  • In the premiere episode of Super Friends, an Alien disguised as a British inspector is stealing power from machinery with disastrous results. The Super Friends are being kept so busy preventing calamities, they don't have a whole lot of time to try and figure out who or what is doing this. Irving begins his look back at this intensely popular show.

One of the biggest fads in 60s and 70s cartoons were the Scooby Doo clones. Just like the slasher craze going on in the movies, cartoons centered on teenagers, solving mysteries, with some comedy relief usually in the form of a dog, or other mostly furry, sidekick.

At the time this show came out, the TV execs wanted to get away from violence on children's programming. Thus, at least in the episodes with Marvin and Wendy, they didn't have villains, but made the super heroes battle the natural elements like a dam breaking or a ship in a storm. I found this worked well with this show. I was sorry in the later seasons when they did away with Marvin, Wendy, Wonder Dog and replaced them with the Wonder Twins. Dave, thanks for listening to your audience and always I like your commentary.

From 1976-81, DC published a comic book adaptation of the Super Friends cartoon... which itself was an adaptation of the Justice League of America comic book. Detail-obsessed writer E. Nelson Bridwell reconciled the two books by saying that "Super Friends" was the name of a JLA pilot program for training young superheroes of the future. The first class consisted of Wendy Harris, niece of Harvey Harris, the P.I. who trained young Bruce Wayne in the art of detection; and Marvin White, son of Diana Prince White, a former Army nurse who sold her identity to Wonder Woman when she first arrived in America in exchange for enough money to join her fiance overseas. (Yes, that actually happened in WW's origin story in Sensation Comics #1 in 1942.)
    Wonder Dog defied explanation. 😅

Thank you! This was my absolute FAVORITE Saturday morning cartoon growing up. I knew who Batman, Robin, Aquaman and Superman were from the Filmation cartoons, but this Wonder Woman person was foreign to me as I had not yet been exposed to her comic, and I wondered if she belonged there with these top heroes. She did.

Super Friends was actually Wonder Woman's second TV appearance. Her first was on an episode of "The Brady Kids," a Saturday morning cartoon spin-off of "The Brady Bunch." You can find it on UA-cam.

@@bobbuethe1477 most people tend to forget about Wonder Woman's first appearance there because they forget the Brady Kids even had a cartoon...despite it being a 70's trend that "if you are a celebrity on a popular show...you get a cartoon or you get to meet Scooby-Doo or both" and that was all lampshaded in "Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood"...interestingly..."Cindy" on Johnny Bravo in the 90's gives Scooby some speech therapy lessons.

I was never big on Scooby-Doo myself. I should have realized that show predated this one by a few years, though I don't think was old enough for Saturday morning cartoons when that first premiered. The bunch of teenagers and a dog thing lasted for the rest of the decade, I think.
I'm amazed Superman needed the slippery ground to brace himself. Usually he's fine with just air behind him when he moves objects when flying. Maybe Marvin clocked Supes with a kryptonite rolling pin just before we saw the fight in the Hall of Justice and he's still dealing with the side effects.
If I remember right, Wonder Woman had the gig of being Aquaman's transport for most of the series. I'm not sure why Batman had to rescue her from the damn. She had her own damn lasso. Oh, I'd have left it on when debriefing the alien. Why take a chance?
I think it was only the first year (maybe more; I was a young boy when I watched them first run) where they had these kinds of hour long episodes, with Marvin, Wendy, and Wonder Dog, and they were in this kind of vein. It has it's merits, but I confess I preferred later seasons, where there was segments. The main billing was the Superfriends VS the Legion of Doom. The moral lesson part of the program was handled by the Wonder Twins (who had their own Teen Troubalert and pointy ears so Donny and Marie couldn't sue them for stealing their likeness. They also had a space monkey instead of a dog.), and a solo hero story (I think).

When SF first premiered in 73, all episodes were an hour, but were cancelled at the end of the year. After ABC found unlikely success with Cathy Lee Crosby's live-action Wonder Woman series, for 76-77 the original episodes were brought back, but edited down into 30 min

Hannah-Barbara's first foray into the DCU were two Scooby-Doo/Batman & Robin crossovers a year earlier, with both Joker and Penguin along for the ride. These shows proved they could pull off well-developed hour-long superhero cartoons. Meanwhile, Filmation managed to hang on to Superman for one more episode as a guest star on The Brady Kids series, and even beat HB to the punch with Wonder Woman in another episode of that series. Superfriends was inspired by the Justice League of America comics, with the focus on education and problem solving rather than action.

That's odd...especially when he's there because he knows Wonder Woman personally...his mom is Diana White, the woman formerly known as Diana Prince. Oh wait..."the boy" knows Wonder Woman...that was probably why...and he was implied to actually have similar Wonder abilities...which meant he could only glide and maybe he had super strength too, but he couldn't get anything else.
I also wonder if given the design and year of release if instead of Frank as Marvin White...the HB team wanted Christopher Knight...given how he was pretty much the "local Grayson" of that day.

As a little kid in the mid 70’s The Super Friends was one of the coolest shows of the time. I was introduced to comic books and super heroes by age 4 and being able to see those characters in tv as cartoons was the best.

Thanks for reviewing what was my FAVORITE cartoon as a kid (though now it it seems very juvenile). I already knew Superman, Batman, Robin and Aquaman from the Filmation cartoons, but I was wondering who this "Wonder Woman" person was, as I hadn't been exposed to her yet.

Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog were only nominally Scooby-Doo like. They never rose to the level of annoying. They really did a good job showcasing everyone's abilities, and when Wendy asked questions, the adults paid attention. I grew weary of the "I've got to " dialog, but it had great moments. And down the line, Adam West joined the cast, but that's years away. This was an unexpected treat from you. 😊

And, when I feel down, the Super Friends theme gets me motivated. The comics are also VERY good, drawn by the impeccable Ramona Fradon and written by the amazing E. Nelson Bridwell.

Never expected you to do this show, but I'm happy to see it.
I know no one asked me, specifically, but as a big DC mark, this show is...off for me. Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't hate it, or anything, and the novelty isn't lost. At the time, where else would you see all these DC legends, in the same show. The problem is presentation. If you're a big Superman fan (as I am), in many episodes, he came off like a million bucks. But Batman, Wonder Woman, and poor Aquaman, were basically there to cheer Superman on. There were episodes that highlighted the others, but mainly, it was just very simple, nondescript disasters, the others would stall, until Superman showed up. I enjoyed later iterations better. Challenge of the Superfriends, and the Power Hour were more my speed. They brought in the villains, more main eventers, like Green Lantern and Flash, more focus was put on stories, even brought in Adam West, for a bit. Early Superfriends, it felt like they were trying to stay as basic, as possible.
All that rambling done, it is a great time capsule, what the DCU looked like, in Saturday morning format, not in the comics, at the time, when Ra's Al Ghul, Joker, and Lex Luthor would doing anything but being kid friendly.

A classic cartoon from my dads era (born 1968, forget what generation that is haha) I of course know it from reruns on Cartoon Network I believe & parodies from Family Guy & Robot Chicken. I also believe this is the show that cemented Aquaman as a joke in the public eyes.. a fate which took the character decades to shed off (and still hasnt fully recovered tbh)
*P.S* You were correct on everything as far as i know!
