Connecting two different networks together in different buildings

i thought router and switch should be connected with straight through cable

Hi yes. You are right a switch and a router can be connected with a straight through cable because the ports on the router and switch are auto detect. I crossover cable works to. Both cables are optional for connecting a router and switch.
