Thank you for listening to the seasoned pirates. We spent thousands of hours already, and know that the content of the game doesnt lie in big flashy updates (for example new talltales) but rather improving server performance, banning cheaters for good (btw, the ingame report feels very useless since all you get is "please provide more info" without any link or so to even do so. Not that it should be necessary, blatant cheaters can be caught by adding stuff like movement logs. The logs dont have to be human readable. This developer update seems REALLY good. If you deliver then this'll be amazing, since reducing the amount of new content to fix key issues is absolutely worth it and is gonna make many old players happy, then you can start doing more once you've stabilized things. Here's a couple of ideas I have that I still want to share even though content's slowing down, just because I think they're fun. It'd be really cool if the grapple gun could still take up a weapon slot, but be equipped as an off hand. What I mean is that if you have grapple gun + another weapon then you could use both, maybe a separate keybind for offhand weapons. That'd make many more people use it even more because although the buff is nice, lots of people still won't use it as they'd prefer the damage. I think any non-damaging weapons (currently only grapple) should be able to essentially be duel-wielded with other weapons. You definitely should NOT be able to use 2 damaging weapons at the same time though. Then in the future, just something I think would be cool, we could have an equippable shield and then have that classify as a non-offensive slot. It wouldn't fully protect you from everything, but it'd just make combat so much more interesting, especially as there's only 1 weapon that lets us block at the moment, and it's also the only close-range one (not counting throwing knives) I just shared my ideas for fun and no expectations to see what other people think, but either way, great update, hope everything goes smoothly!
Not being able to grapple across masts is the main reason you’ll rarely see the grapple gun used. Lose too much offensive capability by not having another weapon with not enough useful ship mobility.
Love the sound of these changes. Taking a cautious approach with the grapple gun was definitely the right call, and I've already found a bunch of uses for it despite that, so I'm definitely looking forward to the buffs. And honestly, releasing Season 15 in multiple parts over sounds kinda nice? Just means something new to get excited about each month as opposed to having to learn and adapt to a bunch of new mechanics at once.
This is what I like to hear! Everything sounds like it’s going to get better and I’m sure players won’t mind postponing more content for big fixes and performance improvements. I’m looking forward to all of this
Add a spawn point on our sloops at the crow's nest and the tip of the bow to help with avoiding spawn trap loops being done by 2 - 4 people. Hell, I'd even be happy with an option on the Ferry to choose to spawn at a random spot around the ship in the water.
Still waiting for you to remove the NDA status on Insiders. Making the discussion and testing public would open up new venues for testing and build more hype, along with helping us find issues far faster than just faffing about and hoping we find something. Despite that? I approve of the change from 'idle for an hour' to 'actively test and get a reputation level'. Lets hope this improves fixing things and finding bugs!
Way to go Rare! I think you guys are nailing it since the last couple weeks with those podcasts and dev updates! Totally down with a break on features to maximize game performance. Really like the honesty and transparency. Keep up the good work!
Thank you all so much for your consideration! Although I am disappointed by the delay, I know it's absolutely necessary and I think it's such a good idea to release the update features in smaller chunks to monitor performance, as well as making it easier for the Game Health Team to fix the performance issues! Looking forward to the holidays on the seas!
Happy Holidays to you too Drew and everybody at Rare!!!! I still am really hopeful we shall see Grogomany this year !!!! Glad to see you guys are listening to our feedback and being transparent about the changes that need to be made . Again Happy Holidays Rare!!!
you keep making promises of the more time you have per update the less bugs the update will have. it took a year to patch in guilds and it was one of th ebuggiest patches you have ever released. so now youre setting an expectation once again for longer gaps between content, but now also less content so you can space out the content and yet you have a 7 year track record of not being able to deliver a stable update
Great work Rare, love the transparency and regular dev updates. As a dev and a season 1 player I really appreciate what you guys have done with the game and that you've listened to the community. I really hope the ban evaders get sorted. Hourglass can be a nightmare and a very frustrating experience. Looking forward to no more cheaters in SoT!
Bro, how is it that Subnautica, DRG, and SoT devs are actually like, the best, they are like the best, for the people! Keep it up devs, you guys are truly Goated.
sea of thieves experience in 2024 look like - i havent played for a while and returned coz of new cool updates, i joined opened crew gally and we go to fof, sunk brigantine and then they comebacked and 1 of them switched his main acc to cheater acc and killed us all, love this game.
Splitting up the seasons is a double-edged sword. While yes, it allows for features to be tested better so we don't have a repeat of season 14, it also feels like drip feeding content which only benefits the devs at the cost of player enjoyment. Seasons should feel amazing to look forward to, instead of having to wait.
That would mean they'd have to rebuild the entire game from the ground up, and that can take many years to accomplish. Switching to a new game engine is not as easy as it sounds
Hands down as a ps5 player playing first time this year, I would just like to say thank you 🙏 You keep giving us updates and acknowledgment about things that aren’t working. Some people don’t understand this is also a business. In comparison to other games, I think the communication from your side has been good 🙂👍
slowing the updates wont help things. honestly you are more looking to pad your player engagement numbers by drip feeding the seasons content. remember when you used to patch every single week. and the claim on less frequent updates was to get more stable releases. so you went to bi-weekly updates... and those were buggy as hell too. then you went to monthly updates and even then you still couldnt patch without bugs. now we do a major update every 3-10 months and even thats buggy. but the worst part is since you now only patch with the cash shop update that means major bug fixes also get delayed a whole month. look at guilds you were working on that for over a year and it released a buggy mess. i dont think any amount of time is going to result in you delivering better more stable updates
My buddy I started playing SOT with for last couple years just uninstalled it the other day. Haven’t played it in awhile now. Seas seem so empty nowadays. 😔 might follow suit..
I love everything in this. All of these decisions are excellent. I’m very pleased with how conservative y’all were with introducing the grapple gun. It did not break the game, and that’s all that really matters. I like the monthly update slower season approach. Perhaps coupled with more live events. Which we’ve been getting in spades and I’ve really been enjoying! Season 14’s launch was the worst I’ve experienced in my time in this game (started season 9). But it seems like the team is learning the lessons from this season, and has made meaningful commitment to change. I’m thrilled about this direction the game is taking. Thank you to the whole Rare team, and I patiently await whatever happens next. I guess I’ll go do some HG, FOTD steals, and BB stacks/sinks while I wait.
I like everything I'm hearing out of this (Except the tiny buckets, come on!), I think rolling the Seasonal features out over time is a good move that will pay off big in the long run, along with giving us something to look forward to more often.
I just want the crew of sea of thieves to know, I love this game and think it’s the best pirate experience ever and would love for more and hope to see more for this game
I am very happy these are back. It is nice to know what is going on and what’s being worked on. I am also glad your delaying season 15, take your time to make sure it launches in a good state
This is sounding so good! Drew you are now the bearer of all the good news! You deserve it! Love ya mat and thank you rare for putting in effort to being better
The changes to insider is honestly the best thing I've heard in the video (which is filled with a lot of good announcements). Making players earn their rewards instead of just sitting at the outpost for and hour is honestly a good change. I already figured the new update would release in Feburary because of it's scale and the backlash of season 14, I'm hesitant of features being split up over the months, I personally prefer they just take more to time to work on the update then release all of it when it's ready, but we will see, I wasn't the biggest fan of when they last did monthly updates as a majority of them were kind of underwhelming.
@@Bigoldietz Yes, Though I wish some of them didn't take as long. That commonmdation for making skellys kill their captain was not fun the first time, and definitely not fun the other twenty four times.
For season 16 just make the ice region come alive new adventure new tall tales different icey lands different treasure whole new expansion the top left corner of the map would bring this game back to life.
maybe dont reveal everything coming in a season if your gunna slow roll stuff. id hint at them, but only reveal the next thing as the other thing is being put out also thank you for taking time to fix the game. thats more of what we need and want.
Well, it’s a wonderful Christmas gift. I really like the new direction you’ve decided to take, with a greater focus on performance and I hope you will separate even more the concepts of “season” and “a massive update released all at once.” I hope this helps improve the quality of future updates, fix issues that have been around for months, and give you the time to work on new features without crunches to meet the strict “season deadline”.
Great video, im glad you guys are focusing on performance rather than realising new mechanics. Nothings worse then getting lag in the middle of a fight
Amazing! 🎉 I love the improvements proposed for grapple ands blowdarts! These are either exactly what I was hoping for or just as good! Good to hear about ban evasions, the much needed Insider improvements, performance being a focus, and glad to hear that season 15 won’t be rushed! All good news! Thank you Rare!!
I appreciate you guys. Also, I realized that the enemy are the cheaters, and exploiters. They're the reason why the team has to focus on critical exploits, rather than working on server performance, and or other things. Sadly, those people are the reason why it feels like you guys take 1 step foward and 2 steps back. Had they control their impulse, the team could keep on working foward-only. Nevertheless, thanks for doing your best to make us happy, while dealing with the exploiters of doom. 🍻
Wow, finally focusing on performance? Bout time. Lost my ability to play competitively-what? two, maybe three seasons ago. Dang Rare, glad to see you figured out where so much of your player base went. At this rate, I may even come back to give the game a go again. Keep it up!
PLEASE, if you are not sure that update is ready to release, delay it more, dont just throw it in game and fix when things already opened. I would rather wait more to get a polished and good working updates then getting a broken thing. Probably in future, when ue5 will be better explored it also can help with game performance. I saw a video where people got 300 fps in clear sea and feels so good, but in crowded places - immediate lags. I hope that game will get more technical attention.
And probably, it's better to drop the support of old gen consoles, probably. I understand that people wouldn't like it at all, but it feels like a crabs in bucket situation. Old gen can't hold everything and you start to optimize things for them, but making a lot of mistakes on other platforms. I don't say that you need to make it immediately but I'm I think it will be good to warn people when you decide to move forward.

I've always been a supporter of Insider tasks for rewards, this seems to be a good step.
Those grapple changes are everything I could have ever wished for!
Great update! I love the idea of the grapple buffs and the focus on performance over content.
you keep making promises of the more time you have per update the less bugs the update will have. it took a year to patch in guilds and it was one of th ebuggiest patches you have ever released. so now youre setting an expectation once again for longer gaps between content, but now also less content so you can space out the content and yet you have a 7 year track record of not being able to deliver a stable update
As a day one player I just wanted to say thank you for such an amazing game. Merry Xmas!
I love the SoT devs. Rare has consistently put out amazing games and SoT is right there with it. Love the game and love the interaction with devs!
Performance enhancer: re-release the game on unreal engine 5
That would mean they'd have to rebuild the entire game from the ground up, and that can take many years to accomplish. Switching to a new game engine is not as easy as it sounds
As someone whos loving the blowpipe for PVE quick dart switching button is a GODSENT
I'm kind of impressed this is presented so positively when not only is S15 delayed, it's dripfed
I like everything apart from the rep in insider. Like what i have to grind rep in the test and the game?
So, no humble/generous gifts made available like the christmas they were introduced ? The miniature had me hopping.
Hands down as a ps5 player playing first time this year, I would just like to say thank you 🙏
You keep giving us updates and acknowledgment about things that aren’t working. Some people don’t understand this is also a business. In comparison to other games, I think the communication from your side has been good 🙂👍
This game is dead and you got scammed its called the pirate emporium
slowing the updates wont help things. honestly you are more looking to pad your player engagement numbers by drip feeding the seasons content.
remember when you used to patch every single week. and the claim on less frequent updates was to get more stable releases. so you went to bi-weekly updates... and those were buggy as hell too. then you went to monthly updates and even then you still couldnt patch without bugs. now we do a major update every 3-10 months and even thats buggy. but the worst part is since you now only patch with the cash shop update that means major bug fixes also get delayed a whole month. look at guilds you were working on that for over a year and it released a buggy mess. i dont think any amount of time is going to result in you delivering better more stable updates
at least they bought a new barn tho.... thats gotta do something right lol
My buddy I started playing SOT with for last couple years just uninstalled it the other day. Haven’t played it in awhile now. Seas seem so empty nowadays. 😔 might follow suit..
The first video from Rare that has felt genuine in years.
The sweater goes crazy
Absolutely love the passion you have behind your game. Looking forward to playing SOT moving forward. Happy holidays all you scurvy pirates! 🏴☠️
Thank you for finally putting your foccus on the god awful performance issues the game has
seriously, the game really needed that
Happy for the grapple changes. A missed shot using ammo was really stupid.
I'm happy I finished Insiders before this change lol. No more outpost afk
Please consider bringing the midnight blunderbuss back with an event!
But do you think it will take longer than an hour to complete the goals required to get the fewards
@@Bigoldietz Yes, Though I wish some of them didn't take as long. That commonmdation for making skellys kill their captain was not fun the first time, and definitely not fun the other twenty four times.
Guys this is the right step with the updates I'm so proud too be a SoT player happy holidays
Dear devs, please remember that fixing current problems, bugs, and stability issues is always more welcome than adding new features
A: Love the changes to the grapple gun
B: NOOO TINY BUCKET
C: While it sucks that the hunters call changes get pushed back, I get your reasoning
Amazing Sweater Drew 10/10
So glad it looks like we'll be starting 2025 on a good trajectory
I have literally been hoping for a staggered content drop approach and grapple gun buffs and they’re doing BOTH??? THEY HEARD ME😭 THEY LOVE ME 😭🙏🙏
Captain Falcore’s calling the shots confirmed
4:21 this is insane never seen a game studio say or do this
For season 16 just make the ice region come alive new adventure new tall tales different icey lands different treasure whole new expansion the top left corner of the map would bring this game back to life.
maybe dont reveal everything coming in a season if your gunna slow roll stuff. id hint at them, but only reveal the next thing as the other thing is being put out
also thank you for taking time to fix the game. thats more of what we need and want.
Well, it’s a wonderful Christmas gift. I really like the new direction you’ve decided to take, with a greater focus on performance and I hope you will separate even more the concepts of “season” and “a massive update released all at once.”
I hope this helps improve the quality of future updates, fix issues that have been around for months, and give you the time to work on new features without crunches to meet the strict “season deadline”.
Great video, im glad you guys are focusing on performance rather than realising new mechanics. Nothings worse then getting lag in the middle of a fight
This is everything i want to hear ! Amazing changes around balancing the game and focus on ban evades
Drew is becoming my favorite Dev
Amazing! 🎉
I love the improvements proposed for grapple ands blowdarts! These are either exactly what I was hoping for or just as good!
Good to hear about ban evasions, the much needed Insider improvements, performance being a focus, and glad to hear that season 15 won’t be rushed!
All good news! Thank you Rare!!
Rare are actually making good meaningful changes? This is a great start!
The best hand movements in the business. We need an emote of them.
nice updates on the insider i just hope that the "reputation goal" is not going to be to high and will make it take longer than an hour
could end up making it faster sometimes!
@@Spike.SpiegeI yeah hope so
I appreciate you guys. 🍻
They could have avoided 90% of exploits by listening to their players
Wow, finally focusing on performance? Bout time. Lost my ability to play competitively-what? two, maybe three seasons ago. Dang Rare, glad to see you figured out where so much of your player base went. At this rate, I may even come back to give the game a go again. Keep it up!
Much work to do, but I hope this game can make a comeback.
Thanks
Thanks rare
Sea of thieves is like a Landrover. They’re really great at first but after a while they become very unreliable.
Happy holidays! Hope you guys get some good rest! Much love, I'm looking forward to the new features you're baking for us!
Yes. More focus on stable servers at the cost of new features. You cant build a house on top of a shaky foundation. Good call.
They've already decided to build a solid tungsten house over what used to be a pretty strong reinforced base, that they've neglected over the last uhhhhhhh 5 years?
