All really good and great advice. Sadly, I've never had a support crew, but my experience is, that if things have turned bad, people and other runners in general are really helpful and supportive at the stations.

Switched registration from 100k to 100 miles while on a runners high 1 month out from the race. This vid seems to be helpful, we’ll see how race day goes haha.
Brilliant series of vids Loyd . Very informative , and explained in a very clear and positive manner. I'm looking to enter longer distance events next year , as my furthest ultra distance ive completed to date is 32 miles. The points I particularly remember are the benefits of back to back running in building endurance ; the "witching hour" during night-time running & the importance of a quality headtorch ; and how useful it would be to "buddy up" in the night-time during a 100 miler. I intend to enter the solo CQ next year & then the Plague , so fingers crossed for that , and I will certainly give your vids another play during my training. Stay safe mate & I will see you on the other side.
Thanks Paul Really glad you enjoyed it and you found it useful 👍 I'm a big fan of the CQ, it's a great race on a beautiful route! The Plague is a great 100k, it is challenging for sure but the support you get out on route is second to none, you'll love it! Hope you and the family are managing to stay safe and well, catch up soon hopefully 🙏
Hi loyd. I’ve only done one 100 miler. But wot a feeling crossing that finish line. Loved running through the nite especially hearing the Dawn chorus as the sunrises. Wot I found was it was never my megs that we’re going to stop me but the dreaded blisters so very important to get them sorted at the first sign of any rubbing in theses shoes 👍🏻👍🏻
It sure is an amazing feeling, it's hard to explain the feeling to anyone that hasn't experienced it 😊 Which 100 have you done? Wise words about blisters, you really need to deal with them quickly 👍 Thanks for watching.
Run 4 Adventure my first 100 miler was last year from Wembury in south Devon to Lynmouth in North Devon across the two moors way for climb southwest 👍🏻👍🏻
I noticed an old video and I’m not sure if you’re gonna see it but maybe somebody will question is terrain. I see a few that I got to choose from one that’s probably out it’s a like a Greenway sidewalk cement path 50 miles out and 50 miles back that don’t seem fun even though it goes out through the country I got another one about 11,000 feet gain they say it’s pretty mostly runnable And in 425 mile loop and another one like 18,000 feet a game much harder and it’s only got a 30 hour cut off because that’s the only one negative there and another one is one of the hardest ones in our state with the 47 hour cut off in about 25,000 feet again through rocksdoes it really matter first I’ve had people tell me both they said, will you pick a mountain one to force you to walk and then other people said well you can schedule a walk you know every 4 miles or something walk for so much time on a flat one, so it doesn’t matter or whatever I enjoy most or but probably just stay out of the way from the real brutal ones that’s all bye. Thanks love the videos.
Glad you’re enjoying the channel Todd! I personally would always recommend making your fist 100 miler as easy as possible (100 miles is tough every time 🙂) I’d go for the looped option. My first 100 miler was on a looped route and it was really positive because you always had other runners around and you got to see your crew every loop. Completing 100 miles the first time is definitely challenging so I’d always recommend the flatter, less challenging race 👍 Hope this helps and best of luck! Loyd
Just found this video and the others in the series. My question is how many miles should you be building to before the actual 100m event. The 100km vid suggested back to back runs so I am assuming a similar training regime but at what point do you say 'these distances are sufficient to prepare my body for what's ahead?' Cheers from Australia
Back to back runs are definitely a good idea if you're training for you first 100 miler 👍 As far as distance goes when it comes to your training it is quite personal. I personally wouldn't do a training run longer than marathon distance these days. Distances over that can take a long time to recover from so it can be counter productive. I think the milage we run in training building towards our first 100 miler is all about preparing you physically but also mentally for the challenge ahead. If you think you need to run 100 miles a week in training to be ready then that's the right amount but if you think you can complete the distance off 50 miles a week, then that's enough. However, I would say be careful of over training, it's very common when runners are training for their first 100 miler, don't over do it! Hope this helps and best of luck with the training and your race 💪 Thanks for watching 🙏 Loyd
@@Run4AdventureLoyd so appreciate you taking the time to reply. Your recommendations make so much sense - cheers. I'm now 52. Ran my one and only ultra 10yrs ago. North Face 100km in the Blue mountains Australia. Loved it but over trained and blew out my ITB 30km in. Still finished though. Walked the back 70 :) Now 10 years older and back running once more but keen to keep my body holding together. All the best mate and thank you once again.
I don’t film in 4k because it takes up to much space on our hard drives. Its also slower to edit because it can be glitchy on our software. I do some colour correction if needed 👍
thank you man very informative video, ive ran a few 50 milers but I want to complete my first 100. what shoes do you use? they seem to be some zero drop and I'm used to running in vibram 5 fingers lol
Awesome, really glad you found it helpful 👍 No I don't run in zero drop shoes, they don't really work for me! I tend to spend most of my time in the Saucony Peregrine 10 or the Hoka Torrent 2. Both shoes run off a 4mm off set 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
Great series! some helpful advice for sure. I'm eyeing up my first 100miler, one thing I've dealt with in my 50mile and 100km efforts has been shin splints, I notice you have taped your shins/calves in the last couple videos and I wonder if its for similar issues? Can you speak to your experience with taping as a preventative measure?
Awesome Wyatt I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍 I use the tape on my shins as a prevention. It helps with drainage and circulation in the lower leg. A lot of shin pain isn't always shin splints, it can be down to tention in the lower leg muscle groups. Lots of stretching, foam rolling, taping and sports massage can really help 😊 I'm going to do a video on taping soon so hopefully that will help. Thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏
@@Run4Adventure Totally, my "shin splints" are as best I have figured out, due to my calf muscle pulling too hard and sort of overpowering my anterior tibialis, which sounds like what you're talking about! Foam rolling/massage has been my go to solution. I would love to see a video on taping, as it could really help me! Thanks for making great running content! cheers
@@wyattstevens7366 No problem and thanks watching the channel 👍 Hopefully the taping videos will be on the channel soon! 😊 I don't know if you've watched our short film called "The Pirate"? Thanks and they're Gore twin skin shorts. I've had them for years and they're still going strong. Gore make some quality kit that's for sure. I just about to start filming a short series focusing on running kit. We've got some great products to review from some brands you might not of come across before. First episode should go out next week 👍
...also, what water proof jacket would you recommend ? I bought a few and even a pretty expensive one from OMM for 150 but still seems to hold water on it.... Should i go for a complete gore tex one as the 20,000 (something unit) does nt do job for me. Thanks
Hi there Most running waterproof jackets will only protect you for so long because they have to be breathing, lightweight and packable. Unfortunately a Gortex pro shield would definitely keep you totally dry but you would cook in it and they're a lot heavier and bulkier to carry! Sometimes it can be down to fit as well, if your jacket is to big it can pool water where the jacket gathers up? It's tricky and there will always be compromise. Hope this helps and thanks again for watching the channel 🙏
Run 4 Adventure i never really thought about the breathabilty factor - plus I may be putting the jacket under too much pressure when testing out in a shower!
Hi there I suffer with poor circulation in my lower leg. The tape lifts the skin over the muscles and helps with drainage and flow 👍 The Wildhorse is pretty good but it does have a few flaws. I'll be doing a 200 mile review in a few weeks 😊 Thanks for watching the channel 🙏
Another great video Loyd, 👍🏻 love the channel, any chance you could do a video on basic self gait analysis for those who don’t have the opportunity to get it done by a professional?
Hi mate Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching 🙏 Unfortunately it's not really possible to do that? I know some online companies come up with crazy things we can do at home to "check" our running gaits, but it's all a load of rubbish. You really need to go to a good running shop and get it done properly and even then there's a lot of placing saying they offer gait analysis and what they're doing is a joke! 😠 I'd like to do something but it's tricking 😊
Run 4 Adventure 🤣🤣 thing is I’m slowly getting back to running again after my groin injury and don’t want to aggravate it again by wearing the “wrong” shoes 🙈
