  • I this early silent film a group of people go on a picnic only to find their food infested with bugs and rodents. After taking a carriage back to their residence and going to sleep one of them begins to dream as a very wide use of stop-motion is used to illustrate the dream. The film contains some very interesting effects and scenes for such an age from a dragon spitting fire to a pot turning into a clay head through stop-motion. This film was released in France in 1909 under the title, "Une excursion incohérente," and was directed by Camille de Morlhon with film work by Segundo de Chomón.

Although Chomon has still kept the tableau shots and his editing seems unaware of the advances Porter and Griffith made, the conventional use of the sets, jump cuts, stop animation, hand drawn animation, and stunts(look at those jumps though windows) previously used in his and other filmmakers repertoire, is still incredibly creative, impressive, and at times even to the modern eye, effective. Don't let its perceived camp fool you. These early use of techniques may belie some of the interesting themes and styles explored in his and his contemporaries' films .

I've read some figure about bugs, but this makes me wonder how many birds a person swallows in their sleep every year, on average?

Get over it. To dismiss or to even find it necessary to make comment on another because they don't conform to socially constructed gender roles and codes seems pretty bigoted. I'm shocked someone could watch such an incredible piece of film history, and this would be the only comment they choose to leave. Yikes.

Besides it is a throwover from Shakespearean days, when acting was not a form of employment that garnered much honor and thus few women entered into it and men had to play women roles. It made for an interesting Romeo and Juliet.

It was more common than you would think, just not as accepted in society as it is today. Actors dress up like characters they play, this isn't the same as drag queens. I enjoyed it more once I realized it was a man because he seemed to bring some fun and humor into the film if you watch him closely. Wish I knew the actor's name.
