Hey Kelly! I used to live in South Korea and have traveled to Tokyo twice, so I know these feelings well. All I can say is try not to feel guilty about it because it can be super overwhelming! I can't tell you how many times I found myself in an extremely awkward situation and wished I was back home where I understand everything and everyone understands me. Tokyo's a bit different because there are a lot of other foreigners, but there weren't that many in the town I was living in in Korea, and there were days when I didn't want to leave my apartment because I was so tired of always sticking out. I also tend to have guilt when I'm traveling and don't "make the most of my time," but at the end of the day, you can't do everything nor are you going to want to do everything on vacation. Talking about it is one thing, actually living it is another. We're not robots! If we want to take it easy, we should take it easy. In hindsight, I don't regret the days I couldn't/ didn't want to do more. I don't dwell on the bad experiences (like not having hot water in my apartment for 2 months bc I didn't understand how to pay the bills properly). Mostly, I'm proud of myself for just doing the damn thing and experiencing life on a different plane. I made memories that'll last me a lifetime, and that's with staying in sometimes for days on end. It's hard to see sometimes when you're in it, but in hindsight I'm really grateful and proud.

As a single woman, I’m also leaning into living my life without a co-sign and doing the things I feel compelled to even if it’s alone so I get the bitter sweet of these adventures. I always appreciate your candour, that’s what makes you so great!❤

Its so normal to have these feelings, especially during your first solo trip! Not speaking the language and having those barriers is hard at first but you will get the hang of it! It's good to push through the discomfort but it can be very isolating. I took my first solo trip last year and ended up taking five more in the same year!! You got this and I'm proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone! Not many people do that.
Also, unrelated but that intro? Givingggg

There are some places in Japan that refuse to accept foreigners of any kind. I remember watching another youtuber and him and his group were denied entry to a small restaurant. Another restaurant accepted them but they had to try cow tongue to get in. 😂 (Which in honesty does taste good)

I know exactly what you mean about traveling alone. It's so exciting at first and the prospect of making new friends/acquaintances is fun too. But then you start missing simple familiar things (especially when the culture is more different from American). I like the freedom of traveling alone but maybe it would be fun to travel with another solo traveler. Like we have our own rooms, but we have the option to spend time together when we want to. Like a no pressure travel buddy lol that speaks the same language and can take cute pics.

I definitely empathize with your experiences you spoke about towards the end of the video! I just got back from Tokyo last week and I was there for 3 weeks. There was a period where I longed for being back home for the sake of being able to have more meaningful interactions with those around me. It got quite frustrating to not be able to get to know people on a deeper level due to the language barrier but also made me want to learn Japanese so much more since I love Japanese culture so much and see myself returning.
I also am very spontaneous with going on solo trips and solo adventures and it does get quite lonesome not having others who can relate to the spontaneity that I often have with doing new things. Definitely a blessing to be able to do such amazing things but can get lonely from time to time 🏧

Glad you found some folks to connect with! For various reasons, I’ve had to travel to foreign parts alone. Not knowing a language can suck even more when by oneself. Before I retired, my job took me to Italy in the summers and learning the language took a good 8 years, and I still wasn’t very fluent. What you felt was absolutely normal, and many eventually get to a point where they find anything and anyone from their home country to connect with. McDonalds looks fantastic after about 3 weeks in Rome. 😂

I am from Japan but okay I havent been back for a while but I am so surprised about the breakfast comment you had initially because my mum always raves about the "morning sets" you can get in cafes in Japan in the morning that you have to get up really early for, they have like little sandwiches or toast and eggs and tiny cups of yogurt on the side with salad and comes with your choice of coffee or tea, maybe its hard to find these days because I havent been back for years.

Have loved your Japan vlogs Kelly! I've travelled to Japan twice, but I've felt a similar way in Japan too - missing just everyday small talk and being able to just share things! We take simple two way, free flowing conversation for granted (and i'm also pretty introverted). Also totally my fault for not learning much Japanese, but we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zones sometimes. Also life, holidays and progress is not always linear. What might feel like a step back may just be a little detour or a bit of a scenic route. Either way you're not static and you're learning new things - but you can have low day or times when you just need to rest. Thanks for sharing in an honest way Kelly! Was just excited to see you get to Japan either way ❤

Your videos genuinely make me have self love :) I’m a saver with my money but sometimes I forget to like go all out for myself. I love being stable but I forget that like being stable and gaining more then you expect consistently doesn’t mean to just always keep saving 😅 I went to my first bar yesterday after watching one of your videos. I turned 21 3 months ago 😂 it’s also the first restaurant I’ve been to in 4 months. Like doing things for yourself shouldn’t be the last thing on your plate, your vids being playful and always about focusing on yourself help me be more selfish in the nicest way possible!

Maybe next time either hire a guide or ask a subscriber to show you around. Also get a room with a bathtub, there's nothing like taking a good long soak after travelling a long time.

I also miss travelling with somebody I'm really close with. Travelling alone is also great. But travelling and experiencing things with somebody else you like is better.

Funny about the oatmeal quest! I craved that for breakfast when I was in Tokyo. Luckily I was at a business hotel that had american breakfasts on the menu so I could get that comfort breakfast in!

I totally understand because I moved to China by myself in 2011 for a study abroad program and extended my stay for almost a year. I love solo travel, but there were times when I really wished my Mandarin was fluent because I couldn’t have deep conversations.
