  • In the geography of the state of Hidalgo, the Magic Town of Zempoala stands out, which has a special magic and charm, which has already earned the distinction of Magic Town, for its rich gastronomy. It is arguably a virgin land for tourists looking for unique and different places.
Dominated by the majestic Padre Tembleque Aqueduct, built in the 16th century, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity; the parish and former convent of Todos los Santos; its plain of maguey trees from which "the drink of the gods" is extracted, pulque; its 19 former pulque haciendas and the protected natural area of the El Tecajete volcano, ideal for nature tourism.
To get to know Zempoala, you can dedicate a weekend to it, it can even be a destination to complement a trip to the Costa Smeralda, Veracruz, since to get there you can choose the Ecatepec-Pirámides-Venta de Carpio highway (Pachuca-Tuxpan ). It is located 83 kilometers from Mexico City - approximately 1:30 am by car and 2:00 am by bus.
    What to know?
If you are a weekend traveler, you may well choose Zempoala and discover each of its magical corners, first walking in the spectacular Main Square built where the clergy were located. Its Kiosk stands out, the Dove of Peace that represents Mexico without arms - by the way this municipality has a minimum crime rate-; a French cannon, representative of General Zaragoza's participation in the battle of Puebla that he fought; the statue of Americo Vespucci; the Pillory that around 1525 was installed as a symbol of the Spanish crown and its famous fountain.
Although it seems implausible, on one of its sides stands the majestic Hacienda Casa Grande - owned by one of the founders of the town, Don Cesáreo Encino, which can be visited, and even held events, by prior appointment-; the ejidal house; the municipal presidency and the La Guadalupana bakery, where an old pirul wood-fired oven is preserved, in which the famous Zempoaltecas donkeys are made, stuffed with cheese and honey, and cocoles, according to the chronicler Eladio López Ruíz.
In the surroundings of the square there are various handicraft and grocery stores that will surprise visitors with what they exhibit.
A few steps from the Central Square, surrounded by houses with multi-colored facades that give it a country touch, is the Parish and Ex-convent of Todos Santos, where the Virgen del Refugio is worshiped; It was built from 1570 to 1585 by the Augustinians; It is in the Plateresque style.
The parish has a beautiful tower where the bell tower is located, which you can access after climbing around 100 steps. The open chapel must have been one of the largest in New Spain; highlights its quarry cross in the atrium and a stick for the Zempoala Flyers, who like those of Papantla perform a ritual to the four cardinal points - for the moment, the show is suspended-
Hacienda San Antonio Tochatlaco - open to the public on the first Saturday of each month - it is all a true museum, independent of the one it has, where there are countless objects from the farmers of the early 19th century. When visiting it, the manager Francisco Ramírez, told us about the UFO sighting in September of last year. It has a chapel and 100 beds - divided into sections for women and men.
Hacienda Los Olivos, was formed from 1870 to 1900; in 1991 it had a restoration, preserving its style and furniture. It has been chosen as the setting for soap opera, film, documentary and series productions. It has 3 large rooms and a chapel. Touring its facilities is an adventure that takes the visitor into a very interesting past. Currently the "Tinacal" has been rescued and restored as a museum to the delight of the visitor.
From afar, the traveler is surprised to see the beautiful and majestic hydraulic work built in the middle of the 16th century, the Padre Tembleque Aqueduct, located between the municipalities of Zempoala, Hidalgo and Nopaltepec, Axapusco and Otumba, State of Mexico.
This marvelous work was directed by the friar Francisco de Tembleque, who under the command of numerous indigenous people of the region and after locating the place from the top of the Tecajete volcano, undertook the construction of the aqueduct between 1555 and 1572, achieving a work of little more 48 kilometers long, most of it underground and six aerial actions, the most relevant being the one located in Santiago Tepeyahualco, Zempoala, which reaches 904 meters in length and 38.75 meters in height.
