I have two 17wsm the first is the Savage b mag with the boyds thumb hole stock. I lapped the barrel in and glass bedded it. I have Vortex glass on it with a suppressor and it is a one holer at 100 yrds. The second is a Jard 72 which is an AR frame. I have night vision on it as I do a bit of night calling. The Jard shoots better then I can. I have shot coyotes at 300 yrds and they just drop dead. The Jard is suppressed as well. The only issue is getting ammo for them. I loaded up when I bought them but I will run out of ammo some time. I have 9 coyote/varmint rifles but the 17 WSM gets the most use.

I bought the Bmag back when it first hit the shelves about 9 or 10 years ago and I love it. The .17WSM ammo is not the cheapest and when you put it in a semi-auto, you'll tend to shoot a lot more. I like bolt actions, they seem to encourage you to take your time and make, well placed, accurate shots. The Ruger Precision is a great rifle too, both rimfire and center fire.

I am not going to bash the 17 WSM. If it suits your needs, and it's good for you then have at it. 6 plus years ago, I wanted to do more prairie dog hunting since I retired. I had always hunted them in MT a day or 2 before the guys arrived for deer or afterward if we had time. So I reload and always used a 222 for PDs.. My 1st summer that I went PD hunting after retiring, I came back with a whole lot of ammo to reload from the .222 and had to limit shots due to barrel heat. I don't mind reloading, but when you are talking reloading in the upper 100s, it doesn't get to be fun. So, I wanted an alternative to reloading and more shooting. I looked at the 17 hmr and 17 wsm. Why I chose the 17hmr over the 17 wsm..
    1. Less noise
2 Ammo cost for the 17wsm is considerably more than for the 17hmr. Now 2 to 3 times more per shot!!
    3. 17hmr ammo weighs a LOT LESS and takes up a LOT LESS space in your pockets. Try carrying 300 rounds or more of 17 wsm in the field with you!! I normally don't hunt near my truck, and I am out for hours away from it. I don't fell like going back to the truck for more ammo due to weight or storage issues.
    4. I assume the barrel will heat up faster on 17wsm since it shoots a faster bullet. Also, I have never had a bolt action fail me, but I have had a semi-auto rifle fail me. I don't like fixing stuff in the field or have to go back to the truck to hopefully fix it.
    5. I can get within 200 yds or slightly more for all the prairie dogs to get all the shooting that I want or can do. I know the 17wsm is capable of further range, but I don't have a need for that.
    6. The 17hmr is powerful enough for PDs. I have shot countless doubles and one threesome at 92 yds.
    7. I use a Votex 6.5x20-50 scope. I would think that once you approach the 300 yd range you might need more power for a small target like PDs to have consistent kills which probably means more money for a scope. Oh, you will pay more $$$ for the 17wsm versus the 17hmr also unless you get some kind of super deal.
Those are just a few reasons I chose the 17hmr over the 17wsm. I have the Savage B17 bull barrel and love it with several of the 10 round clips that I carry with me. I have had that barrel very hot as well on occasions. I have created my own blower set up to cool down the barrel. Not only does barrel heat come from the bullet/gases, but in the summer in MT with no shade, you and the barrel are cooking in the sun before any ammo is fired!
Of course, I would not use the 17hmr on coyotes or badger unless they are close enough for a headshot, and besides, if I especially wanted to hunt them, I would take the 222. OK, I have bored you, so have fun with either 17 hmr or 17 wsm or both. Guns are like tools. They all have a specific purpose. Use them wisely!

      @rksando1
Yes, the wind affects the 17 HMR, but wind affects any bullet if the wind is strong enough. I carry a wind drift chart and aim off the target accordingly, which to me is a lot of fun to figure it out. The only time I can't use the HMR in the wind is when no matter what gun that I would have with me, the wind would move the gun on the tripod so much that I can't stay on target with any gun. I have never shot at a prairie dog off of a bench rest. I have only used a Harris bi-pod or Caldwell tri-pod (now Bog). For me, it's more like real hunting.

Put a different scope on it in the meantime and same issue. I thought it might be drilled and tapped off center. I did some research and some measuring. The scope bases were not square. I bought an EGW base and problem solved. It is a tack driver now and holds zero like a vice. Good luck!

If there's one in the chamber, its left with the safety on and turned slightly away from the target. On a bolt action, I will leave the spent cartridge in the chamber and still turn it slightly away. Thanks for watching!

A couple of things. Winchester can't make rimfire ammo that is accurate.
Secondly the 17WSM is dead, ammo is too hard to find. Just go with a 17 Hornet of some flavor. You can atleast reload for it.
If all you were after was to see if it would go bang, then success. I demand more from my bang sticks. Good luck on the project you just bought!

I can't imagine the stopping production completely, I'm sure they do limited runs like many other calibers. The parent case is from an industrial powder actuated tool load that has been in production for many years.

I like Savage! Most of them are made right here in the USA too.

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Honstly, I’ve had issues with every savage I’ve owned. My friend has too. I had one of the first WSM’s that Savage made. The bolt one. It was horrible. Threw fliers constantly. My friend had a couple of Savages too that he had nothing but problems with. Switched to CZ. Too many internal plastic parts in the Savages.

My B-Mag has been great from day one. I did buy a CZ512 (.22 MAG), It wouldn't cycle at all. I sent it back and they fixed it. Excellent customer service.
