If you're doing a distressed sign that you want to look aged I think the inkjet graphic compliments the aged look. You can always go in with prismacolor pencil to enhance the copy a little bit. 👍 Thanks for showing the two types of printer ink processes. Very helpful.
That’s what I said too Lily Mae.. I really like that look better because it looks more natural to me. I thank you for the tutorial on it and I LOVE watching you, it makes my day..❤️
Thank you for the comparison. For the Inkjet = What you can also do is OVER Sharp your image, especially if transferring photos. Then get crazy, you can OVER Saturate any colors. Like it will be "too much," then when printing, do the highest quality = more ink is put down. Print, let it dry for a bit, completely dry, then do the Mod Podge. I always thought it odd that tutorials say it's not possible to transfer if using an inkjet. The OVER saturation and the OVER sharpening help make up for the result you're seeing here, which is flat, out of focus.
The channel, “Red Rocking Bird,” has a tutorial with an inkjet, and it worked great for her. She doesn’t use hair spray, but I have heard that might help. I haven’t tried it myself, yet, but I do want to try it. I have learned so much from both of your channels. You are such a great teacher. Thank you, for showing the difference, so we can explore, with the tools we have. I noticed one thing she did differently, is that she worked in small sections, to wet it, and rub it down, so that may have helped her. Since it wasn’t all wet at once, it didn’t give it time to smudge.
I’ve always did this with my ink jet! I didn’t realize it made a difference with the two different printers until I watched your video!. I guess I like the vintage grungy look of the ink jet but a laser is definitely worth looking into also. Thanks for this video; I would have never known the difference! ❤️
I came up with a cool idea for a product to sell in my Etsy store and a variation of the idea involved transfers of some type. As I was researching on U2'b, this video came up. I despise ink jet printers (mainly for the residual costs) and have always had a laser printer. After watching a number of videos on this method, all using ink jet printers, I thought my idea was going to die on the vine. But then I saw this and I am excited to give it a try. A lot of people suggested the ink jet result was better for the distressed look, but it seems you could easily distress the result from a laser printed transfer with fine sand paper and a light touch. With this method, you can control the distressing to your liking rather than accept the random results with an ink jet transfer.
Thanks so much for this comparison! I never even tried with my ink jet printer because they said it couldn't be done. 🤦🏻♀️ And yet here you are doing it. I'm going to stop listening to people and just try stuff out.
I make a lot of distressed looking crates and soap boxes in my woodshop and get requests for distressed lettering. I really like this technique and will probably use both. Thanks for the great instructions.
@@OurUpcycledLife Been enjoying your videos all day. New subscriber. Found you on one of the decoupage pages on Facebook. Great job - your items you make are gorgeous! And hello from a daughter of a Canadian. She was from Manitoba till moving to the states in the late 40’s. Miss going up there!!
I could HUG you!!! Ty so much for this video! I was soo sad when I learned I had to have a laser printer because I didn't want to invest in one when I have an expensive inkjet. Well, now I don't have to! It works just fine with inkjet and I'm sooo happy!!! Ty so much for all your videos. You improved my business flow. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for demonstrating the difference. I like the ink jet printer better. Gives it a more rustic, worn look. I wanted to do this on rustic painted clay pots. Think it will look great for what I’m going for.
Hi! I am happy to see the results from the 2 printers. I used an ink jet printer and Mod Podge and couldn't get back to the project for 2 days!! It was a disaster to try and rub the paper off. I'm sharing this to help someone else. I don't know if it was printed with a laser jet, if it would have rubbed off ok. Great video!
Thanks for watching! The ink jet came be tricky ... I also find it works better if you don’t let it sit that long . It would have been fine with a laser jet ❤️
I like them both. I have laser printers and honestly I'd never go back to inkjet. Laser is more expensive but you save tons of money in the long run on toner (vs. Ink).
I actually like the ink jet better because it looks naturally aged and worn and doesn't look like a modern super crisp new redo of an old sign. Thank you for these video's by the way, I really LOVE your channel and subscribed! You remind me of a dear sweet friend.
Great tutorial. I like both versions but the ink jet makes it look more rustic to me, like the sign has been around a long time. Thanks for sharing, can't wait to try this.
One thing about the ink jet print is how with it, the sign looks a bit more rustic to me. Like both printings, but, think I like the more rustic, ink jet look the best. TY for sharing and letting us know how to not get the dried print too wet. That was the problem I had when I tried my first "image transfer" sometime ago. I never knew what I had done wrong - now I do, and, will be trying it again.. TY for sharing your methods with us.
What a great video tutorial! I only have an inkjet printer and the question you answered by comparing the inkjet to the laser jet was really valuable and informative. Thanks! The grammar nerd in me has to comment on the pronunciation of the Mod Podge product. It’s NOT modge podge - the first word is MOD. It’s a mistake I hear all the time, though, because it’s so easy to do!😂 I think it may have been named Mod Podge because, years ago, mod meant new and improved. Anyway…please forgive my fanaticism! Your channel is one of my favorites.
Good morning and Happy Easter! I use ink jet, but treat it more like rice or decopage paper. I dont flip the image, but rather use the whole thing. I buy cheap printer paper, its thinner and is easy to work with, plus I dont have to do the extra step of peeling the paper off. If you hair spray your image, it's less likely to run the colors...just a thought. I love your videos and how you teach, thank you.
Yes great tips! You can also make the computer paper even a little bit thinner with this technique then decoupage: ua-cam.com/video/9uLxgmoluYE/v-deo.html
Hi from Lapland 👋🏻😊 i would like to leave a comment regarding ink jet transfers: i do also like the rustic look, but keep in mind that, ink jet prints strongly fade in the sun! After only one summer exposed in the sun, you will hardly see your transfer. Thought this might be an important point. 🤷🏻♀️ However, I ❤️ your channel 😊
Brilliant, so detailed. Thank you very much. I am going to try putting reverse transfers on an old wooden, free-standing, towel rail, and turn it into (hopefully) French Shabby,
This is great! There has been conflicting videos on which printer to use. My brother in law takes lovely photos and I'd like to see the results of them on wood boards. I have a color lazer printer and am eager to try it now!
It is just regular computer paper and I have lots of other videos on my channel doing these techniques you can check out and will guide you along. Thanks for watching
Thanks for this. I like the more weathered look of the ink jet and it is the kind of printer I have so will try it out. Thanks so much. Was searching for just this info and came upon your video.
Very cool! I bet if you used a different kind of material to print on with your inkjet printer that you could get better results. I believe I've seen people print on film and laminate sheets.
Thank you so much for doing this so sorry I'm late but I have been searching for this type of post for a long time some years actually thank you for putting my mind at ease
I have used both, i'm not sure about the mod pod she used but I do know the dishwasher safe mod pod seals the picture in better where you don't wipe away the photo as much.
I wonder if you put the Transfer medium on the wood, rather than on the inkjet picture would it smudge less? You wouldn’t be dragging your brush across the inkjet print merely laying it down on the prepared wood. Just a thought. Love your demos x
I did try that technique and it didn’t make any difference. It’s the actual rubbing I found that took the image away. Worth a try though might work for you ❤️
I recently saw a video where you put a ink jet printed image in a oven at 200° for 10 min. to set the ink will this work for reverse transfer printed with ink jet, will it help the ink transfer better with no or less smudges
Thanks for watching! I haven’t tried that but would certainly worth a try and it will probably help a lot with smudges. Let me know how it works it you try it! ❤️
Been doing this for sometime and curious how you handle what I like to call "paper fog"? After all the paper is off (that will come off without destroying the design)... and after the water has totally dried, the design seems to "fog over" some. Add water and it's instantly bright again. Usually a clear sealant takes care of this for me but wondered if you had any other thoughts on this? Thnx...
Yes you can get a bit of a haze at times just need to work on a small area and dampen finger and rub slowly. When you add the poly alot will go away if you still cant get it off. Use the cheapestest computer paper so you dont have as much paper to rub off also
Love this vid because I have an ink jet printer and I purchased some of your graphics- after seeing this, I went to the library to print out because they have the (I don't know if you would call it a laser jet- but it uses toner) instead of the ink. We shall see if I can get it to work.
Thanks for taking the time to make and upload the video. I was wondering why there are two white blobs below and to the left of the word coffee on the laser jet sign?
Hi can wanted to know when I make a copy of the words on the computer do I reverse it? Or leave it regular. I think it’s the only thing you didn’t mention . It looks on the video like it’s printed reverse
Love your video! I tried this and it seems like I’ve rubbed off the paper 5 different times. I did it on a canvas, and after I rub it off and it’s still wet, it looks good. But then by the time it’s dry, it’s all white again, Like it won’t stop peeling off. Any suggestions?
I'm not a huge fan of ink jet printers for many reasons, including that a printed letter on a laser jet is infinitely cleaner without fuzzies - experience with an ink jet is poor quality or not crisp, clean letters on simple black & white printing. Having had this experience from years ago has really slanted me away from the ink jet. However, I do use an ink jet for photo printing and have good success, but it requires a top quality ink jet in my opinion. I say if you have a choice and are not looking for fuzzy of distressed use a laser printer. I really appreciate your comparison however, I can see that distressed-look crafters may well want an ink jet to accomplish this without having to use an abrasive to tone down their signs.
What type of inkjet printer are you using? It matters as there are dye type inks and pigment type inks. Pigment types are higher end and will probably handle a transfer better. Thanks for the compare ~ Modpodge! Who knew? ps… i like the inkjet example for this use. wondering how modpodge will do with transfers onto metal?
It is a HP printer! I don’t actually use it much. Use my laser jet 90% of the time 🌸 I have used mod Podge on metal actually doing a video right now on a metal bucket
@@OurUpcycledLife Thanks so much! But can I please ask; which model? You see, some use pigment type inks and most seem to be dye type. They each give a different result.
What else could be used to rub off the paper? I have very dry skin and fingers would be too dry doing this process. Would a large pink eraser work well?
I find my fingers work best because you can feel what paper is left but I wouldn’t use a eraser it would be to aggressive. Maybe use a small rag but work really careful with it .
Thanks for watching! ❤️ I don’t think a scraper would work that well. It would also scrape of the graphic. But I sometimes use a rag so it’s easier on fingers if that helps 🌸
Thank you for sharing the video. This is the first side by side comparison that I see on UA-cam. Others only say "inkjet isn't possible. You showed that it's not true. It is possible with the inkjet printer as well. And, in combination with distressed would, it's maybe even more suitable. I don't own an inkjet printer anymore. When my last one died, I switched to laser.
I was wondering, if you wanted to do this technique on a big bit of furniture, would that HAVE to be inkjet? For example 890mm x 610mm or has anyone ever done this in sections? Or would that just be a nightmare? Thanks in advance. Tim
thanks for such good informative video! noticed that you are using the white print paper to print the words.so the background is white. if using colored paper, then background will be colored as well? thanks!

Wonderful video! Can I use this method on canvas?
you don't have to crumple the paper .. just use special transfer paper for sublimation printing and the paper will peel off beautifully.....
If you're doing a distressed sign that you want to look aged I think the inkjet graphic compliments the aged look. You can always go in with prismacolor pencil to enhance the copy a little bit. 👍 Thanks for showing the two types of printer ink processes. Very helpful.

When printing on the ink jet printer did you use the best in the settings? Or maybe when creating image use the bold type?
I just use regular settings
I have an hp desk 4100e printer. Will this work with that and regular printing paper?
I’m unsure about that printer. Would have to test it.
I am definitely going to try that
Thanks for watching ❤️
Do you need tobuse chalk paint? What about other paint types?
Thanks for watching ❤️ I find chalk paint works the best if you are doing reverse transfer
@@OurUpcycledLife Thank you.
How did you print backwards and what paper did you use?
Here is a video that will explain the process and I just used regular computer paper.ua-cam.com/video/0ji2k8ai43I/v-deo.html
Do you have to print back to front? Ie writing in reverse/mirror image?
Thanks for watching ❤️yes you have to reverse the text
I love your channel!! Do you recommend adding a coat of Mod Podge over the final piece? Thanks!
I like to use polycrylic as a top coat. I find Mod Podge looks to thick Thanks for watching
Love this💐 You are a great inspiration! can I use a scraper lightly on the transfer as my fingers are starting to get arthritis 😕. ?
Thanks for watching! ❤️ I don’t think a scraper would work that well. It would also scrape of the graphic. But I sometimes use a rag so it’s easier on fingers if that helps 🌸
Will this work with a color laser jet image as well or just black?
Thanks for watching ❤️ yes it will work
Thanks for your videos. Your tips are quite useful to me. Greetings from Argentina.
Thanks so much for watching❤️
Did you use regular printer paper for this method? Also do u think the photo transfer modge podge medium would work on this?
Yes regular computer paper and yes the photo mod Podge will work but the matte mod Podge works just as well❤️
Thank you for sharing the video.
Yes I was surprised how well it worked !
Can I print a colour photo on normal plain paper using my ink jet to do this instead of a graphic? Thanks!
Yep you sure can! Just be mindful it may rub off quite a bit with a ink jet ❤️ thanks for watching
@@OurUpcycledLife ok great thank you 👍👍
Thanks! The mystery is solved!
Thanks for watching! Glad to help out 🌸
I was wondering, if you wanted to do this technique on a big bit of furniture, would that HAVE to be inkjet? For example 890mm x 610mm or has anyone ever done this in sections? Or would that just be a nightmare? Thanks in advance. Tim

thanks for such good informative video! noticed that you are using the white print paper to print the words.so the background is white. if using colored paper, then background will be colored as well? thanks!
Thanks for watching! You rub all the paper off so I would only use white paper or you will have a bit of a mess if ink from coloured paper runs ❤️
