  • It's a rarity that I ever talk about games that are based off of movies or TV, and the mini reviews are a great opportunity to talk about a game based on one of my favorite film franchises, Jurassic Park. As a kid, I always wanted a park simulator games set around these movies, though I never got the chance to grow up with one. Will Evolution 2 be that game I've been waiting for though?
    00:00 - 00:40 - Intro
    00:40 - 06:17 - Thoughts On Jurassic Park Movies
    06:17 - 17:05 - Evolution 2 Review
Jurassic World: Evolution 2 is a 2021 game based on the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies, a couple of them by Steven Spielberg and also based on the Michael Crichton novels. Jurassic World: Evolution 2 is a park simulator, where you can create the park of your desires and fill it with all sorts of dinosaurs. This is my Trash or Treasure mini review on Jurassic World: Evolution 2 for the PS4, PS4, PCs, and the latest Xbox models.

I love this game, i just preferred the campaign from the first. The dlc, and chaos theory missions were more fun. Now the first's, going between the islands and managing them? Yeah, MUCH more fun.

Yeah the campaign in this one before any DLC dropped was basically a boring tutorial
Granted there were enough new systems that you needed to learn them but it just wasn't presented in a way that was exciting

I love this franchise, the original film is my favorite movie of all time and I don't even have to think twice about it
I grew up playing Jurassic Park operation Genesis on the original Xbox, which was for all intents and purposes basically the same game
So when they announced the original Jurassic World evolution I was pumped. And that game released with a lot of flaws, however despite that I was still massively hooked. By the end of that game's lifespan they changed a hell of a lot of it and added a lot of new features and made the dinosaurs more immersive. I probably put like 200 hours into that damn game
I of course was pumped to learn of the sequel as well. And while I think it does in its own ways managed to be a better game, I haven't put nearly the same amount of time into it and ultimately was a bit disappointed in some things. I thought the campaign was atrocious, just a long tutorial. From there on out trying chaos theory maps started to get tedious too because there's way more micromanaging in this game compared to the original. Some things are cool, others just feel like tedious busy work implemented under the guise of being a deeper park management system. All of this serves to keep me away from actually looking at the dinosaurs. Dinosaur behavior and AI is better overall, however they still tend to clip into each other a lot, and carnivores do this weird zig zag side shuffle running out of nowhere.
And man when this game launched it was buggy as hell. I was playing on Xbox 1X at the time. When I upgraded to the series X version I was hoping that that would smooth out a lot of things, and for a bit it did. I got less screen tearing and juttering. Until my park got to be pretty populated, and then it kind of came back.
Dinosaurs were teleporting out of their enclosures. Dinosaurs were freezing in place and starving to death. Now with the latest update I was getting that problem for my marine animals. Flying reptiles that died wouldn't be registered for removal and that flare was just infinitely burning on top of their dead bodies in the enclosure. Just all kinds of jank
They've released all this DLC but I always felt like with each new one I would try the game out and it looked like the bugs weren't fixed
My last complaint with it, and even though the original didn't do this for you, it's just that you had to re-unlock every single thing for sandbox mode. Considering I put so much time into the original game I felt like I was going through a tedious grind to unlock all of these things that I already had available to me before.
Finally however they have made it so that every dinosaur, every building, every technology, and every map is available in sandbox. So now this game instantly managed to bring back appeal for me to play it. And they did a good job, DLC maps are cool, the ability to just randomly create large square maps like JPOG is cool, there are so many awesome species of dinosaurs. And you can tinker with it to your heart's content to adjust which things are more difficult and which things you can just infinitely create to your heart's extent.
I do commend frontier for supporting these games for such a long time after launch. It's nice to see that there's always a free update alongside DLCs that add new things and ideally fix some things too.
I've been able to create some interesting parks, my only last complaint which is one I had from the first game is I wish all these buildings didn't have to be connected to the damn path in order to work
It prevents me from doing what I really want to do which is just create a proper site B. I just want to let a bunch of dinosaurs loose from hatcheries around a map and see what they do
But I can get pretty close at least
