I had an impression last July to not wear my garments to a kid camp I go to each year. I get heat exhaustion very easily and each year I go there I get over heated and I have to be so careful. I have learned so much this past few years and especially this past year that I didn't feel good about putting them back on. I tried it once and I almost felt dirty, so I am done. Thanks for the video.

It is a huge leap to take for someone that has been in the church for a long time. My wife is battling the desire to remove them but not feeling right about it, to go back to wanting to remove them. It is a hard thing for many people.

@@uncorrelatedmormonismit’s much like with having a new perspective on the word of wisdom. I now know that tea, coffee, and alcohol are all fine in moderation. Yet I have 0 desire or plan to ever drink any of them. And in fact even feel scared with the idea of doing so, and have even left myself out of activities with friends because I “don’t drink” or “don’t drink tea.” I think traditions are extremely hard to kill, even when you want to, especially when there’s no moral issue with keeping your traditions.

@@uncorrelatedmormonism Yes, it can be very difficult for some. There was a time I would have struggled but with all that I know now makes it a little easier. I am 69 and was active but not active in childhood. My dad wasn't a great man but my mom made up for it and taught us at home. Maybe being up and down through early life makes it a little easier for me than those who were dragged to church every Sunday.

@@zrosix2240 Yes it is tough but for me I have no desire to drink alcohol and very happy that we had that in the wow since my dad was a drinker and made holidays very unhappy for mom and us kids. And I value my health too much to start smoking. As for coffee and tea, I have learned the many health benefits, I do drink tea and we will see about coffee.

Thank you for this in depth video! I’ve often wondered how they were brought about. I wish it was a more popular topic of discussion for church members but when I asked or searched, I was met with similar answers. It’s nice to add new information.

I received my endowment in the Los Angeles Temple in March of 1972. All garments worn in the temple tied with strings an covered legs to the ankle and arms to the wrist. The dresses for rent were knee lenghth. That felt very awkward.
I still own several sets of one piece garments with open crotch. Since we wore panties or pantiehose over them they were modest and practical.

Thanks for the example. Just out of curiosity, I would love to have seen those garments. It is hard for us today to realize how different things were 50 or 100 years ago in the church.

You didn’t go over the history of the symbols in the garments. They are Masonic symbols of the square and the compass, though I understand the Masons don’t have any kind of special undergarment.

Something fascinating has been the question "why didn't Joseph or hyrum have garments on when they died?" I find it hard to believe they would go without their garments - and this makes me question if garments were a thing Joseph knew about.

This is an interesting idea. There certainly is a movement currently to absolve Joseph of everything we don't like about Mormonism.
If this is true though, then we would have to assume several people are lying. It also would be very strange considering the original garments had a huge collar and went to ankle and wrist. Joseph wouldn't have noticed this on several people?
No offense certainly. However, the "Brigham did it" mentality assumes Joseph is completely oblivious.
John C. Bennet, who was proven correct about Joseph's illegal land deeds, wrote that Joseph used garments with marks cut in them. He did this in his 1842 book History of the Saints:
"After they are initiated into the lodge, they have oil poured on them, and then a mark or hole cut in the breast of their shirts"
A July 10th 1844 diary entry from James TS Allred wrote about how Emma came to his mom and had her make the first garments with Eliza R. Snow.
William Clayton wrote Jan 25, 1844 that a Sister Durphy made him robes and garments.
Sept 19th 1844 letter from Ebeneezer Robinson wrote about garments

    • @uncorrelatedmormonism
      @uncorrelatedmormonism  Місяць тому

@@ashleywawro8644 No actually. This idea though is what makes it very difficult to have a conversation with people that think polygamy was just a giant conspiracy.
Essentially if there is any evidence whatsoever suggesting Joseph was involved then it was created/edited by someone who practiced polygamy. Therefore it is not to be believed. As a consequence, you remove whatever evidence you don't like and then viola, Joseph is squeaky clean.
It also is absurdly illogical. Almost all of the inner circle during Joseph's Nauvoo years continued to Utah with Brigham. They were too heavily invested into the church to leave it. These are the ones who knew about the secret ordinances and secret doctrines. Therefore, they were not as affected as the rest of the membership.
William Marks, who is seen as the most trustworthy voice in early Mormonism, even unequivocally said that Joseph and Bennett were the first to enter polygamy. He had no reason to lie.

A very interesting history. It seems that the original garments could be quite revealing of the wearer's body, even to where some brethren might find it hard to keep their minds focused on spiritual things.

There are some accounts of the early endowment being coed with individuals in the nude or wearing garments. They were certainly open piece and open. I believe they had a bunch of ties to close things up, but I doubt it would close very well.
