Forging a Drawknife from an Old Metal File

  • I'm making a drawknife from an old file that I found on the scrap yard. After Annealing the file I forged it into the desired shape and bent the tangs to recieve the handles that I've turned from beech firewood. After the steel has cooled down slowly ive burned the handles to get a perfect fit. For the hardening process, I heated the steel to a non-magnetic state and quenched the edge in pre-warmed vegetable oil. After the hardening was done i tempered the edge to a dark straw color. Afterward, the handles were glued on with two-part epoxy and additional copper ferrules. The handles were coated with boiled linseed oil.

Great job as always! One thought what came to mind: next time, when you have to heat-treat the edge only, consider using the own heat of a workpiece to temper it (right after quenching the edge only) There's a great chance that it will be more than enough to reach the hay-color and saves you time to heat up another piece of steel. If you'd like to know more about it, just dm me! Congrats on the vid!

Great work Sebastian! That old file didn’t even see it coming lol this goes to show you, when you think there isn’t any life left in an old tool, and then you make this beautiful thing with something pulled out of the rust bucket ;)

OK - be honest! Did you do this on the first attempt? Because that seems like you've made these a dozen times before! Using old tool steel is the best! And I really loved that you got those awesome handles from the firewood pile. And a thanks for the idea of putting a heel on my stropping block - sticking that in the vise is genius!
You hit it out of the park with this one.

Annealing before forging does absolutely nothing. Once you're at a forging temperature everything structurally done to the steel by previous heat treating has been undone.
