Im in 9a lucky for me I didnt know this and stuck garlic in pots with other plants all summer its growing everywhere, helps keeps bugs away. Over a foot tall now
So glad I found this video just before planting garlic in Southern California, and saved me from making several mistakes (but I can always find others).
Thank you for all your videos! Always learning something new! Im in zone 10b in Florida. planted soft neck garlic and sprouted within a week during waning moon in November. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. 😊
Yay you did a video... mines in the refrigerator now. But I do have a question if we need to fertilize it or just use compost for fertilizer? Thank You
Both! Mix in compost so that your soil structure is improved and it can hold more moisture. Add a dash (follow instructions on bag) of an all purpose organic fertilizer when you plant. Hope that helps!
Hello! Thank you for this helpful video. I live in Oakland and I’m wondering if it’s too late to start the process? I have not done the 40 days in the fridge
Plus you can use greens from the garlic and it is also delicious. And yang garlic - you can harvest earlier and it looks like a green onion - chop and to the salads or soups. yammy yammy yammy
Hi there! Good information on vernalization process. I come under Zone 9. If I put my garlic in the fridge to sprout for 40 days, then will I still be good at planting them late November?
So am I too late right now? I’m in Northern California, 9b. I just bought some planting garlic, it’s been restocked at Home Depot since the last time I was there. I’m looking for a definitive period of time to plant garlic, onions, potato’s, and asparagus. The packages all say “after danger of frost”, and it’s still frosty with frozen water troughs in the mornings… so I plant in spring right? Or should I just get them all in the ground asap? Please help, please would you give me a direct answer of what month I should be planting onion, garlic, potato, and asparagus in northern ca 9b? And I already bought them to plant so should I just do it now anyways, or should I return them?
If you have frost right now, wait until that threat is over (could be early spring or the end of what's technically winter). Most of zone 10 never has a frost so we can plant in the fall and let them grow during the winter. I don't sell asparagus, but February and March are a good time for that.
Not sure if we're from the same valley, but hello anyways fellow valley person. I live in zone 9b. Came here looking to find out how to grow garlic in my climate as well. Did you plant your garlic after all? How is it going? I'm curious about how its doing now that we're in summer.
Both hardneck and soft necks grow perfectly well in San Diego or Southern California. The key- is to pop it in the fridge for 40-60 days prior to planting to vernalize them.
@@xaviercruz4763 no, we usually plant on Halloween. I'm going to do an Instagram Live on Thursday at 6:30 pm Pacific to answer all questions related to garlic!

How did you do? Did they grow well? Want to try my hand at it myself. I'm on the Treasure Coast.
I love your videos, short, informative, to the point. Thank you!
Thank you! Be sure to like our videos and follow us. We have tons more coming.
Another good reason to grow your own is garlic scapes. Been finding a lot of recipes to use them lately.
Sounds good!
hello just so you now you jjust solved my problem i will put it in fridge, and yes you are right homegrown garlic as lots and lots of flavor 🙂
Awesome

It's a bit late now. You could still try it as an experiment (or even to harvest the greens), but I wouldn't do too many.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you!!
What’s the name of your company. Do you plant hard neck or soft neck garlic. I am 9B in northern cal about 50 miles from Sacramento.
Thanks! Cool!

Making me hungry 🤤
Thank you for the video! I have a question. Do you put the garlic in the refrigerator in a paper bag or in the soil or as is?
We vernalize it before planting
Hi there! Good information on vernalization process. I come under Zone 9. If I put my garlic in the fridge to sprout for 40 days, then will I still be good at planting them late November?
Yup! That's totally fine
Is vernalization necessary for both hard neck and soft neck or just just hard neck?
Both if you are in a warm climate.

I live in the valley I believe I am zone nine. But it’s about to turn on Spring does that mean it’s too late?

I have 3 that have been in the fridge for the 40 days, do they need to have the green sprout coming out before planting? Mine dont have that.
Nope. You're going to pull apart each clove anyway
So when should we verbalize our garlic & when should we plant it in the ground?
If your in zones 9 and 10 you want to vernalize them for 40 days. We plant them around Halloween to overwinter.
When do we plant in SoCal? When do we harvest?
We plant Oct- Jan. Harvest summer into fall depending on the variety.
For our zones does the same refrigeration method apply to other root vegetables?
Like carrot seeds? No.
Are they ready to plant or do we need to give them 40 days in the fridge? Zone10
Definitely put them in the fridge for 30-60 days
How did it go with hardneck garlics in Southern CA?
Both hardneck and soft necks grow perfectly well in San Diego or Southern California. The key- is to pop it in the fridge for 40-60 days prior to planting to vernalize them.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany I wish God blesses you for that info, and on top. After the fridge, do you plant in any season? thanks

I'm in zone 10b when should I start the vernalization process?
Four to eight weeks before planting. We like to plant on Halloween or in November
Thank you
I wanted to buy some garlic seed, but everything was sold out :(
