For newbies, I like Valfrejus for 1st Alps experience, then Val d'Isere, which can actually be done on the cheap. Lift -tickets are dirt cheap compared to US, and there are lots of "condos" on the edge of town that are quite reasonable, short and free bus-ride to the lifts.

Val d"Isere has lots and lots of condos, with a free bus system that runs past most of them into town.
