What TF is compelling Rhaenyra to say fluffy, nice stuff like "You have much changed 😏" and "You speak as if from a distant dream" after Alicent literally just decided to sacrifice her whole family and her house. Dude, you just asked your childhood bestfriend to hand over the life of her son(s) and you're talking as if you two are high school besties who are now rekindling your friendship after some petty argument that only lasted two days. Even King Robert and Ned Stark displayed more tension, frustration, and regret in a similar matter. And that was over the sacrifice of a Direwolf, yet alone children! Why are people not seeing this?!?!

Alicent forced Aegon to usurp Rhaenyra by telling him that Rhaenyra would kill him is she became the queen to secure her throne. He even said that he will not challenge her and was ready to leave Kings landing. Fast forward to now, Alicent is betraying him for the freedom of her and Helena. I mean... what was the point then?
Also, Aegon's son was killed brutally in his own castle. "A son for a son" did the writers forget about his murder?

@@Empxenu that was an oak resembling a weirwood tree. And even as an oak, that is a botanical error: Red Keep is a young fortress built no more than 150 years before, and there is no way that young on an oak was that big. Also, if it really was an heart tree, that is an an additional lore error: when the Andals invaded Westeros 6000 years prior, they brought the cult of the seven and destroyed every weirwood tree in the south, while only those in ancient castles survived: Red Keep didn't even existed at that time. And even if they somehow and somewhy planted a weirwood tree in Red Keep after its construction, Baelor I (who made the cult of the Seven the official religion of the reign) would have burned it 50 years before the events of the show.

The creature in the Godswood was a Green Man. They live on the Isle Of Faces in the Gods Eye, which is the lake next to Harrenhal. Almost nobody gets to see them since the Isle is magically protected and almost nobody gets to go there. The Isle is covered in weirwood trees and is the place where The Pact was signed, thousands of years ago, between the Children Of The Forest and the First Men. It will probably have an important role to play in the main GoT timeline when/if GRRM ever gets around to finishing the series.
The Three-Eyed-Crow that Daemon saw in his vision is probably Bryndon Rivers aka Bloodraven: he was born way after Deamon's time and has a long and fascinating history. He's the same Three-Eyed Crow who trained Bran in the main series.
Remember, Alicent didn't set out to give Aegon up to be executed, she tried to save him by cutting a deal whereby he'd bend the knee to Rhaenyra, but Rhaenyra, correctly, said that wasn't enough. Thousands of smallfolk have already died on the premise that which nobleman/noblewoman sits on the Iron Throne is a matter so important that it's worth it. It can't just end with a handshake and gentlemens' agreement to forget it all, because a) that dimishes the value of all the death and suffering, and b) it only sets The Realm up for a re-run 10 or 20 years later. Ironically, Rhaenyra has just proved all Alicent and Otto's earlier fears correct: she always would have had to kill Aegon sooner or later, even if it's taken her years to come to terms with it herself. Even if Aegon had never even tried to take the throne, the simple fact of his existence, and the belief amongst many that he should, by right and custom, have sat the throne instead of her, would mean that plots and treasons would swirl around him like flies around a honeypot, even if he never initiated them. As for Aemond, he is outside Alicent's control and both she and Rhaenyra know it, so what's the point them cutting a deal over him? Aemond's gonna Aemond whatever they agree.
This season was not only affected by HBO lopping two episodes off it late in the day, after it had been written for ten, but also by the writer's strike, which meant they couldn't amend dialogue and scripts on the fly as shooting progressed and opportunities arose or disappeared. This probably explains the bitty Rhaena-chasing-the-dragon sequences: they only had a small amount that was scripted, so they shot as much footage as they could within that limit and then stretched it out as far as they could in the edit. It probably also explains why it didn't end on a bit set-piece battle or action scene. It's no great spoiler to reveal that the next big battle is a sea battle in The Gullet: there's no way they could have squeezed the cost of extras, sets and CGI for that into this season when it had already been cut short for budgetary reasons.

Very good comment! I completely concur.
About the scene between Rhaenyra and Alicent: I think Alicent realized that there was no reasoning with Rhaenyra and she had to give up Aegon and Aemond and Daeron were beyond the control of Rhaenyra at that moment.

    • @ceezyjeffezy2213

Yeah I loved the scene with Alicent and Rhaenyra. Alicent wanted to relinquish the responsibility of holding the throne by allowing a bloodless takeover, but Rhaenyra correctly laid out what the difference was between the previous offer and now. Too many arms have been declared and loss to just end it with words.
Aemond is a kinslayer. I think she knows he will meet a nasty end no matter what she does, but she tried to save Aegon and Halena.

Easter Egg: The Weirwood at Harrenhal has a special face, that of the creator, George R.R. Martin... all hail!
The creature in the Godswood at Harrenhal was a Greenman. They are an ancient sacred order charged with protecting the Isle of Gaces in the Godseye lake.
In the visions Daemon had, we saw Ser Brynden Rivers, aka Bloodraven, bastard son of King Aegon IV, the man who would later become the Three-Eyed Raven and taught Bran Stark to succeed him as the Three-Eyed Raven. After Daemon, Bloodraven also wielded Dark Sister, one of the two Valyrian steel ancestral swords of House Targaryen. There is a not-so-popular, yet interesting, theory that Daemon and Bloodraven are the same person. We will see more of Bloodraven in HBO's new upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but not until season 3 of that show, if they match 1 book to 1 season.
That show centers around a wandering Hedge Knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his loyal squire, Egg. "Egg" is short for Aegon, as in Targaryen, future King Aegon Targaryen, Fourth of his name. But only Dunk, Egg, and Egg's father know Egg's true identity. You may remember in Game of Thrones, when Maester Aemon was dying he was talking to his little brother, Egg, that's this Aegon.
We will also get to see a young Maester Aemon, and I am hoping we also get to see a young Lady Olenna Tyrell. I think that's who Maester Aemon was referring to when he told Sam he had once been in love.
On a side note, Ser Duncan the Tall is the grandfather of Hodor and great-grandfather of Brienne of Tarth.
So, while we may have to wait 2 years for another House of the Dragon, we won't have to wait 2 years for a new Westeros show. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should premiere in early-ish 2025.

i dont think they are portraying it as a moral choice to execute aegon. i think they are trying to say it's a necessity. that the world would not acknowledge rhaenyra as the queen as long as the current king and the previous king's firstborn son is alive and can one day return and have the favour of people. but i agree that aemond and daeron being next in line pose a similar threat. i think it might be implied aemond would not be allowed to live either, not just because of his status but also because of him having vhagar. seems like what otto intimidated alicent with to push her into preparing her son to rule is coming to fruition, but it wouldn't have become such necessity if alicent didn't push aegon towards ruling. it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. and i think the show portrays alicent as a bad mother who made many mistakes. the black side isn't all nice and fluffy either but they could be portrayed more flawed for sure

They ruined Alicent for me finally and officially. The one thing she had was she stood for her family and for her children- even Cercei wouldn’t do what she did. She didn’t just give up Aegon, she gave up Aemond and Daeron to the sword. Horrible human as a mother. They contradicted her own character with season 1 not just the books.
And Rhaenyra- at first she says she would wish on a mother at what was done to Jahaerys because she lost her own son… and now she forgets the poor child and says “a son for a son” … w-what?

Alicent started out trying to cut a deal whereby Aegon would bend the knee to Rhaenyra, but Rhaenyra, quite rightly, wasn't having it, and dropped a truth bomb on her: the ONLY way for Rhaenyra to be secure on the throne, after all this blood has been spilled, is if Aegon (and Aemond and Daeron) were dead. Alicent wasn't in any kind of bargaining position at that point: she'd already admitted that they were going to lose, so it was a choice between losing on Rhaenyra's terms (Aegon's head) or losing in battle without any terms. Saving Helaena was the only thing she could get out of the situation. They both knew that there was no point making deals about Aemond or Daeron, because they were outside Alicent's control anyway.
Of course, when Rhaenyra rolls up to Kings Landing to find Aegon fled, courtesy of Larys, she's going to assume that Alicent reneged on the deal, and that's not going to be pretty.

    In defense of Alicent:
The Greens have as good as lost already at this point. 7 dragons to 2 is a decisive advantage. Maybe for some people it would be better to fight on to the bitter end no matter what, but surrendering in hopes of sparing as many lives as possible is more reasonable. Given everything that has happened this season, it makes sense to me that this is the path Alicent would take. She no longer has any conviction that the Greens were in the right in the first place, and even if she did, the current leader of the Greens tried to murder his brother and left him in a state in which she likely thinks death will be a mercy. (See what she recently asked Orwyle, "and what will he be if he survives?") Now Aemond is trying to force Helaena to fight for him while raining "ruin and death" on the realm's smallfolk both with his dragon and his political authority. Additionally, the last she saw of Rhaenyra, she was still searching desperately for a way to resolve the conflict peacefully; because of this, Alicent has every reason to believe that she will be as merciful to any Greens that surrender as is possible. She probably came to Dragonstone hoping against hope that this meant she could secure the safety of all of her children except Aemond, who is clearly a lost cause. She only seemed to accept that Aegon, at least, would have to die as well after Rhaenyra insisted upon it.

No, *Aegon* is the problem with the throne takeover. Aemond is a powerful piece, but he is not the obstacle. Aegon is the *king* . He is crowned, he is anointed, he has the legal authority, he is the one *people see as the king* . Rhaenyra cannot take the throne without removing Aegon. And him abdicating under duress will not work. Such an action will not change the perception of the realm about his authority, it will not change the support of half the noble houses of him, it will guarantee the continuation of the war until only one claimant remains.
So Rhaenyra is completely correct. At this point there is no choice, she *must* kill Aegon. And the irony is that Alicent herself is responsible for steering the situation to this point. Aegon refusing the throne *before* his crowning would have let Rhaenyra leave him alone under the right circumstances. Now it is too late.

Hell, she was considering doing just that even *after* it was usurped in the show up until Luke's death.

I am Team Green, but I still agree with you that they made a mess out of all characters at this point. Still think they try to portray the Blacks as the "good" side, but at the expance of the characters making sense and archieving their parts they play in the books.

I couldn’t agree MORE. To add, the way they treated Laena Velaryon and butchered her relationship with Rhaenyra should be criminal. How they cut the only canon black girl from the book (Nettles) and just gave her story to someone else (Rhaena, all the while giving her so little screen time to develop her arc that it’s laughable). Erased queer women that were allies of the blacks. How they are spitting on Rhaenyra’s motherhood by still making her sympathetic to Alicent even though at this point they have been enemies for longer than they have ever been friends and there are kids DEAD from BOTH sides. It’s honestly exhausting. And then you have the writers say this is a “feminist” show because, and I quote “we even have female dragons”. God.

DAMN bro, it's that different from the books? I knew something was fishy when all I kept hearing before the show started and when it premiered was "Daemon, the Rogue Prince" or "Daemon, he's the most dangerous man, he's dark and unpredictable" and on top of that, that he is GRRM's FAVORITE CHARACTER apparently. So I'm over here like waiting for something remarkable, convincing, and intriguing. No, dude, the way people were hyping up this character, I was expecting Jaime Lannister (S1-S4) levels of characterization, but damn, as for now, I am disappointed. You probably have just convinced me to get the book so I can read it for what it is.

You really just picked the little parts that support your argument, and ignored everything else that clearly proves the show is biased towards team black, and more specifically Rhaenyra lol

I found your reaction to Ulf very curious this episode. Most people do not find him funny at all this episode and if they do they stop laughing by the dinner scene. Can't you see how much of a problem his attitude will be?
That combined with your confusion on why Rhaenyra needs to kill Aegon made for a real head-scratcher of a reaction.

when Rhaenyra says the history will paint you villain she was right every one started to hate Alicent after this episode and i thinks it is the writers intentions
Alicent has never been a good mother because she really doesn't how to be one, she was forced to play the queen by Otto and she forced her son upon the throne even though he was not ready for it or even trained him for this, and now she think she already lost her sons, Aemond and Aegon can't be controlled by her so they are gonna go to battle probably lose and die
She also has not been a mother to Dareon and she already said it was her lack of mothering that created Aegon and Aemond so she wants to distant herself from him so Dareon wouldn't become someone like Aegon and Aemond
So the only thing that she has not already lost is her daughter and she is the only one that she can save at this point
it does not mean you should like what she is doing but i thought this might make you understand her character

She can’t save Helaena either tho. Rhaenyra will have to take her as a hostage since people will see her as the usurper’s queen. It’s like with what happened to King Louis and Marie Antoinette.
