Thanks a million for this EXTREMELY helpful video! So many other videos don't focus on the implications of medical underwriting to switch from Medicare Advantage to Supplemental. I've heard people say MA is great because it's cheap or free when you have no health problems, but when you have ongoing problems later, the copays make it expensive. I wonder how many people choose Advantage and then realize that they can't move to another state as they planned.
Thank you so much for educating us about these. I appreciate the details you have presented here. Now I understand how it works. My husband and I are nearing retirement. God bless you Grandpa and may you continue to have good health!
Good Morning Grandpa - just to introduce myself, I managed & work in the health industry for over 17 years. To my understading of the Advantantage Plans, there are HMO's & PPO's. The HMO's limit the plan members to within the Network & requires a member to get referral authorizations from Primary Care Physicians (PCP) to see other doctors or Specialists within the Network (usually In-state). The PPO plan has a wide Network like HMO. The PPO's advantage is it covers a member anywhere (out-of -state/ out of the Country) in cases of emergencies (with auth from the PPO network). The member's responsibility would be the co-insurance). Overall total would not exceed the $6000 limit per calendar year. I'm new to your videos & find them very educational. Thank you, & hope to see more videos. Take care.
My Humana Advantage Gold Plus is free. Why not? I had a hip replacement and only paid $650 for one night in the hospital. What is wrong with that? Almost all my drugs are free and others are dirt cheap. I don't know what there is to complain about! I enjoy your vlog very much. Salamat.
thank you grandpa, i’m not eligible yet for these but it’s great to learn all of these now. i will continue to learn more until i’m about 65. great info!
True Grandpa, my Mom lives in a small town in VA. She got Medicare Advantage and it keeps on dropping. Almost every year, her insurance changes. She got Humana PPO with 0 payment now and I hope it will stay this year. Thank you for the very useful information. I myself will be retiring in three yrs.
Very good information. My wife and I have the AARP United healthcare HMO Medicare advantage plan here in California. Our premiums are zero and copays are zero for most things. Her blood pressure meds are zero copay. We only travel to Vegas, Arizona and Philippines. We had Kaiser but the copays were so high.
Yup! Supplemental insurance is expensive. They cover a lot…especially if you have a ton of meds. We kept individual coverage through our former employers. $184,000 hospital bill for an open heart surgery covered almost all, except $2000, which Federal BCBS covered for the most part. $0 co-pay for prescription was a blessing once our catastrophic co-pay was met. Thinking of switching to advantage plan…will have to wait until open season. ♥️☕️🇺🇸🇵🇭
Thank you for explaining the difference of the : supplemental and the advantage plan. I have an appt. to see my insurance agent on Monday. I need to have a plan when i meet with him.
Hi, grandpa, I'm planning to retire in 2 years, age of 62. I still don't understand all of this medical insurance that I needed, my wife she on disability. She is only 56 years old; we live in northern California.
Rules may be different for disabled individuals. If you are not disabled, your medicare coverage will not start until you are 65. Meaning, you will have to find another policy to cover you from 62 to 65.
It’s important to discuss your health plan insurance with a qualified agent. Saving money should not be the determining factor. Protection of your health is more important. You get what you pay for..
Hello Grandpa thanks for your informative videos for the seniors. Can you please breakdown how one can get these advantage and Supplement. Example apply for Medicare then how to find these plans etc.
@B Asmal. There are many plans available in different neighborhoods in the U.S. I don't know them all. Please contact eHealth to find out what plans are available where you live. Here is a link to their website: www.ehealthinsurance.com/ .
You apply with ss office 3 months before 65 and tell them plan a or b, they take out $161 a month of your check, but to have discounted doctor and medicine fees, you must call a insurance company and buy that extra a month if you pick plan b , there no benofits for plan a. It will cost more extra per month $164 as total cost be $325 a month.
Thank you for the very informative video. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think I read that under my supplemental plan it would cover worldwide coverage for emergency hospital up to 80% within the first 60 days of travel, you would probably pay the hospital bill then apply for the 80% reimbursement upon returning to the US.
Sorry, I am not current on Supplemental Plans. I opted to get Advatage Plan because supplemental plans are too excessive although appropriate for certain individuals with chronic conditions.
Hi, Grandpa, can you give me a advice which healthcare fits to my condition. I am a diabetic -2 level.Right now i have a Scan Balance plan and taking lantus a day and ozempic once per week. thank you very much for help…
There are many, many plans available depending on where you live. Please consult with an insurance consultant. They have all those on computer due to the complexity. It is not possible for me to give you a recommendation.
I'm thinking about getting out of the Advantage HMO I don't like surprises. Sometimes doctors are in the network, then they are out network and you didn't realize it. Money out of your pocket. 😮 surprise
That's true. That's why some people would rather pay a lot of money for the Supplemental Plan. However, if you have conditions and staying in one location (meaning, not traveling a lot), that is just the initial pain. Meaning, after you have been in the plan for a while you will know how to go about everything--and save you A LOT of money than getting Supplemental Plan. It is not for everybody. You have to consider your own personal situation.
Trouble is you have to have B..150 bucks. Then you need another also. If you have the ability to talk with a dozen or more companies trying to make commissions.
You say Part A is free...yes...its then free at the moment one turns 65, BUT, it's not really free cuz one pays for Part A during his or her working career, thru payroll deduction.
I retired @ 63 and I have Blue Cross/Shield federal program. When I turn 65 I will enroll in Medicare A and B. Now is the Blue Cross/Shield considered a Supplemental plan or Advantage Plan. Will it serve as my gap plan.
Plan A is free. You have to have Plan B, which cost about $170, to enroll in an Advantage plan. The Advantage plN insurer has different plans with different premiums. Some may have zero premium. Thus, the total you should pay should be at least about $170 plus Advsntage plan which could be zero. Hope this is clear.
Can you explain a little more about optional on Medicare part B. If I don’t join part B when I’m 65. Will I get penalty when I come back and join part B later on?
at age 65 you're forced to get medicare, your tricare becomes "tricare for life" and act as secondary insurance paying the difference after medicare pays. If you are in CONUS of course you have lot more options ie: VA, MTFs, Medicare.
I have something for you to research. Now in my case if i’m staying in the states, i have tricare insurance, because i am military retired. I am 62 now so this would be good till i turn 65, which my primary tricare will switch to medicare and my tricare becomes supplemental automatically. Now since i reside in Guam now and intend to move to the Philippines after my retirement. I am on tricare overseas and since i will remain overseas, i will keep tricare overseas for the duration of my time overseas, why, because medicare will not cover you overseas. That’s why i will keep tricare overseas. Now cost is for tricare overseas $152 premium for the entire year. Then i have 25% responsible coverage. Tricare overseas the rest. With $150 deductible for the year. I have no serious underlying medical conditions now. Also if i need care with tricare i have access fully to the Naval Base Hospital for care in Guam. Then when i move to the Philippines i’ll have referral through the VA Hosp in Manila. And tricare overseas with cover me there.
Medicare does pay for usa perminate residents in philippines , i am retired usa citizen permniate resident in philippines. Im 64. And was usa military myself. Va doctors and hospitals is ok in usa but do not count on it out of usa. Even though usa purchased philippines, quam , and hawaii in 1898 from spain at end of the american spainish war and remodified them in 1952
Would it be hypothetically possible to have an Advantage plan and live full time in the Philippines? Wouldn’t the Advantage plan company drop you for not residing in the USA? I imagine one could use a relative’s address in the U.S., but that seems to potentially risk being dropped from the Advantage plan if discovered by the insurance company.
What is your opinion of paying for medicare as an expat who can not access the coverage, If yes, why? Can you sign up years after you are eligible for coverage without penalty or other burdens?
You have to consider having to pay a higher rate if and when you decide to re-enroll. Each year you are out of medicare Part B, the premium gets higher. And, you will need Part B to have Supplemental or Advantage Plan. Part A, of course, is free and mandatory. That is what you have to think about.
All nations that has visas for visiting from usa also accepts ss checks and medicare but not ssi and medicaid only good for the usa state of resodence not outside of usa.
i'm a bit confused about switching programs back and forth, there is no problem switching from Medicare Supplemental to Advantage, but may require undwerwriting if switching from Advantage to Supplemental - but why would a person want to switch from Advantage to Medicare if dialysis is required? Advantage programs are more costly for major issues such as dialysis and heart problems?
It is not a good idea to switch from Advantage to Supplemental if you have no major issues because it will not give you as much advantage as the Supplemental such as choice of doctor and coverage wherever you are IN THE U.S. Advantage is cheaper because it pays less benefit and you are limited to choice of doctor within your area. Thus, if you are traveling a lot and you have issues, it's not a good idea to choose Advantage. On the other hand, if you choose Advantage then you eventually developed major illness, it is very difficult to go to supplemental if you can go there at all. That's because you will be subjected to underwriting and if you already developed those major issues, you may not be accepted in. Hope this clarifies choices you may want to make.
@@vloggergrandpa2707 Thank you for the length explanation. But you mentioned that you are diabetic and yet you chose the affordable Advantage Plan instead of the more comprehensive Medicare Supplemental Plan?

Philhealth is available but it become bad in 2021 by not paying hospitals , etc. All insurance in usa not pay out of usa unless it travelers insurance , most time it cover you is 11 months then thats all.
Generally, no. They may allow you to use it in emergency situation during first 60 or 90 days as a traveling person. But check your policy because each one is different.
Hi, want to ask since I'm retiring July 2023 at 65+ yo but my wife will still work for about 5 more years, I already have medicare part A, can I be under her insurance? And not have part b or advantage or supplemental plan?
Part A (hospitalization) is mandatory which you don't pay for. Yes, you can be exempt from Part B but be sure you are covered under Part B as soon as she terminates your insurance.
Ss told me it take $161 a month out my check every month for just plan a no benifits, then the plan b adalvanage be aseperate cost of $164 a month , thats total $325 a MONTH
Sir I'm stay to my original Medicare only cover for 60 day if your in the Philippines. but can I buy Philippines insurance and keep my Medicare? While I'm in the Philippines?
When you are out of the US, your original Medicare will not work at all even for few days. But you can buy Philippine insurance while in the Philippines. Medicare Part A will continue to stay with you, but you have to continue paying for Part B if you want continued coverage although you can't use it while outside the US.
@@vloggergrandpa2707 I was shopping for the Phil medical insurance as my aunt is ready to retire sa Pinas 2 yrs ago. It was very expensive. The older you are, the cost will go up. I remember, it was like 3KUS$
I know it is expensive...for the amount of coverage they're giving you. That's why I was so happy to find Advantage Plan with worldwide coverage even if it only covers you for emergency situation. And that is all I wanted anyway. The cost of medical services in the Philippines is really inexpensive except for catastrophic illnesses.
You have no education, medicare is insurance period for people paid in taxes every week for years and years like 45 years every week. It not for kids or someone not worked for many years.

@@vloggergrandpa2707 thank you. You help me a lot
Gee what is the Advantage plan you found that covers you worldwide gpa?
Medicare is socialized medicine for old people.
That is a silly coment
You have no education, medicare is insurance period for people paid in taxes every week for years and years like 45 years every week. It not for kids or someone not worked for many years.
$150 one time??? or a month???? on plan b
