Bob is a genius. Listen to the youtube videos of all the playin jams from ‘73. He is a jazz player with impeccable taste. Also, the Allman show he sat in on Mt Jam in ‘73. He added so much to that jam, one of the best sit-ins of rock.
Agree with others who have pointed out how deep and wide Bob Weir’s guitar genius goes. His harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic choices - and incredible ability to adjust and pivot in response to the musicians sharing the stage with him - are worthy of intense study and admiration.
I have been learning in Bobby’s style for a little over a year now and it has absolutely opened the door wide open in terms of understanding triads, the caged system and voicings. I can’t recommend diving into it if you haven’t it’s a great way to develop as a rhythm player and so much fun. Great job summarizing all of this loved this video
It feels like once you understand the concept, you don't need to think about what you are playing, it feels like you are just experiencing it, just going wherever it leads you, it becomes automatic, natural, organic
Hey dude, I think you’re the man! The way you analyze imporvise music is dope as hex, but moreso what you provide for guitar players is the dabkest. It’s very kind of you to create all that you have and share it so liberally. It is much appreciated!!
I'm sure you get lots of requests Jeff. But now what we could really use is some insight into how the hell he gets from Truckin to The Other One! Especially late 72 and 73... 9/30/72 he's really loud in the mix, would make a great template. Keep rockin'!
His playing is typical camouflaged in the mix with GD- when separated it can sound sharp and angular and perhaps a bit tough to appreciate- but without it,man it really becomes obvious-MaxLove 4 Bob GD forever!!
Ive understood everything you showed. You got a gift to teach. Thank you. (Is my head supposed to hurt when cramming it full? lol) How Bob knew what he did, At his age. And in the 60s! Its beyond me. "I look up to him for sure"
JEFF, In the 80s live concerts which you can get on DVD or watch on youtube during the JAM sections Bob Weir uses so unusual chord voicings, sus chords, extensions which you should watch over and over the JAMs in the 80's concerts to make a video lesson on what chord voices is Bob Weir using. I'm not sure if all the JAMs chord progressions are always bVII to I or try to figure out the JAMS chord progressions also.
I can't recommend it enough! If you ever get one use this link: bit.ly/jwcrossroads I'm an affiliate for B&G and am working towards getting one of their private builds. Then I'm gonna set this one up for slide in open E.
THANK YOU! for the cheat sheet. Just learning the fretboard and I was going to do it myself. JW to the rescue! Love it....Oh yeah...I subscribed as well. 💛
I've played guitar for decades. And I've adored Bob Weird for decades. I'm ok at the guit-fiddle, but I can't do pinky things very well! My pinky is almost TOO attached to my ring finger on my left hand. I have trouble controlling it and sometimes it just feels like a limp noodle over there Haha. Well, Bobby's stuff gets difficult because of that sometimes. Love him so much though!
I’m sure many have asked already but, what kind of guitar is that? Thanks Jeff it’s very refreshing watching a player like yourself who also seems to be into my favorite band! 🙏
I cannot make heads or tails of music theory. It all sounds like gibberish to me. "Use the C shape to play the open A chord except it sounds better when you don't and you just play pieces of a chord called a triad which is just three notes because three notes makes a chord except when it's suspended and then it doesn't. That's what Hendrix did." Fuuuuuuuuck, I just want to strum a guitar, how much theory does it take?
Thing about Bob Weir is, he's not a very good guitarist. Rhythmically...he's mediocre. He wrote some good songs with the help of Jerry, Phil , Hunter & Barlowe, but all in all....highly overrated.
In the context of the Dead, he’s a genius. One example would be Morning Dew from their Europe 72 album. That said , lotta people don’t care for the dead.. whatchagunnado.

He's got my admiration for sure!
Jeff the reason I don’t always finish your videos is because you have given me an insight new to me regarding the fretboard! Thanks!
Thank you Jeff!!! Comping with the relative minors (F#m and Em) is just magic! Texturely rich and dynamic!!

Favorite UA-camr. Production, taste, and lessons are amazing
Glad you like them!
Great video Jeff. Thanks for all the resources. Grew up loving the allman bros and dead. You have really helped me jam to both. 😊

Jeff this is such a deep cut. Great Work Sir!!
That was awesome man! I've always loved rhythm guitar and especially Bobby's mystical voicings so this sure was an informative treat. Thanks!

Great lesson Jeff - thanks so much!
Thanks and no prob!
Thanks again Jeff - love all of your vids. (PDF not arriving btw - I subscribed.)
Sometimes the email takes a little while to go through. Let me know if you still didn't get it. (oh, and check your spam folder just in case)
Good stuff, Jeff! You know I lust that guitar!

No prob Steve, glad it's helpful.
Great lesson, Jeff!
Jeff, great video as always! Any chance you would make a backing track (or lesson) of the Spanish Jam from June 26/28, 1974?

No prob. It’s a B&G Little Sister Crossroads: bit.ly/jwcrossroads
that guitar is gorgeous
Thank you
A triad IS a full chord.
Can you share the make and model of your guitar? Sounds really cool.

Jeff, which Dead concert with Dark Star were you using?
Veneta 72
Catholics have the Pope. Buddhists have the Dali-Lama. We have Bobby Weir.
he plays partial chords with percussive, syncopated piano clusters

Good guitar playing isn’t boomer blues all the time.
