It would be awesome if they can add an attribute enhance System to a fighting game like a GEM for super jump, Fast Dash, fast recovery, etc. Anything that doesn't changes the frame Data of strike moves
I know I'm a casual player, but I think one of my favorite fighting games ever was Soul Caliber 3. It had a whole other game in it where you could build an army for campaigns almost like a Fire Emblem. It feels like new fighting games never have fun stuff like that anymore. It would be cool if you did a podcast talking about the best features, side content, etc you've seen in fighting games.
@@TheNeoLoneWolf funny enough, the next episode of TKO seems to be focused on single-player content. but VesperArcade recently posted a video that also nails what you're talking about. it's called "WHY AREN'T FIGHTING GAMES FUN? How To Grow Our Player Base" -- I'd recommend watching it, as it has a lot of great ideas that draw from older fighters w/those fun modes.
Justin is really starting to shine on the podcast, love to see it! His and Matt's sponsored section was easily the best advertising I've ever seen in any media given how authentic and light hearted it felt. Already adored Max and Matt's work, now Justin is definetely up there in regards to fighting game community creators. Best episode so far, please keep 'em coming! As a side note, if you ever consider guests for this podcast, perhaps jmcrofts? Liked his videos with Justin, would be cool to see him interacting with the rest of the cast.
Easily your best episode. You guys are really hitting your stride. The chemistry among the three of you was really palpable here and the nature of the topic allowed for great conversation. It would be cool to see an episode discussing your memories of arcades growing up. You touched on it a little bit here, but it would be really fun to hear you deviate a little from fighting games to talk about the general arcade experience and playing those “top floor” games.
I can't believe Max forgot about Fight of Gods or Fight of Animals. Those are great examples of modern poverty fighting games. Jank as hell, but sick as fuck!
I remember when Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid was considered poverty. It has grown so much since its initial release that I don't know if it still counts as such.
I played BftG on release for quite a while and that game was NEVER considered poverty. Niche? Maybe. A cheaper MvC? Sure. Poverty? No, I disagree with you 1000%
Rage Of the Dragons actually has a fun little story relating to King Of Fighters. What happened was Brezzasoft, which was essentially SNK after OG SNK went bankrupt, approached mexican studio Evoga to make a fighting game, namely Rage Of The Dragons, and while there the people of Brezzasoft challenged Evoga to a match of KOF98. Should Brezzasoft win, they get to design a character for Rage Of The Dragons and Evoga had to pay them $5000, should Evoga win they get to request a character for KOF 2001. What resulted was basically Evoga kicking Brezzasofts ass and Evoga then going "we want a hot mexican girl fighter with big tiddies." And that's how Angel came to be.
I went to Chinatown Fair once in 2010 and played on the very same Rumble Fish 2 cab Justin mentioned. I'm happy that he was responsible for that game being there in the first place.
My absolute No1 fave 'poverty fighting game' series is Tobal. I was one of the few, locally, who'd heard of it and, simply put, I really enjoyed it. Then of course we have (imo) the incredible Tobal 2 with the quest mode, grapple system, innovative use of HML attacks per button, wild combo system, costume colour customisation (RGB sliders per garment), incredible soundtrack, beautiful full 3D visuals that smashed along at 60fps and, for me, created the concept of full 3D combat movement with up/down leading to the foreground/background respectively (was Soul Calibur the next game to use this? Certainly Tekken and VF didn't adopt it until the 4 iterations of each series). *Sigh* one of the greatest 3D fighters that just never was unfortunately. Very surprised to not hear Tattoo Assassins from you guys! My buddies and I used to have bad fighting game tournaments that included Bloodstorm, Time Killers, Survival Arts, etc. and Tattoo Assassins used to be the final game. Such a bad, janky, fun game!
Time Killers and Eternal Champions were probably my 2 favorite poverty games growing up. Time Killers is probably number 1 and I literally NEVER hear anyone mention it. That game was fun as hell lol.
I literally came here to mention both of these. I had a Sega CD growing up and my Dad was really annoyed at me for not getting the Star Wars game for my birthday instead of Eternal Champions as game of choice. I played so much of that game for the next six months along with Sewer Shark. Time Killers was the second fighting game I ever played (Karate Champ was first). I went to one of those Go Kart/Pool Hall/Arcade places from the early 90's and that game has a special place in my heart even though it took the very little cash I had super fast.
I'm so happy they brought up Melty Blood towards the end lol. I literally joined in the countdown and totally wasn't expecting us to be on the same wave length.
Just gonna list out some of my poverty games here (sorry if one or more arent poverty exactly): -Akatsuki Blitzkampf -Variable Geo -Savage Reign -Ninja Masters -Golden Axe: The Duel -Ragnagard -Kabuki Klash -Astra Superstars -Aggressors of Dark Kombat -Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer -Kizuna Encounter -World Heroes 2 -Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors -Rage of Dragons -Groove on Fight -The Rumble Fish -Inuyasha a Feudal Fairly Tail -Zero Divide -Real Robots Final Attack -Gundam Battle Assault 2 -Armed Fighter -Vs. -Psychic Force -Vanguard Princess -Big Bang Beat yeah its a reaaaaally huge list but those are some of the ones i played over the years or some that i come back from time to time.
Mentioned but my favourite has got to be Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire, remember seeing the digitised sprites for the 1st time and thinking it was a what if Jackie Chan was in MK. As for modern games considered poverty fighters I would go to Fight of Gods and Nick All-Star Brawl.
Eternal Champions was my childhood fighting game, and to this day, I consider Xavier to be one of the coolest characters I've ever encountered in a fighting game.
After hearing Melty Blood being mentioned, I thought of Arcana Heart, a buddy of mine is obsessed with it but it strikes me as a very poverty type fighting game...
Arcana Heart is basically the DOA of anime fighters afaik The game is fun as hell and has a lot of depth, but you'll have to fight to beat the allegations
I'm really surprised no one mentioned Fight of Gods and Fight of Animals, those games are true jank poverty gems. Thank you guys for putting out bangers over and over, see you in the basement for the Dong Dong nationals
I remember owning Tao Feng: Fist Of The Lotus, the Genesis version of TMNT: Tournament Fighters (which I thought was trash compared to the SNES version), the Power Ranger SNES fighting game, KI1 & KI Gold. A few of my cousins had Virtua Fighter 1, Tekken 3, & even Primal Rage. Man, those were the days for me in terms of this topic. I kinda regret giving away Tao Feng back then. I'm still looking for a good copy to this day.
They met because they were both contracted to make the same game without knowledge of the other version. Their booths were right next to each other at an industry event; I don't remember if it was E3 or CES.
One of my dreams is to run a tournament of all the “poverty” fighting games I own. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 1, Castlevania Judgment, Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax (vanilla, Ignition has a scene), Godzilla Unleashed, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle, Kill la Kill IF, Sonic the Fighters, and the main stage event, Arm Joe.
27:59 I love Rage of the Dragons. If there is one thing from that game that should be imported to modern KOFs, it's that they had both the neutral dodge from KOFs 94/95 as 5AB and the roll from 96 onward as 4AB or 6AB.
I'm glad Battle Monsters got a mention. Also I like Battle Arena Toshinden. I only first played it 10 or so years ago and, yes, it's super slow and janky... but fun. I loved Duke's Southern Cross partially due to how slow it was... and the full version... can that even fully hit anyone? And I agree, has some great music. As for my favorite Poverty games... Battle Monsters and Asuka 120%. Skullgirls was also mentioned but I don't consider it poverty enough.
My personal poverty FG is Gundam Battle Assault 2. I just have one other friend who loves that game. I also like playing SVC Chaos and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. Also I don’t know if it’s poverty, but I love Project Justice and I constantly boot it up whenever I play Dreamcast.
One that I enjoy that I don't know counts as a poverty game is Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm. It's pretty interesting because it takes some cool stuff like Third Strike-style parries and a mix of kind of KOF/SNK style gameplay and older Capcom gameplay. Also, Max is featured in that game as a selectable commentator in that game. Also, I have a lot of nostalgia for the old X-Men Mutant Academy and Next Dimension games.
A poverty fighter games list/discussion would not be complete without mentioning TMNT Tournament fighter. Sick Music, awesome visuals, and a surprising amount of tournaments for tournament fighter.
I love that Melty Blood was mentioned mostly because I'm part of the community of that game, but if i have to choose my favorite poverty fighter it's gonna be Touhou 12.3 Hisoutensoku.
Great and interesting topic! I'm with Justin, my favorite poverty game is Rage of the Dragons for the Neo Geo, I highly recommend it to anyone that loves fighting games.
The Double Dragon Neo Geo fighter was actually in Little Tokyo(J-Town) Los Angeles back in the day. I remember playing it mostly because it could be an hour wait for Virtua Fighter, MK, or SF to open up some weekends.
Almost makes too much sense. Sailor Moon Crystal was a thing not too long ago. You'd think they'd make a game just to ride that wave of relevance. However they should go with the Classic Anime style charm for the gane.
Shoutouts to Colorful Fighters. The most poverty of Arcsys' fighters that they gave no online to or separated it from the weird Subspace megaman game they attatched it to
I adore poverty fighters or just any kind of out of the way or weird fighting game. Maximum Impact, Karnov, Dengeki Bunko, Nitroplus. I love when really dedicated scenes pop around these janky games and really turn up the hype for them, it's just so special
Funnily enough Condor pitched the idea of Diablo to Blizzard thanks to the Justice League ports connection. Condor ended up being Blizzard North and they are the team behind Diablo.
Roughly 15 years ago? I always thought poverty fighting games meant we couldn't afford to buy games for various reasons and so we'd pirate Comiket fighting games to play. Main examples being EFZ, MBR, BBB, IaMP, SWR, Akatsuki Blitzkampf, and CRUCIS FATAL+FAKE to name a few. And some genius coders would write up some netplay executables just so we could versus online, such as mbcaster--which was derived from IaMP's caster. If you know all the games I abbreviated, then kudos. MB series eventually exploded to have MBAC on PS2, arcades, and a PC port (2007) that wasn't just sold at Comiket. Akatsuki Blitzkampf somehow managed to get an arcade port. mbcaster was for Melty Blood Act Cadenza PC port IaMP's caster had rollback netcode added some time after mbcaster's creation EFZ - Eternal Fighter Zero MBR - Melty Blood Re-ACT BBB - Big Bang Beat IaMP - Immaterial and Missing Power SWR - Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
I remember the first Evo Japan having a fairly big side tournament for one of the SNES Ranma 1/2 fighting games. There's definitely a community for that game over there, both that and the other SNES Ranma fighting game that did get an English translated version back in the day.
Would Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring count as poverty? I remember trying my damnedest to get my friends to play on PS1 purely because I thought Cloud and the other FF7 characters being there was the coolest thing ever haha
I would second this! I played it late like 10+ years after, bc I was trying to catch up on PS1 Final Fantasies and Ehrgeiz caught my eye and I was like wow damn ok nevermind 😂 Dissidia came such a long way in comparison!
43:18 - The reason why we never got a port of Fighters Megamix was because during that era. Sega was doing a collection of Sega Model 2 arcade ports with online support. Japan got two additional games that we never received over in the west. Which were Virtua Striker and Virtual-On. Fighters Megamix was a Saturn only game and they were not focusing on Saturn ports at the time. Would still be nice to get a port of it on modern consoles though.
I think there IS control stick fighting, Matt, it was Buriki One and and is a strong contender for poverty because of the Neo Geo 64 rarity. And I have fond memories of the SNES Ranma 1/2 fighting game, but it is 100% poverty.
Both Justice Leagues were made by Blizzard. Condor is Blizzard North. They're the ones who made Diablo. Justice League is how the two companies met, which eventually led to Blizzard acquiring Condor.
I wished you guys had talked about the rage of the dragons development history because snk lost a bet against the devs of that game, which lead to Angel's creation
Another awesome episode! I couldn't listen in yesterday and I felt empty, now I'm whole again! Jejejeje I got to say, my poverty game I think it is Psychic Force, probably nobody remembers it and for good reason, it was so bad but so good. More than anything I loved the intro theme and the main characters Burn and Keith.
Oh my God. My local arcade had Rumble Fish 1 and Rumble Fish 2. I remember it's little selling point where you could see your character getting more and more beat up as the match went on. I played that game and had a lot of fun. It's been a kick in the head trying to track down a copy of it to import or even emulate.

It's still and will always be badass

Not sure if this qualifies, but X-Men: Next Dimension and Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects have a special place in my heart.

Shoutouts to Colorful Fighters. The most poverty of Arcsys' fighters that they gave no online to or separated it from the weird Subspace megaman game they attatched it to
I found it hilarious how fast everyone agreed when Justin mentioned Street Fighter The Movie lmao
Not sure if it counts but shoutout to Kirby Fighters 2, genuinely a really fun platform fighter with great aesthetics and singleplayer content.
The poverty fighter from my childhood was Fighter Destiny 1&2 on the N64. A point based 3d fighter. Unique still to this day.
PS1, Unholy War. Super underrated arena fighter + strategy game adjacent.
I recalled an old DOS game that was loosely similar to Time Killers...it was called Time Slaughter....it definitely had a "charm" to it...😂😂
I literally had to pause this video to go and look up the "Slam Master" mechanic.
I was not disappointed.
i'm disappointed no one mentioned the father of Kof'99 "Daraku Tenshi: The Fallen Angels "
Unique looking game. Sort of a Garou Mark of The Wolves with a Workd War 2 Aesthetic.
God, I'm still waiting for the Switch release for Breakers
Street Fighter EX3 is definitely a poverty fighter. EX3 is the BEST BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
I agree with you.
Akatsuki Blitzkampf somehow managed to get an arcade port.
mbcaster was for Melty Blood Act Cadenza PC port
IaMP's caster had rollback netcode added some time after mbcaster's creation
EFZ - Eternal Fighter Zero
MBR - Melty Blood Re-ACT
BBB - Big Bang Beat
IaMP - Immaterial and Missing Power
SWR - Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
Big Bang Beat was so fun, but so janky mechanically. It was like poverty Guilty Gear for me.
Rage of the Dragons is such a fun game. I wish more people played.
Soon enough with the re-release!
I think every fighting game that's not street fighter, MvC, Tekken and KoF counts as poverty fighting game
I would second this! I played it late like 10+ years after, bc I was trying to catch up on PS1 Final Fantasies and Ehrgeiz caught my eye and I was like wow damn ok nevermind 😂 Dissidia came such a long way in comparison!
Great episode, I love how Matt is basicly the king of poverty games haha
Aggressors of Dark Kombat, man... I still have nostalgia moments with this game...
Visceral memories brought to the surface at the mention of Last Bronx.
LMAO best Manscaped plug ever!
Eternal Champions for Devo
My favorite thing in Gem Fighter is Demetri sliding across the floor in the background on one of the stages 😊
The reaction to the very mention of Tao Feng was beautiful 😆
I felt that one...
Evil Zone was definitely a poverty game........and ......i......love......it!
Blizzard and Blizzard North are ostensibly the same company but they're actually pretty different, practically speaking.
I waited 1 and a half hours for you to mention it. worth it.
I love how Maximilian isn't present during the manscaped promo because he apparently hasn't used a razor in decades.
I mean he did shave last year
Every time Max says "dank" I die a little bit inside
"Well done chicken". Justin don't worry, me and the bro's got some games in rumble fish back in the day. Thanks for the influence
Pokemon Type Wild and Battle CAPacity are 2 great Pokemon themed struggle fighters
I want them to have a topic about Boxing games, Wrestling games, and MMA and how these are or are not fighting games.
I would say my Povery game is the Naruto Ultimate Ninja games. My brother, his friend and I would have matches in those games for hours on end!
I wished you guys had talked about the rage of the dragons development history because snk lost a bet against the devs of that game, which lead to Angel's creation
KOF's Angel? Interesting story, do you have a link?
Another awesome episode! I couldn't listen in yesterday and I felt empty, now I'm whole again! Jejejeje I got to say, my poverty game I think it is Psychic Force, probably nobody remembers it and for good reason, it was so bad but so good. More than anything I loved the intro theme and the main characters Burn and Keith.
I am shocked that J. Wong didn't say Arcana Hearts at all.
ArcSys Sailor Moon fighting game PLEASE. That would be godlike!!
We dont talk about Double Dragon 5.... but the one Justin was talking about was dope. I played it at a camping lodge place when i was 11
Oh my God. My local arcade had Rumble Fish 1 and Rumble Fish 2. I remember it's little selling point where you could see your character getting more and more beat up as the match went on. I played that game and had a lot of fun. It's been a kick in the head trying to track down a copy of it to import or even emulate.
Max comment on Fighters Generation page was so on point, that's internet nostalgia right there. But the content is 👍👌
Dude, that Melty-Blood bit had me rolling on the floor.
