I've been a ham for 44 years but an active SWBC and MW DX'er for nearly 50. I have the original CC Radio which is/was capable of TV reception. It has the common, missing digits in the display problem which I thought I'd corrected with what appeared to be a permanent fix but it was not to be. It's up for another trip to my workshop soon for another try. Winter evenings with a good radio tuning the MW band = a lot of fun ! Tuning the MW or SW bands on a winter evening with a tube radio such as an R390A or Hammarlund SP-600 giving off "that smell" of warm tubes = nirvana. You've done some great reviews plus, I envy your knowledge of the MW band, stepping through it. I'm very near the coast so on a really good night, I can hear a few TA outlets from Spain, BBC Radio 4 on 1215 or Saudia Arabia, 1521 all around Sunset. Well done and a pleasure to watch and hear.

    C.Crane has another winner❗️
Some people have said that C.Crane is junk: When they first came out, there was a problem with the display. It would “ Pack- up”( quit working).(( There’s an easy fix for that- on UA-cam))
C.Crane spends months and years designing/ developing, and testing their radios.
Only Sangean comes close to C.Crane quality ( And-Sangean actually makes these for C.Crane). I have 2 of their radios, ( CCSkywaveSSB, and a 13 year old CCPocket. I had the CCSWRadio too but it got damaged, pretty bad but it still worked).
So, anyone thinking about getting this, GO FOR IT‼️

CCrane could make it perfect by adding RDS, HD, SW and maybe a MicroSD card slot for MP3

Great sounding radio, but for those also looking for ham radio and more interesting things to listen to, get one of their models that has Shortwave and SSB bands, you will find lots of activity nightly from 3.6 to 4mhz on LSB. You'll find tons of groups talking in t his freq range with even a halfwave decent indoor antenna, all over the USA. This band is also less sensitive to sunspot cycles, so it's pretty active pretty much every night.

Got mine yesterday. Much better on MW than the EP-Pro. Nice to be able to listen to sports radio 400 mi. away without station fading in and out, like it does on my Sangean RCR-20. Reception was improved by doing the factory re-alignment out of box as per Jay Allen's recco. Thanks for reviewing this and doing a fine job with all your reviews Pete.

Absolute nonsense. This radio is equal, not better on MW than the ep pro. In fact, the antenna and circuitry are the same. The ep pro is far superior on FM. This guy has probably never touched an ep pro. If you are only interested in tuning MW and FM, and don't need all the bells and whistles, the ep pro is the best MW tuner currently available.

My C. Crane CC-3 is not as hot as my EP-Pro.
My EP-Pro performs much better on both AM and FM. Seems there are to many variances from unit to unit with the C. Crane CC-3 and CC-2E. Not sure as to why.
I have many radios, and to me, all the reviews on the C. Crane CC-3/CC-2E are over blown. I have at least 4 other radios that are better, and don't cost anywhere near $210.

    • @heatherphilips9227
      @heatherphilips9227 Рік тому

@usta4070 If you are not trying to be sarcastic, and this is a serious question, they are as follows.
      For shear FM performance
      C.C Radio EP Pro
      Eton Elite Field
      Sangean PR-D5
      Tecsun PL-990X
      For AM/medium wave performance
Panasonic RF-2200 (some could be had for about the same price)
      C.C radio EP pro
      Sangean PR-D5
      GE super Radio 2
I agree with Jay Allen on most of his tests, but the C.C radio 2E / 3 just are not 5 star radios when it comes to performance. With that said, there are "hot" radios out there, but to far and in between to really "gauge" how many, and most importantly, why beyond factory inconsistency.
I like my C.C radio 3, such as the digital tuning, smooth tuning dial, the "old school" pots for bass, volume and treble, but it also looks like a "toy". The 5" speaker is very nice ( and viewable), but its the same one used in the EP Pro (which is more difficult to see). With what you pay for this radio, there should be more options and perks to pull away from the pack.
Ability to ( a switch) to disconnect the internal ferrite antenna, when using an external for AM dxing
Let the "user" "fine tune" the twin ferrite antenna like on the EP pro. Auto is nice to have, but for those that want to tinker (and have manual control), its a feature
FM antenna should be longer (like the one on the EP Pro), and easier to access.
Antenna and RF gain switches or pots for local, Normal, and DX.
Bandwidth select from 2.0 to 6.0khz for those that want to fine tune there AM DXing hobby
Let the "user" control the display and light manually, for however long they want. The display going to the clock after 15 seconds is for the birds.
Redesign the top of the radio to reflect this is a "premium" machine, and not a toy.
And for last but not least, give us a "handle". I real handle. NOT like what the EP Pro got either.
BTW...Your question was removed while I was responding...
"What are those 4 better radios you mention"

For the weather radio alerts, can you choose which alerts to receive? I have an older weather radio from Radio Shack that does just that, so I can choose to turn off more minor alerts such as Thunderstorm Watch, etc. I'm glad that this radio lets you choose HOW to be alerted. I was JOLTED out of bed by my RS weather radio one night when it sounded the LOUD SIREN for a flood WATCH! I almost had a heart attack! (I had since turned that and similar notifications off.)

    • @DG-kq8zf
      @DG-kq8zf Місяць тому

@davidcassoday5932 good question. The only small one of there's I've bought is the skywave ssb. The speaker design looks the same on that, and the pocket. So, my guess is that whoever makes the skywave makes the pocket, also. My only complaint with the skywaves is the antenna length. I was mountain camping in a canyon, middle of nowhere (hells gate campground, near hayfork, cal. For curiosity sake) and I could only pick up one fm station from Eureka. I added about 10 inches of tin foil and BOOM! I was getting many stations from Eureka AND Redding. If the fm circuitry happens to be the same, great. I ended up just installing a longer telescopic antenna I bought on Amazon. I do know that old man crane wouldn't design and sell a radio he wouldn't buy himself. I think his predecessors are the same. It's still the same vibe when I go in there. Nothing changed.

Thanks, as always, Todderbert, for all your hard work for us radio fans. As you demonstrate, this is a terrific radio for listening to the news or any kind of talk program or voice broadcast. (I believe C. Crane promotes the Radio 3 as being tuned specifically for voice.) For music, though, it's not so hot, especially given the radio's relatively hefty size. The treble and bass controls are helpful, but if one listens to both music and the news (as I do) , the sound can be less than ideal. It would be nice if in a future iteration they could add a switch that could toggle between a richer sound for music and a clearer sound for talk. That said, I keep this in my kitchen and have used it every day since it arrived a few months ago.

Superb review, as usual. However, one question has not been addressed by any reviewer or by C.-Crane: Does the "3" have the twin-coil A.M. antenna that the "2E" has or not. I don't see this being addressed either by C-crane or any reviews so far. The brief glimpse of the specs in the instruction manual you showed shows the "3" having only one A.M. rod antenna.
Bluetooth may be nice but, frankly, I would prefer more selectivity and sensitivity over the Bluetooth any day of the week. That's what A.M. DX'ing is all about!

Here's how to fix this radio rather than send it back to Crane for repair after multiple years of ownership:
If you experience button problems which act like computer chip malfunctions, like preset buttons that instead, change to a different band.
Get a good de-oxidation spray like De-oxit. While unplugged, take the 5-6 screws out which are clearly marked in the back of the radio. Don't forget the screw in the batt compartment. Once the back is off, disconnect the wire connecting the back to the smaller circuit board inside. (just jiggle the white connector, it will come out of it's socket). Next, the speaker wire stays put, which connects the back to the inside and will still give you a little room to work with the spray can. Now point the spray at the top of the radio and spray those top buttons good. Spray the front of the radio buttons by aiming the can under the circuit board. Work the buttons while still wet. Re-assemble and don't forget to reconnect that white wire to it's harness clip. Now it should be fine like mine. Have fun.

Good review! To me this is the ultimate talk radio. Excellent AM reception and sound on voice. The excellent sound with voice is perfect for podcasts which I listen to a lot. I tried the Eton Field radio last summer and I really liked it for reception quality and speaker sound on voice. However the radio volume is limited especially on Bluetooth. I am a CoasttocoastAM insider so I can download the shows and I like to listen to them though Bluetooth. Had to turn the Eton Field radio full blast just to hear. So I sent it back. I am still a CoasttocoastAM insider as I can't listening past 12AM very often. Have plenty of volume through this radio. I have figured out how to do C2CAM insider through my Podcast Republic app on my phone (Samsung). I like it this way better than the C2CAM app. AM sound quality of the CCradio 3 is rivaled only by the Tivoli Model 1 in my collection. AM reception has no rival in my collection. This is the ideal Kitchen/Back porch radio for my family. 73
P.S. Received my Tecsun PL-330 radio yesterday from Anon-co. It does have the new 3305 firmware. Had a blast with it and played with it most of the day. Speaker sound quality is significantly better than my CCSkywave. Not much bigger LxW than the CCSkywave and considerably thinner than the CCSkywave. So I would say same size class overall. SSB performance is significantly better than my Grundig G6 which is also same size class. Listened to Art Bell Somewhere in Time last night on 1110 KFAB here in Omaha on the PL-330 and it was a real pleasure. On this Art Bell show Ed Dames was talking about remote viewing Satan. Entertaining listen to say the least.

On battery, it will distort with heavy bass, as it’s only output is 900mv, but on A/C, it’s 1.9 watts. The speaker is quite tough, it can take up to 6 watts, but the radio will never hit power output unless you try to push it to the distorted range, then you WILL damage the speaker.

I'm not sure what all the hype is about with the C. Crane CC-3/CC-2E. To me, its an above average radio, but surely not worth what C.Crane wants for it, nor does the performance equal the asking price.
I have this radio, and so far, its good, but not as good as its little brother, the C. Crane EP pro. I paid $90 for the EP pro and $210 for the C. Crane CC-3. For shear performance though, the EP Pro walks my CC-3 in both AM and FM performance. I know there are a few "hot" units out there, but the EP pro is the one to get, if you are a DXer.
So, how did i compare the two...? We have a station here in the Bay area, that comes in from the central coast. It is weak (102.5 KDON @ 15kW and transmits from Fremont Peak park), but fills the south valley with approximate 51-60 dBu signal, at my particular location.
I tune to the station (while holding the radios in the same location), but leave the antennas down. The noise floor for the EP Pro is lower, and so, if I put the radio down, I could listen to it. My C. Crane CC-3 has a higher noise floor, and so, static is very present and can be overwhelming to the signal.
I understand that the C. Crane CC-3 antenna is vertical when fully down, and the EP pro has a horizontal antenna. I negate this by rotating the C. Crane CC-3 as so the antenna is horizontal (no change).
I'm sorry, but my C. Crane CC-3 is also not as good on AM as its little brother either. I tune to 1040 (WHO), which is very weak out here on the west coast. The C. Crane CC-3, again has a higher noise floor, which makes it difficult to hear it at times. With the EP Pro, I can hear much better.
Other radios (I personally have) that are better than the C. Crane CC-3/CC-2E on FM are as follows
    Sangean PR-D5
    Eton Elite Field/Field BT
There are to many units that have quality issues, including variances of performance. Its like rolling the dice, and hoping you get a double six ( AKA "hot unit" ).

@@todderbert I think you might have a "hot" radio. Most of them, unfortunately, can barely hear stations outside there local area. I've done extensive testing with mine (Hell, I paid over $200 for this radio, I'm going to see what it can do), and its not as great -on both AM and FM - as I've been lead to believe. Realistically, this is any above average radio, but not top tier. Like I said, its a roll of the dice if you get your hands on a "hot" unit. To many quality inconsistency's from unit to unit, to really gauge if this radio is all hype or all fluff. let me say this, if you are a DXer, and like to hear radio stations way out in the mud, the EP pro should fill that niche just fine. If you have the $$$, and want to go fancier, get the CC-3, but don't expect miracles.
I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Panasonic RF-2200. They are fantastic radios (and beautiful to). The performance on MW is unbelievable on a fully aligned radio. FM is great, but I haven't tested FM as much as the AM & shortwave performance. I like the RF-2200 so much, I have two of them.

Hi, I just came across your video while researching emergency radios. I used to live in Michigan, but am now in Indiana, so the only way I can get WJR is through Internet radio feeds. I was waiting eagerly to see if you would pass by 760 and you did - and it was playing a Michigan State basketball game, which is why I want access to that channel here in Indiana. Last night I couldn't listen to our MSU announcers during the NCAA tournament game because it was blacked out. WJR came in loud and clear on your radio! Another reason I have been interested in this type of radio is for the HAM channels. I am not a HAM operator, but have always been interested in the idea because of many years listening to Art Bell. He also regularly promoted C. Crane so I was happy to find this review. Aside from wanting to hear WJR, I was waiting to hear the HAM stations but I didn't hear anything. Are the HAM stations for emergencies only? I was thinking we could hear regular conversations as well. Periodically, I look into how to get started as a HAM operator but always feel overwhelmed by what I read. Anyway, thank you for your review, and for helping me get one step closer to buying this radio. I am still looking into radios that offer the AM/FM and weather alerts that this one does, but am also very interested in being able to hear HAM operators. I don't know if such a radio exists, but maybe someone who reads this and knows could offer advice? Thanks!

    • @todderbert

The HAM on the CC Radio 3 are 2m users. Usually local repeaters are what you tune into. You will hear them on their commutes, in the mornings and afternoons. If you want international HAMs you will need a Shortwave radio with SSB. C.Crane has the smaller Skywave SSB: ua-cam.com/video/5dQ3FWrBkmE/v-deo.html . It is more of a ultra portable, than a desktop style. You do get weather alerts on it, and also the AIR band as well. Fun little receiver. Personally, I would go with a dedicated Weather Radio for Home Use. Then a nice Shortwave Receiver such as a Tecsun PL-990, Eton Elite Executive, ect.

The Sangean PR-D15 / 5 are very good radios. I have a "hot" unit I purchased at Fry's electronics a few years back. Mine is the PR-D5. My only gripe (as of this writing) is the sound and amplification. Its not loud enough when I'm DXing very distant stations on MW. With that said, the noise floor on these little radios is extremely low, so hearing those distant stations (albeit lower volume) is much easier to dig them out.

A fine radio with amazing performance -- when it works, but the CCRadio 2 and 2E have buttons that become intermittent after a few years. I'm on my third CCRadio 2/2E and the current 2E won't even turn on now because of the intermittent power switch. For this reason I consider the CCRadio 2 and 2E "throw away" radios.

The switches are constructed in a way that doesn't allow cleaning with spray cleaners. I've read of others who also have this switch problem, too. On my 2E the preset buttons are very intermittent and rarely work while the front panel buttons still respond much of the time. It seems the outside always stays exactly the same over the years every modification is always something inside or they add something to the inside . They know many want an FM external connection but Crane has never attempted to offer that . They know that thousands and thousands are furious at the LCD screen and non responsive button issues that the CC radio's develop after the 1 year warranty runs out but they have done absolutely nothing to correct it . C crane has said those issues are with the older radio's but that's a lie , more than a few electronic guru's have taken the radio's apart and confirmed that the newer model radio's have the same mediocre quality components that the past radio's have had , totally unacceptable.
That's no exaggeration on my part either, there are a ton of complaints all over the internet even to this day about the CCradio2E STILL suffering from major reliability issues that have plagued this radio going back many many years . The fact that C crane has admitted that the CCradio3 is the same radio just with added bluetooth and jacked it's price $30.00 to an already grossly overpriced radio is truly pathetic .
The fact that the outside of this radio never changes leads me to believe that Sangean will not permit a change in the actual button type or functions. The changes to this radio seems to only be things that you can add WITHOUT changing any of it's inherent attributes and construction of the radio which is extremely disappointing . That's what it seems like to me at least.
