If Novak was injured which clearly he was, what would you expect him to do? Quite ridiculous saying that he wasn’t when he wanted to win for a record 25th GS!! M cEnroe should keep his opinions to himself. Hes hardly in the same league as Novak!!!!!

Great, great, honest, believes in himself not in the least touched by the commercialised statements of others who think that media make them more significant, which is inexcusable for McEnroe' s age.

McEnroe did not say this. He basically said don’t count Novak out just because he has an injury timeout. This is a fake story.

Out of 434 slam matches, Novak withdrew just from 7 and some were prior to 2010 when he had Gluten allergy.
Out of total 1355 matches he played, he withdrew from just 14 which is just a fraction and most were prior to 2010.
Despite such a glaring statistical fact, a vicious canard is being propogated through a systematic campaign by vested interests caricaturing him as a "faker" and "quitter" to tarnish his image, reputation and regard for principles and values in life.

Oh, yes! Novak is crazy that facking injuries and retires when he was so near 25 th GS title! And after win against main rival Carlos Alcaraz!!
Some people are sick of hating Biggest Novak achievemens Only because he is from Serbia , from Eastern Europe , not some of their favorites as Federer , Nadal , Sinner , Acaraz from westerm Europe or USA and Australia wich ancentors are mainly from western Europe too .
Tragically situation from The Greatest Athlete Ever with no any shadow of doubt , but most of them don't want to see it and aproving.
I'm sorry for Western People who loves Novak maybe more than me as a Serb i appreciate them very very much! They are amazing good , justiful and smart people!

I am an Irish-American, and my favorite players, in order, have been Novak, Santoro, and Karlovic. I like many more players as well, but these three were the most fun to watch, and the most likable guys. It’s amazing how Eastern Europeans have been so dominant in a world sport like tennis, especially on the women’ side. At tone point, about 60 per cent of the top female players were Eastern European or children of Eastern European emigrants. Canada had a big surge is top players a few years ago, but they were all Eastern Europeans! Andreescu, Raonic, Pospisil, Shapavalov……. The USA had Kenin and that blonde Russian girl whose father died…Switzerland had Hingis, Germany had Zverev, Denmark had Wozniacki, Australia had Dokic and Tomic…..even Kyrgios, if you consider Greece in the east….

I used to love McEnroe, but he needs to choose his words wisely. He used to back up Djokovic. So, I don't really know what all this is about. If Novak could not continue and if he knew that a medical timeout would not help, why spend time on that? And he respects Zverev!

The fool McEnroe also talked about "change of gards" when Federer lost to Tsitsipas in the AO of 2019. The big three continued to dominate for several years after that while Tsitsipas hasn't accomplished much.

He was hoping to take out the match in three sets carrying the injury. After losing the first set, he rushed his decision to retire. Clearly, he could have played on to four sets, robbing the crowd who paid good money for this match. At 37, maybe Father Time is calling to retire altogether.

There is an epidemic among many top players that claim injuries when matches are tight. It helps to change the momentum and maybe buy some extra time and regroup. The officials are powerless to stop it because there is no way to prove whether an injury is real or fake.

    • @NorsePJ

Yeah, retiring from a match and a tournament is such a winning move. And by the way, a torn hamstring, muscle or tendon can indeed be proven as true by medical experts. I know from my own experience.

@ All I said was that top players use injury timeouts as a tactic. Novak has been known to use the tactic. In 2006 against Wawrinka in the Davis Cup, against Roddick in 2008 US Open, against Lehecka 2024 United Cup,. Not just McEnroe but also John Alexander, Federer have said that Novak uses time-outs as a strategy.

At Djokovic level... It is quiet evident that he would enter the final only if he us 100%...and obviously Sinner had the best chance of getting to final... So facing Sinner.. He certainly has to be 200%.(i know people will say Djokovic also entered Wimbledon in 2024 not 100% but sinner on hard court is a different beast altogether unlike Alcaraz on grasscourt)
So having said that, the mountaneous ego at his level enticed him to select to just leave the court after first set rather than getting defeated by sinner in 3 sets and possibly 1 bagel.
