Wildlife Videography GH5 and Lumix G Vario 100-300mm II Lens

- How well does the GH5 and Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II lens work for wildlife videography. Come along with me while I visit several of my favorite places in Florida to shoot video and stills. I'll tell you why I shoot 4K/60 video and how well the autofocus on the GH5 works for video. This is a two part video with the first part being a review of the GH5 and 100-300mm II lens and the second part is more video that I shot on this trip. The alligators are at the end of the video if you like seeing alligators. I also have a list of the locations I visited at the end. I hope you enjoy it.

I was concerned about this lens because I've heard it has obvious (potentially bad) chromatic aberration, but your video looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.
This problem seems to be on Olympus bodies, the Panasonic bodies fix the problem in camera through software.
Great video and narration. It's amazing the variety of birds and wildlife you have captured in one video. I suspect not many shots escape you with the ability to hand hold a 200-600mm equivalent lens. I use the 100-300 II, and it's a great option for video with G9.
I hand hold a lot of stills and some video but I also use a tripod when I can. The one thing I tell people doing nature photography is slow down and look carefully. You would be amazed at what you have been missing. You need a lot of patience to photograph wildlife. Thanks for watching.

A beautiful footage and great commentary, especially for nature lovers. I do not have GH5, but I know that I need to know the capabilities of my camera and enjoy that I can record memories and the beauty of our nature. I could not take my Sigma 150-600 to Cuba, because due to weight I have to use it with monopod, and not to feel awkward with size of bazooka lens.
The GH5 is a great camera for travel. Even with the 100-300mm lens it is very small compared to a full frame or APSC equivalent DSLR and lens. With the 14 -140mm lens, which is 28-280mm on the GH5, it is really a small rig and can be used on a lighter travel tripod. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for this footage. I have a Panasonic G85 and I think I'll invest in this lens. As a side note, you should do wildlife videos with music. I really enjoyed your commentary on the animals as much as the footage.
Really enjoyed the video and my cat enjoyed it even more than me, especially the alligators. Thankfully she is unlikely to come across one in the UK.
Well, I'm glad your cat enjoyed it too. My cats just sleep and could care less. Most of these wetland areas I go to do not allow pets for that very reason. They could end up being a snack for a gator. Thanks for watching.

I have a G7 and a G9. I have the Panasonic 100-300 II and just got the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm.... I also have the 14-140mm...... I take mostly stills of birds. The 100-300mm and the 14-140mm are amazing at lower weight, but the additional reach of the 100-400mm is worth the weight.
Sorry for the late reply William. I have not tried the 100-400mm Leica but I'm sure it's spectacular. For most of my stills I now shoot the Sony A7RIII with a 100-400mm GM lens but I still love my GH5. It's the most fun camera I own.

How do you avoid the typical jitter problem when shooting video on the GH5? I am a wildlife photographer myself, work also with GH5 and the Lumix 100-300, but ALL my recordings of moving or flying animals have jitter, or little stabilizer kind of shocks and are un-usable. Which ever stabilization mode i use, or whatever video recording/resolution setting. It drives me completely crazy. How did you solve the jitter problem? I am really curious. Hope you can help me out. Thanks.
I have never had a serious jitter problem with the GH5. I use a tripod most of the time but I have shot it hand held many times. I generally try to rest it on something because it is very hard to hold a 600mm lens steady for very long. Even a lighter weight lens like the Lumix 100-300mm. I really struggle with my new Sony gear and the Sony 200-600mm G lens. It is significantly heavier and almost impossible to hold steady at 600mm. If you shoot hand held then try shooting on a tripod and see if that eliminates the jitter. If it doesn't, you may have an issue with the GH5. I have found that even just touching the camera or lens at 600mm can make your video unusable. Even with the heavier Sony A7RIV and the 200-600mm G lens on a tripod I have to be real careful not to touch the camera if I am not panning or tilting. At that much zoom it is, for me, impossible to even keep my hand on the camera or lens without making it jiggle a little. I fight it every time I go out, especially in the wind. The lens hood acts light a sail. Thanks for watching.
Wow, impressive. I have recently acquired the Gh5 and same lens, but have not achieved such on point focus and clarity yet. ND filter? Tripod or IS Lock? Natural profile? I'm guessing tripod. Really nice stuff! That bird in flight shot is amazing by the way! (I love Apopka wildlife drive and Orlando wetlands park, kind of a bummer that they are still doing major dredging, etc on that main cell still, but I know it's necessary)
Just a suggestion, use the Panasonic Image app , it really is worth it's weight in gold for smoothness . and free for us Pannies !

Hi.
I want to get more into wildlife photography. I got a Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600mm C, but I’m not too happy with the sharpness. I’m considering the Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 400mm f/5.6L USM, but I’m not sure if the Canon 7D Mark II can produce nice pictures at ISO’s to about 2000. My Canon 6D produces very noisy pictures at ISO 1600.
Noise is not one of the 7D Mark II's best selling points. It is far better than the original 7D but still not great above about ISO 800. I shot the Blood Moon with the 7D2 at about ISO 800-1600 but I had to denoise it in Photoshop. If you plan on shooting at that high of an ISO on a regular basis it may not be for you. It doesn't do to bad with Astrophotography because you can keep the blacks down enough to hide it. Thanks for watching.
Great vid, RC. I assume you used a tripod? I could not tell the size of the camera & lens, though. I have never seen a GH5 in person. I wonder how this compares to the Sony RX10M4 with its 1-inch sensor and 600mm equivalent f/4 lens. Take care!
I have not held the RX10IV but it looks like it is a smaller camera than the GH5. It is larger than the Sony early A7 and A7II line of cameras mainly due to the size of the battery. The GH5 shoots excellent 4k/60 and 4K/30 video but since I have not shot with the Sony I don't want to compare them. I never want to mislead anyone so I only talk about gear I have used. BTW, Yes, I used a tripod most of the time but the flying Spoonbill was hand held and other shots I did not use a tripod but steadied the camera against something. It is tough to hold a 600mm lens stable even with the excellent IBIS the GH5 has.
How does this camera size up to a hc-vx870k Panasonic 4k camcorder ? And I imagine the low light is better on the micro 4 3rds ?
I’ve never used the camcorder so I can’t compare the two cameras. I can only say the GH5 is a good video camera. The micro 4/3 sensors are better in low light but the technology has improved so much since the GH5 was made the newer full frame cameras are still better. The megapixel count will give you more noise. My 61 megapixel Sony A7RIV is extremely noisy at higher ISO’s. Thanks for watching.
I have got the exact same rig as your start the video, it's a bit of a beast x 2 ain't it ! I am not a huge fan of flock motion or stills I prefer the individual subject and to beautify the detail. Great post and excellent info. Spose i'll have to sub ! ;-) .... Yes a rebuild PC is a must , I have upped to a I7 and a GTX1080 and my next will have to be water cooled , a lot miss the need for processing after the event. The Image app can do amazing things .. have you tried it ?
The GH5 is a great 4K video camera and a pretty good stills camera. The noise is a problem in low light but it's still a great camera. I recently switched from Canon to a Sony A7RIII for full frame but I still think the GH5 is the most fun camera I've shot in a long time. Thanks for watching.
I am very much interested in bird photography/videography, and your video is compelling for me to choose the micro four-thirds system. I wonder, did you shoot these bird videos with tripod or hand-held? If you use a tripod, do you turn on image stabilization?
kirk0831 - I shoot both on a tripod and handheld. A lot of the video was handheld. Sometimes I rest the GH5 on top of my Canon 100-400mm lens attached to my 7DII and on a tripod. I can’t easily carry two tripods so resting the camera on something helps steady the camera. The GH5 also has great stabilization. I rarely turn the stabilization off.

It's a light camera but I still used it with a tripod for video when I could. Even with the 600mm equivalent lens it is still nothing compared to a full frame camera and lens as far as weight goes. I used the GH5 all the time handheld and it was easy to control because of the light weight. I can't hold my Sony A7RIV and 200-600mm lens for video. It's just too heavy to hold still. Especially zoomed in to 600mm. It even makes me sick looking in the viewfinder. I'm all over the place. Thanks for watching.

You mention that your MkII 100-300 is much better optically than your old MkI. I always thought the differences were mainly faster autofocus, Power OIS (vs Mega) + Dual IS compatibility and weather sealing but that optically, they ere the same. Can you explain what you mean by "better optically"?
Hi Alain, Sorry for the late reply but sometimes I get snowed under. I can only speak for the copy of the Mark I that I have but the resolution with the Mark II is noticeably better as well as the AF improvement. It was well worth spending the money for the Mark II.

Hi, I have the same lens, and trying to see if there is a teleconverter (like 1.4 or 2.0) that would be compatible to get a little extra reach. Any idea?
Hi Justin, Panasonic sell both a 1.4X and 2X teleconverter but I have never used one. I am not a fan of teleconverters on full frame cameras and I think they would be worse on micro 4/3 cameras. I rarely use my 2X for my Canon and only occasionally use the 1.4X. I would try one if possible before you buy it to see if it will do what you want. I found I lost too much resolution for my liking. I found it was no better than cropping the image in post in most instances.
I have recently started shooting with the Sony A7RIII as my main camera but I still carry the GH5 wherever I go. I have the 14-140mm on it and use it for video when I need a wide shot. I carry my Sony 28-70 for landscape pictures and video and the Sony 100-400mm GM lens for the birds and wildlife video and stills. I have found that the GH5 shoots 4K video that is hard to tell from the A7RIII. It is still my favorite camera to shoot. Thanks for watching.
There's no teleconverter for this lens. However, Panasonic does have other options. Their 1.4X and 2X teleconverters fit their 50-200mm f2.8-4.0 and 200mm f2.8 Leica lenses. There's also the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm f4.0-6.3 zoom, but the teleconverters do not work with it.
You can also hop over to the Olympus side of the fence. The 40-150mm f2.8 and 300mm f4.0 PRO lenses from Olympus are compatible with a 1.4X and 2X teleconverter. However, you can't use a Panasonic teleconverter on an Olympus lens, and vice versa.

kirk0831 - I do not have any stills or video on a stock image web site but all of my images and videos are for sale.
Great video! Thank you for sharing it. I'll leave video for pros like you. I want to get better stills and I know that I'll either have to get something better than my canon 80d, or replace my disappointing efs lenses. Ibis is best suited to the mft cameras due to physics. Sony a73 is not for me.
Lenses can make a big difference and believe me I struggled with the price myself but it does make a big difference. The 400mm f/5.6 prime is a great lens for a good price, especially used. It is very sharp. I have a video where I compare them. Watch that and you'll see what I mean. The drawbacks are no zoom and no IS but it is very sharp if you get one in good condition. It has been out for a long time but it is as sharp as my much newer 100-400mm Version II lens. Just make sure to get a good one from a reputable source. Thanks for watching.
What's the best wildlife camera in $2000.
The Unlimited Masti - it depends on what you want to shoot. Do you want to shoot stills or video or both? Are you looking for a DSLR or mirrorless? If you only want to spend $2,000 for a camera and lens that's difficult. The lens is as important as the camera body.

@@plabonkun732 - If you need to shoot ISO 2,000 then the 7D Mark II would not be a good choice. If you shoot a lot of birds a crop sensor camera works better because you get a little more reach out of your lens. If full frame is okay then I would look at maybe the A7III. I hate to recommend anything I have not used myself and I have not shot with the A7III in real life. So I would see if you can rent one before you buy it and try it out shooting the way you want to shoot. Only you will know if it is good enough. The APSC A6400 was just released so you might try that as well. It's under $1,000.
60fps is a nightmare to watch
