It could be cool if along the way you could find an animal companion just to yo the feeling, possible animals could be a deer, wolf, beaver, or maybe even a Pallas's cat since they live in mountains in Siberia. Even if this doesn't get added, I'm really excited to see how this turns out
Here are some suggestions for your game:- • UPGRADES- Like Choo-choo Charles, you can upgrade the train's wheels (increase speed), armor (increase health of the train), furnace (improves mileage by using less fuel but covering more distance), etc. These upgrades can be done by acquiring items like iron, copper, wood, stone, etc. The coal car can also be upgraded to hold more coal. You can even upgrade your own armor. • BEARS AND OTHER ANIMALS- Bears are found in snowy places...and they kill....and are Russian. Bears can spawn anywhere on the map and roam around until they are a close proximity from the player, in which case they attack the player and damage the train. Bears have large amounts of health but have a slow attack speed. The horn/whistle does attract bears though. Other animals such as hogs can be added which serve as a food source for the player. • VARIETIES OF WEAPONS- Bears and hogs are nasty and irritating, and you need to kill them. Although humans are weak, they do have brains. Craftable weapons like knives, axes, pickaxes and spears can be crafted, suppose, on a workbench. Special weapons like crossbows, guns (ones that look makeshift) and, possibly, even explosives can be found inside homes of NPCs or can be bought from them. • NPCs- NPCs can be put in the game who are generally passive but attack when provoked. Four types of NPCs variants can be added- Settlers (Passive NPCs who settle down in shelters and homes), Nomads (NPCs who roam around and sell stuff to earn a living), Bandits (aggressive NPCs who will rob you. They also can rob stuff from your train) and Cultists (Aggressive NPCs who live in groups and attack on sight). Special NPCs can be used to progress the story. • TAVERNS- Taverns act as motels where you can stay for the night for a small sum of money. • CURRENCY- Gold coins can be used to trade with Settlers and Nomads. This will give the player some reason to trade with the Settlers and Nomads, and the NPCs a reason to exist and not k!ll themselves. • CUSTOMISATION- It will be fun. That's all of them. If you feel like these suggestions go against your ideas or are too similar to the games you're inspired from, feel free to not add them.
WOW dude, thanks a lot for the suggestions! 1. Upgrades - For sure, I'm planning to have minor upgrades for wheels, or other parts of the train, and also major upgrades such as installing a second enjine that would work on a different fuel. I'm note sure about the train will have an overall armor like in Charles. 2. Bears and other animals - Big yes, I had in mind coyotes in the forest that would agro if you leave the train. Bears would be a great addition to them. 3. Variety of weapons - Now this one I'm still considering. For now I'm seeing the game with no weapons, but I might re-think that when I get to the animals part. 4. Now this one conflicts with the storyline, but I'm also thinking of some ways to add NPC-s to the game so that they become a part of the storyline. 5. Currency - Not sure about this one. 6. Customisations - hell yes, there will be customisations! Thanks a lot again for the suggestions! gave me things to think about! Wait for the next devlog!
I LOVE the idea! And I hope you will be able to execute on it. I hope you can portray the cold, lonely and desperate feeling of being alone in the snow. Here are a couple sugestions: 1. As some other people have said, animals, both freindly and not. You alked about "the long dark" and it's hunting mechanics and I'm imagening something similar here. I imagine you will have hunger and thirst and similar stats, like in Green Hell and The Forest. If that is the case I would guess hunting will be your main source of food. So animals that are natural in that envirement like bears and wolfs and such would fit in perfect Maybe you could even tame one as a companion, like a wolf, but that might take away from the lonelyness of the story? 2. High maintenance. The harsh conditions takes a toll on both the player and the train. The train always needs repairs and such to stay active. These could be found in abandoned houses which would create and insentive for the player to explore and would also help with the world building. Also, as of the last sugestion, the player always needs shelter, food, water and heat to stay alive in the wilderness. 3. Weapons. Bows and knives are necessary to protect you from the dangerous animals around you. These could either be found in abandoned buildings or crafted (maybe inside the train? or in crafting tables found in abandoned buildings?). Maybe even implement a skill tree of some sorts or that your skills get better the more you hunt or craft for example Maybe this doesn't fit the story or the tone of your game at all. I'm just giving you what I imagined from this short video so if it doesn't fit feel free to not add it :) I'm excited about the game either way!
Here are some ideas: The whistle could be used to scare enemies/animals or attract them, depending on their type. Consider track obstructions that need to be cleared such as fallen trees or animal herds. Consider that the player may not always be looking outside and may not spot certain things. If the player does not spot an obstruction in time, the train may crash and take damage from it. Consider how fast the train moves and what visibility is. The player should balance speed to travel further or get more time to react to obstructions. Consider weather conditions (such as blizzards) and how they impact visibility and train performance. For story-specific locations, consider how you will make sure players spot them and force them to stop the train to investigate. It is likely that some players may not see these or may not assume them worth stopping to investigate. I know you said the train has two cars (locked and fuel-tender), but I recommend adding a general use freight car. Consider adding switches and sidings (switches allow you to make choices that may impact the story and sidings may contain abandoned wagons that you can loot or attach to your train (provided they are not damaged)). Consider finding engine sheds that allow you to swap out your train completely. Different trains have different stats (speed, fuel consumption, fuel storage capacity, pulling capacity, acceleration/braking, traction (hill climb ability), aesthetics, etc) Consider a lamp that can be attached to the front of the train. Consider sand that improves grip on icy rails or hills. Consider how the train responds to the player falling off. Etc.
A suggestion I have for this game is different train stations throughout the map that you can stop at and add more train carts to your train and some of them have special uses like a extra fuel storage one or a longue that allows you to cook in and sleep in
@@Vav97if player temperature is going to be a mechanic, you could have that play into the train cart orientation like say you choose the first connected cart to be the shelter cart, this keeps you warm as you're closer to the firebox and boiler but you're trading off quick access to other carts that might have more important uses like fuel/resource storage (and obviously more carts means more fuel is needed to move the train so player needs to decide if all the stuff they're bringing with them is worth it).
I am really intrigued by this idea. My suggestion would be a simple one, and you may already have been planning to do this, but it's to give the locomotive and the stations names. It's a simple touch, but I find that named engines and stations lend much character to real life railways, and in general are nice, potentially memorable touches for worldbuilding. Instead of players referring to things as 'the train' or 'station 1' or 'that bit with the trees', etc, they'd all have more interesting things to say. As I said, it lends character. I will follow this project, and look forward to hearing more!
I can see so much potential on the basic premises of the game. Has a truly potential, beign on the train lines you can do a very linear paths, On my mind you can do 2 things, a non repetitive jorney across land or can do a "open world" rail system navegation. I Live on Entroncamento (Portugal) The capital city of Trains and Rail Lines IDK know how I never though on a train game like this, I´m felling so dumb for that right know
sounds cool! I like the story idea, the vibe that came across while you told it and the "unique" (or at least unusual) game mechanic of driving a train! looking forward to the next videos!

This does looks awesome. I’m big on survival games and I do like the idea of a train being central to that. Would be cool tho if there were an enemy to fight and weapons to fight them with. Like some new animal species that comes with the trees or something. Hek if not that then even just hunting mechanics to fight off or hunt deer moose bears or wolves. Just to add some immediate threat to keep you on your toes lol.
Hi, I am wondering how you got the train to affect the player's velocity, so that the player stays on the train as it moves. Are you using a rigidbody movement or character controller? How have you achieved this?
Hey! The train is non rb, and the player controller is. There is also camera as a separate object that follows the player. There are a lot of tutorials on moving platforms, I took them as the base for my code. Joing our discord if you need any help :)
