Forging a Drawknife from an Old Metal File
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- I'm making a drawknife from an old file that I found on the scrap yard. After Annealing the file I forged it into the desired shape and bent the tangs to recieve the handles that I've turned from beech firewood. After the steel has cooled down slowly ive burned the handles to get a perfect fit. For the hardening process, I heated the steel to a non-magnetic state and quenched the edge in pre-warmed vegetable oil. After the hardening was done i tempered the edge to a dark straw color. Afterward, the handles were glued on with two-part epoxy and additional copper ferrules. The handles were coated with boiled linseed oil.
Thank you very much for watching!

Really cool project and video!
Thanks Bruce!
Amazing work dude. That you can turn a useless old tool into something that great is a wonderful thing. 😊👍
Isn’t it? That’s one of the reasons why i wanted to get into blacksmithing.
Clamping a Vise in a Vise, love it! :D
Great Project, always nice to make your own tools!
😅 Thanks!
Very nicely done! I half expected music when you started hammering 😉
Haha!
Great job as always! One thought what came to mind: next time, when you have to heat-treat the edge only, consider using the own heat of a workpiece to temper it (right after quenching the edge only) There's a great chance that it will be more than enough to reach the hay-color and saves you time to heat up another piece of steel. If you'd like to know more about it, just dm me! Congrats on the vid!
Thanks man! I’ll try that.
Great job, it's so amazing recycle things and to give another function. Congrats.
Thanks!
Was not expecting the need to put on an all white silk suit and take ecstasy when the lathe was turned on.
Hahahahaha! 😂🤣
well done!
Thanks!
Another great project! I really like the copper detail on the handles!
Thank you very much!
Great work Sebastian! That old file didn’t even see it coming lol this goes to show you, when you think there isn’t any life left in an old tool, and then you make this beautiful thing with something pulled out of the rust bucket ;)
Thanks Leo!
You are welcome Sebastian! Keep those projects coming, I enjoy the quality of your work
I really wish my lathe sounded like yours 😂 superb job my friend. Loving the spalted beech 👍
Like a 90’s disco? 😅 thanks Alan!

Little warping from the quench, but overall a damn nice draw knife!!
Cheers!
Beau travail .
Egész ügyes! Én is tervezem, hogy készítek egy vonókést (nagyobb csapágy külső gyűrűjéből) a téli időszakban. Remélem hasonlóan jól sikerül majd.
Biztos vagyok benne hogy jó lessz! 😉
awesome!
A shaving horse would be the perfect companion for your new drawknife. Just saying. Keep up the good work.
You are right! That would be a great project! Thanks for watching!
u can everything..thats so stunning.. i would want to know and do what u are able to
Whaddaya mean you forge doesnt sound like Idk, wavy sea or something?!? 😁 Aah, ok, your electrical tools are still fine.. Very nice build! Creators like you really make me want to try that stuff myself too!
Hahahahaha! Great idea, might do that!
Nice draw knife, Sebastian. You should get plenty of use from it.
Billy
Thanks Billy! I hope so.
🆒!
That is a pre 1800 anvil! How do you make to silence the ring?
Tolles Ergebnis!!! 😎🤙
Dankeschön!
Sweeeeeet 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Well done.
Mostly used bevel down, right?
Gotta ask, why did you anneal it before you forged it?
Pont ma vettem egyet a piacon, erre meg jön a videó, hogy csinálni is lehet :-D
Jó lessz az mintának! 😉
Would this work to make it from coil spring?
I think you could make one.
Ollari's then again, I think it would be better to practise making one on a file then use coil spring for a good one
Dear Ollaris thats a beauty, very fine job.
Mennyi időt vett igénybe? Bizos elfáradt a kezed ennyi kalapálástól 😁
Nem vittem túlzásba... kb 1 hónapja kezdtem..😂
OK - be honest! Did you do this on the first attempt? Because that seems like you've made these a dozen times before! Using old tool steel is the best! And I really loved that you got those awesome handles from the firewood pile. And a thanks for the idea of putting a heel on my stropping block - sticking that in the vise is genius!
You hit it out of the park with this one.
Thanks a lot man! Yes, it was my first attempt, but you know, the editing makes it look much easier.
Dig the brass detail!!!
Annealing before forging does absolutely nothing. Once you're at a forging temperature everything structurally done to the steel by previous heat treating has been undone.
It turned out to be a great tool!
Thanks 😊!
