' furled leader, extra tip, and added some extra 3x and 4x tippet and a few flies, this being one of them. Nice. Can't wait to fish it. Its a perfect compliment to my Tenkara USA Sato which I love for small fish and bluegills here in central Texas. Very happy with Dragontail. Mahalo y'all!

Great video, thanks for sharing! This Sakasa Kebari (bought a dozen from your website) is a good fish getter. Trees also. 🤣

Yes, is there 1 hook size commonly used for these flies, tying some for a friend and dont want to collect a ton of hooks I wont use, or do any regular trout hooks work?

Commonly we use size 12 hooks for sakasa kebari, you can use a bigger or smaller but size 12 is the common one and the one I use most of the time.

Thanks for sharing! Going to tie a few! Just got my first Tenkara rod setup today at 7:3 - 12'. The six flies I received don't look like the hackle was of poor quality so I am going to redo them with the bump of thread so the hackle lays correctly and give movement and life the the pattern. Does the hackle have to be hen hackle or can stiffer cock hackle like CDL be substituted or added to the collar? The possibilities to these flies seem endless! Cheers!

You can use any hackle you want and it should work fine. A soft hen hackle will be great for more movement but sometimes trout like the stiffer hackle.

What kind of vise are you using? I notice the clamp is much different than the Peak vices you sell on your website.

this is the Norvise, I do love the Peak vise and the Renzetti vises as well. I have just started trying out the Norvise but I have not been using its best features much yet.

Good stuff! Do you ever tie this in different colors?

White, yellow, purple, and olive work great as well for the back body thread.

    Hi,
Great tie. Wondering which colour of Brahma Hen hackle you used?
    Thanks, Duncan

this is natural mottled grey brahma hen saddle. A mottled dark dun would work great on this fly as well.
