ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

The only thing more incoherent than this speech was Pelosi's.
I think they were sitting beside each other maybe even sharing a bottle of volka together.
If you had said nothing and merely nodded sagely we might have assumed you were capable of hearing a nuanced argument
To summarise: 'Populism' is the peasants voting for the wrong candidate, and we can't have that now, can we?
@@Stew282 Not what he said.
@@deanmthomson Correct, it's a very succinct summary!
When they talk about "our democracy", you and I aren't included in the our.
He basically just said "Populism is bad when it opposes me, and good when I like the things they advocate for."
That makes him an elitist and he likes that "status"... LOL
That is their basic argument. He is a quite fine representative of the democracy they are in favor of
Not even close to being accurate or true
@@deanmthomson I think you've confused presentation with argument.
I think he sat down with Nancy and a bottle of vodka to write his speech.
Sounds like one of the elite trying to talk his way out of the guillotine
Elitist apologist. We see right thru it.
Plus he's suffering from a case of TDS.
😂😂😂
This is the textbook definition of the saying "All sizzle, no steak."
He brought in a bullet, said this man did nothing with this bullet, but let me make my whole argument around this nothing bullet, then brought it back to this bullet. I thought this was Oxford
Yes!
Appeal to emotions & snideness because he has no real argument.
5:40 -48 He accidentally hit Pelosi with some friendly fire when he points out the dangers of insider trading.
It wasn't accidental.
He's not a fan of either the Republicans or the "Democrats"
😂😂😂😂
His argument is not against Populism. He is arguing against anyone he disagrees with winning. He claimed incorrectly that January 6th protests were against the electoral college, then a moment later argued against the “tyranny of the mob.” Another example, he argued that the popular opinion was in favor of the death penalty. He even compared populists as a threat the same as the Conservative Party.
Rich kid alert. Detached and engrandised from the human experience of the foolish plebeian.
why are the democrats always redefining words? meaning of words? ect...
He who controls the language controls the masses.
"tyranny of the majority" Um, that's what democracy is, which is why most "democracies" are constitutional republics.
Tyranny of the majority isn’t democracy at all. It’s control of the majority while DISREGARDING everyone else.
I’ll put it like this, you’ve got £100 to split. 75% of the people want one thing while 25% want another.
Tyranny of the majority would give all £100 to that first group, completely ignoring everyone else.
A real democracy would break it 75 and 25.
Exactly what I thought, that's why we are a republic!
Nope, that's what democracy can become and hence all the safeguards, checks and balances etc. in many constitutions. Of course, not in the British one, that vests unlimited power into the hands of a barely elected oligarchy. Remaining checks (such as the head of state) are cowered into complying.
@@str.77 Thank you for agreeing that direct democracies don't work, they need checks and balances and safeguards. Once put in place, they are no longer democracies.
Not as convincing as Winston I’m afraid.
I wonder if Oli can give us perhaps the British definition of insurrection?
What a smug little chap. lol
I am sorry bro, I just could not take you seriously after you lied so blatantly about 223’s lol.
Pretty sure thats a 223 casing
Getting ratioed straight to hell 😂😂😂
This guy did not accomplish a very positive debate technique. Very fact lacking trying to tie slogans together.
So "populism good when it's for his policies, but populism bad when it's for policies he dislikes."
Rules for thee but not for me.
At the heart of it they are trying to tell you someone with a rally of 100k means they are not popular and the guy who can't get anyone at his rallies is actually the popular candidate
The problem is being popular for the wrong reasons, lying and manipulating the public, tricking people into believing real issues society is facing is not because of the corrupt global elite, no its trans people, Muslims and lefty liberal snowflakes 😂😂😂, they tried to storm the capitol lol this is not democracy friend, if I get 100,000 goons, some wearing pro holocaust t shirts, with me to storm parliament does it make it right?
3:56 millionaire Pelosi must be that "side eye muppet" meme during this portion of Oli's speech.
"What dictatates what is good or bad populism"
A policy is agree with is "popular". A policy I disagree with is "populist".
Debate has fallen to new lows. I guess show and tell, poor speaking skills, and bad jokes is what people want. Populism indeed
1. There is no "group" liberty - only individuals can have liberty.
2. Majorities are the basis for democracy and definitive to true democracy.
So ironic that this speech preys so much on simplictic minds and fear, especially the end of it. That's what many people actually often describe as populism. No country in the world is actually in danger of degenerating towards ethno-nationalism.
Also I'm not a fan of Erdogan, but it's looking like he is losing power. It's just democracy at work.
... and the UK 100% isn't edging toward ethnonationalism! It does want to function for its current inhabitants and offspring, though!
Did he have a point? He sure meandered all over the place seeking to use a flow of words to make it appear as if he had something to say. After parsing his words I think I can sum up his argument as "Populism is bad and scary, because it's bad and scary. So be afraid of the bad scary thing!!:
I don't know who "won" this debate yet, but I'm sad for this guy that he thinks that would be some accomplishment after that veganism debate where the lady said "your meat comes with a side of misogyny" and they said her side won
You've lost all credibility after that
They won the Oxford vote, while Winston Marshall won the populist vote! 😃
Winston Marshall is a hero in USA! He went viral as he should for being the most articulate, logic and research speech! (In simple words for the 'poor souls' as Mrs. Pelosi referred to the populists)
This guy had 12 minutes and didn't make a single point. Also, maybe find a tux that isn't 3 sizes too small. I watched the full 12 minutes only to see if his jacket button would pop off.
He gives the 'arrogant' vibes! Am I the only one that sense this?
@@007msb-tn8vu Arrogant, because these imbeciles truly believe they make cogent arguments.
@@007msb-tn8vu No he's terrible. Ignoring even his tone, the arguments he makes are blatantly anti-democratic. Tyranny of the majority, "checks and balances on elections", the implication that the exercise of public will is often racist and evil, ... He's an elitist to the core.
He’s trying to score a job with the elites….
@@007msb-tn8vuno, you're not.
One of the richest fanciest Universities on earth, and they have this kind of catastrophic mic and sound set-up?
And students this unimpressive..
A supercilious self important, entitled, inexperienced young “man” playing to the crowd. Clearly extremely eloquent and intelligent, arguably not as much as he believes. Admire his courage to publicly speak, not an easy thing to do. Undoubtedly he will enjoy the the warmth of the welcoming, righteous crannies this speech will deliver. Populism in practice.
He took the whole "non-verbal communication matters more than verbal" a little too seriously.
AKA All sizzle, no steak.
@@siriusfunHe will have had his fill of virtuous beef since this speech.
Insider trading...not pointing any fingers LOL, but would love to see Pelosi's face when he uttered that phrase....
That was incredible speech. I’m glad Pelosi and her weirdo husband were there to hear it. She needs to lose her position. She’s held it far too long.
Is this the guy running ‘politics Joe’ ? 😂
If you are on the same side of a debate with "Let Them Eat Cake" Pelosi, you are on the wrong side of the debate and history.
1. The begging with the bullet was an anecdote of what he portrays a demented member of the civilians?
2. Later in regard to the abolishment of the death penalty in Britain, he quoted the phrase “his populist politics threatens democracy”, and later explains populists as mayoritarianism.
Oxford. You have failed.
"Populism is the tirany of the majority " Crazy to ear. After lowdowns and forced vacations.
My God. Bravo, bravo Winston!!!! 👏 Thank you for speaking for the likes of me, a hard working, middle class American who is sick of the global elites. They hate America, hate freedom, hate democracy. Trump's not perfect, but I sure as hell will be voting for him. God bless America 🇺🇸 and God bless UK 🇬🇧 and God bless Israel 🇮🇱
What happened to the 2nd video? 2/6?
That is why we don’t have unfettered Democracy, mob rule. We are a Democratic Republic, the needs of Utah are not the needs of New York. So to build a consensus among people with different backgrounds and needs is truly what democracy is. Populism per the Oxford Dictionary “support for the concerns of ordinary people; political philosophy that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel their concerns are disregarded by elite groups.” Definition of Democracy Oxford Dictionary “ a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state typically through elected representation.” Whole population vs a consensus among people, both sound pretty democratic to me, nowhere does it mention rule by elites.
6:59 You say balance, but yet it always ends up in your favor why is that? Why is it that your side is always favored over everyone else's? It's called control.
Oliver should seek therapy for that stale TDS
Oli was not arguing against "right wing populism", but rather he was arguing against the extremists found on the fringes of BOTH political sides. To point at the crazies on the other side while completely ignoring those on your own side is breathtaking levels of ignorance.
Oli- continue to cosplay your communist revolution- but try to recognize actual reality from the fantasies in your own head.
What a mess! So, what were his points again?
So many words yet so little to say.
This chap is so full of himself!
ok - so lets summarise this :-
1) "It is wrong to believe Trump is an actor for the people... because he is a capitalist, he is a product of the establishment, he is the swamp".
While capitalism has long supported small government, allowing business ideas and entrepreneurship to flourish, the opposite was the socialist/communist idea where the government is always defining the course of the nation at the most granular levels
I would say that while anyone, be they a capitalist entrepreneur or a lifetime government employee, could be seen as a swamp creature as they are surely vastly connected to thousands, if not tens of thousands of people in all manner of relationships and demands on those relationships, it is the government employee who can be rigged and pulled the easiest.
In the immortal words of one of his fellow countrymen, "Much ado about nothing." "A tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing." It is difficult to credit that he had just won a debate at the Cambridge Union. I have no difficulty giving credit where credit is due, not even to one with differing opinions, but in Oli Dugmore's case, credit is not due. He is apparently one of those who are simply "wise in their own conceits."
1:51 Please tell me that this Topic has a point to it. 😂😂😂😂😂 Yes, that was a pun.
Ok 4:10 is not wrong. Touche
He didn't say anything.
he said a lot and was on point. maybe you are too much of a 'populist' to get it.
@@NaticzkaKaminskaHenryDolphin All he said was far-right bad, vague-leftism good.
Bro buttering up nancy for his future political career. Smart
You know that moment when you realize that the last 10 minutes was completely wasted, and the person is never going to add to the debate what-so-ever? ----> me @ 10:29
2:27 What's with the stupid monikers? Like, how low are you bro? Calling people names. Wow.
I’m sure when he comes to the United States of America Pelosi will have him over for dinner and some drink? Perhaps vodka.
5:47 It's better than what you're offering. I don't wanna be a slave.
Clearly doesn't understand the term "the swamp"
I watch Rep Pelosi speak first. She was note-less. ? Then I watched Winston Marshall. He had notes and did a much better job. Then I found this guy Oli Dugmore. I was thinking Mr. Marshall won the day but now... The "notes" have it, no notes and you are just a hand waving Grandmother.
3:15 there is so much to that story. The big lie.
I will send in a penny dementia JOe
He started off a good spirit, he isn't anymore
This guy speak so much that he ended up saying nothing 😂😂😂😂
This is the guy from LBC he is tedious on the radio and tedious here.
Not convinced
:40 better talk about Constitutional Republic
This was sa dreadful performance.
First of all, there was a mistrust of the result of corrupted processes that incensed certain citizens and not the results of uncorrupted processes. The US is a Constitutional Republic. US Senators and Representatives swear an oath to uphold the Constitution not simply democracy. The US Constitution codifies the rights of the individual above the tyranny of a majority and forms the constraints that government can enforce upon citizens. Populism is unconstrained and thus a Constitution - or like constraint - is imperative for democracy not to devolve into tyranny.
awful
the props were an overuse of emotional mcguffin :D Well spoken yes, but I don't agree with this postiion. It is of a small bubble of thought I think.
Wow, the comments in here are fucking dumb today.
5:20 who can argue?
Starmer! 😬
1:20 and no he doesn't
2:40 comrade?
his deep breathing into the mic is horrible
Some englishmen are so snide (condescending, underhanded, deviously rude & impolite) with their forceful flatulent platitudes, as well as commenting on individualism with the accuratecy of a deaf & blind man, it is remarkable how well they do it.

So distracting when he pauses to laugh at his own jokes 😬
7:07 Again, control.
Comrade Pelosi is correct sir.

This guy is a clown 🤡
Good commentary

5:00 There is no such thing as legitimate democracy without a firearm.
It is exactly your kind, those who are beguiled by a pretense of masculinity and seek to solve their lack theirof via the warmth of the barrel of a gun that fuel the far-right populism that pervades US power and media. This destructive form of governance is sustained by the likes of you- ignorant and a product biased media outlets and a failing education system. For it is those misinformed enough to spread ideas like these that frontline a threat to democracy.
The Faaaaar right, is a figment of the let's imagination.
Your conflating popularism and capitalism
The jokes, just don't hit on the negative side. I'm getting such bad second-hand embarrassment lol. Just make your points and drop the 'comedy' routine!
3:30 insurrection? Now he is making things up. About to turn off

So this guy knows some militia dude in the Georgia woods? Not following, but I'm not buying it.
Well done Oli!
Oddly enough I can’t make enough distinction between you and Trump.
Oli, great points!
He lied about 223 cartridges from the very start. This isn’t debatable. He was factual wrong.
@@TheArcticBunker You would think people would at this point, know the difference between a 22 and a 15 🤣
@@TheArcticBunker And according to he himself that cartridge was fired at a rural shooting range, not at a person. So why was it relevant except to try and create some sort of drama.
